Some of the MP3+G computer karaoke software allows you to put any video you want in the background of the karaoke lyrics.
I use CompuHost, which allows this. I know many of the other options do as well.
A very very small % of karaoke comes with videos/pictures already built into the background of the lyric display.

Definitely VCD format. Hate it!!! Pain in the a$$ to play, longer time to load, then go to multiplex to mute vocals. Hard to access the songs, even harder to watch the cheesy background videos. But if you’re really interested you can buy them here (gonna have to navigate to find what you're looking for) http://sitesearch.acekaraoke.com/search ... Not no harder to load than any other song, have two players running, one is cueing while the other is plaing. No time lost.

Never liked the idea of making the lyrics screen too fancy. The crowd's attention should be on the singer. Yes, they might want to glance at the lyrics to learn them too or to read the scroller to see who's up next, but do you really want to mezmorize the entire crowd with what's going on on the lyrics screen? I stick with MP3+G and put any extra money into anything that makes my system sound better. Having a great sounding system is really the key I've found. It attracts the good singers, and once you have them, the crowd just follows. Besides, videos take up like 5 times more hard drive space than MP3+G files.

I NEVER LIKED THE VIDEO BEING BEHIND THE LYRICS. AT CERTAIN POINTS IN THE SONG THE LETTERS BLEND IN TO THE BACKGROUND VIDEO. There used to be songs that were called LOST ON LASER. I don't know if there are still titles that haven't been made on CDG from those old laser discs but if I needed one of them; I would just rip the audio from the laser disc and create my own CDG file for the song. It might take a little longer but that is what I would prefer to sing from. I love a nice Black Background with WHITE letters than turn a bright RED.

I have the dual Pioneer pd-v10g, one is playing, the other already on cue. This player will not play vcd. I have a separate dvd/vcd player for that. CDG – press track number, then pause. Access to the songs immediate & instant. No time lost. DVD – pretty much the same amount of time as cdg once it loads. VCD – load it, wait to read the track menu, scroll down to select the song, then pause. Go to multiplex to turn off vocals, another button for left channel. Time lost: approx 30-40 seconds, or more depending on the menu layout. Try that when the singer just gave you a vcd and he’s next, singing within the next 10 sec.

I forget about the VCD discs, I rarely had anyone bring those in & I don't have any myself. I was referring to the old laserdiscs. You HAD to have two players in order to make the night go fast. Although I think my Pioneer laserdisc players play VCD too & pretty sure the JVC players I have play them.

When I first started hosting way back 20 years ago the only format available then were laser discs (after tape cassettes + sheet lyrics) . Pioneer laser disc cost $150 a pop, 28 songs, slightly less $$ for other inferior brands. My first karaoke player was the Pioneer CLD-V303T dual tray laser player, same process as the Pioneer pd-v10g cdg player. First tray playing, load another at the bottom tray, press button, cued, ready for next play. Easy access as well, unlike vcd’s. Looking back, those were ancient outdated technology compared to what we have now. We've come a long way.

Just updated my Compuhost version and was delighted to find it will play vcds, etc. with a built in media player. I had a lady asking me for a song and when I started looking for it I found it available on a vcd entitled "Old Style Love Songs vol 8" for the princely sum of $8 so what the heck. I also found a few other very old tracks I just didn't have including "Sad Movie" which I hadn't heard since I was a tiny tyke (all of 4 years old way back in 1961), but instantly recognized the hook of the song when the video played. (Don't ask me to remember anything else that long ago, but I remembered the hook of that song - go figure...) The built in vcd player worked just great loading the track in a matter of seconds and actually I enjoyed a couple of the rather cheesy videos on the disc because there were shots of windmills, the Eiffel tower, etc. with a pretty girl strutting around in front of them... A little something for everybody even if the videos didn't have a damn thing to do with the words of the song. I'd like to file shift the vcds, but really since I'll never have more than a few I don't mind carrying those few discs with me and playing them... When I go to a show that has the old laser discs as a singer I'll start by watching the singer, but if they are having a truly bad performance or the song has a long instrumental and the singer doesn't move or do anything interesting I find the videos are a welcome source of amusement. Of course I still think I'd rather convert the vcd files to another format -- doing the homework on that right now.

It's too bad nobody has bought the rights to the old laser discs, converted them and offered them as downloads. It would save a lot of KJs a lot of time and make those great old videos widely available again...
Could anybody recommend any "must have" video tracks off the old lasers and what discs they are available on? Maybe I could find a few and convert them if I know which ones are most worth my time, money and effort and there might be a few other people here would would benefit as well...

I have all my Pioneer lasers converted to mpg. Some people that have never seen them before like them, others don't like the video, however most agree the music is a-one.

We find lots of "newbies" think the LD files are the newest invention for karaoke and get upset that newer songs do not have the cheesy videos they seem shocked when informed they are Pre-CDG format. Converting the LD's is a labor intensive process, however, I do suggest the undertaking for those that own/can find a complete set of pioneer LD's.

I have started using the HD versions of KaraokeVersion.com tracks with the color backgrounds. So far everything has a good contrast and lyrics are easily readable. On the downside, all of the files display as 4x3 instead of scaling to the monitor size.
No complaints thus far....
