Maybe in England you don't do Country Classic's Karaoke, subscribe or read Rolling Stone's Magazine.

If someone really, REALLY wants to sing a song that has already been sung, I tell them fine but I have a two hour "minimum separation". They usually forget or choose something else, but on occasion they remember...and I let them. In my opinion, it's not really a big deal if a song sung at 9:30 gets sung again at 11:30. Usually over half the crowd has turned over anyway.

Just like the majority of the posts, I never forbade a repeat of a song. And just like most of the posters, I inform the 2nd singer the tune has been done & if they insist, I let them know we'll be spacing it out. I don't believe the 2nd singer needs permission from the 1st singer. Suck it up and be a Samaritan.

However...

I was in a Karaoke contest many years back. I should mention that all the singers knew each other and the community was pretty clique-ish. Mostly friendly, but diva nature would pop up from time to time.

That said, each of the contestants got 1 warm-up tune before the start. I decided to warm with "Fortunate Son" by CCR. One of the contestants took offense because his signature tune was "Down On The Corner" by CCR. He thought I was disrespecting him and trying to sabotage his chances in the contest. In all honesty, I just liked the song and decided to sing it.

Well, he used his warm-up song to sing "Great Balls of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis. This was the song I was doing in the contest (which he and every other contestant knew). Needless to say, dick move. He even gave me that "Gotcha!" look as he walked off the stage.

I only let it bother me for a couple of minutes until I learned he would be performing before me in the competition. He stuck to his guns and sang his signature. The applause was warm & enthusiastic, but he still had that "Gotcha!" smeared across his smug face.

People who do crappy things to people in polite competition really piss me off. I quietly passed my new song to the KJ and no one knew until the announcement that I was not torpedoed by that douche nozzle. I performed "My Prayer" by the Platters - a complete 180 from my normal tom-foolery.

To push the point that he should have never poked this sleeping bear I set the mic down halfway into the song and finished the tune at (what my friends used to call) back row amplitude.

I placed 2nd (after all, this is real life and there are some astonishing singers out there), yet I had made my point as the guy who didn't get mad, he stepped up his game and kicked arse.

As an excellent karmic post script, they found out that "Mr. CCR" had been doing paid singing gigs at a local bar and was promptly banned from all contests in our area. In full disclosure, it took me a long time to wipe that "Gotcha!" look off my grill.

I am not a kj but I do parties for friends and family, and I simply will not allow it. A dj won't play the same song twice in a night, I don't think a kj should either.

ONCE PER NIGHT! That's my rule. Now... lets be reasonable. IF the song was sung at the beginning of the night, and its almost closing... and pretty much all the people who heard the song the first time are gone, then, sure. This is something that happens when new people come in... especially near closing time.

As I said in another post... I'm not here to be a rules lawyer.

But I have good reasons for my one song a night rule. 1) eliminates the "I can sing that better" BS. We've all seen it... someone bombs a song or doesn't meet the standard of someone else, and they are on you, "Hey, I can do that so much better, let me sing that." the answer to THAT comment is ALWAYS 100% NO! with the unspoken addendum, "Don't be a d**k."

2) Everyone in the bar has already heard that song. Don't subject them to it again! KJs... guys and gals... remember this isn't only about the singers. You've got a whole bar there, don't kill the enjoyment of others with repeats. As was said earlier in another post, Dee Jays don't repeat songs, and with good reason. You shouldn't either.

3) Picture: Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock. 'Nuff said.

Several years ago in my early karaoke days I had a guy sing "Keep your Hands to Yourself". Immediately after he sings it another guy comes up and says " I wrote that song, let me show you how its done ". Well I caved in a let the guy sing which turned into a big mistake. As he was butchering the song, I turned the lyrics off the screen. He looked over at me with this confused look on his face and it was obvious he couldn't sing the song without the words. I just looked at him and said" You wrote it, you should know it". After that, I never saw the guy again.

And for the record, I avoid repeats unless its been several hours and the first singer has left.

Yes there are always exceptions to rules. I have allowed a song to be done twice in a night - mostly in this scenario you just described. But the general rule is once a song has been done, it's done.

Had a great example (and compliment) of this last night. I've had some regulars coming in for well over 2 years now - nice big group. They said they love every aspect of our show over any other shows they've been to, but particularly like the fact (and they STRESSED this) is that we do not allow the same song to be repeated - sometimes over and over like some shows do and hate going to shows like that. I asked them, did you ever mention that to the kj's or managers - they said, no we just don't return to shows we don't like.
