1) I have never understood why people name their kids after themselves or any other living family member. Talk about confusion and living in a shadow.

2) What a clusterfart dealing with names in a song book for the Hank Williams family. I seriously considered deleting every track to save time since I don't think any of them have ever been done at any show I have done.

3) They all sound the same anyway......so why not just list them all as Hank Williams.

ps....just finished a "By Artist" sweep of my 65000 tracks. Down to just under 63000 after deleting duplicates and bad files. Next sweep is "By Title" which should go real quick then I am printing new books.

Chris is that including your CB 12k drive, and Stellar cap? I have ~59,000....all from cd's and I have been working on getting the naming perfect (yeah right) for about six months now. My wife says more like six years! That does not include reminiscing songs, Spanish, or other foreign songs. I have created a "Specialty" book that contains all the not very used songs. My books are "Oldies" 40's to 80's, "Country" all years, "Pop" late 80's to current. Most of my shows are "Oldies" shows, so the "Oldies" books are where the gang goes to find a song. It is amazing how many new songs you can find when you don't have to sort through all the other songs you aren't interested in. You can't imagine how much work I had to go through to group the songs this way.

All my songs are grouped by artist so my temporary naming convention is ARTIST - TITLE - DISC-TRACK. Then I used Deb's File-2-Folder (FREE) program and grouped all the songs by artist name (about 8500 different artist). From there you can sort the artist into the book you want to create. It is NOT anywhere near an exact science, but it helps find new songs a lot.

That song count includes my entire library except for some Children's and Religious themed songs.

I too am looking to break up my song books some. I have a pretty extensive collection of foreign language tracks I will be integrating over time and they may go in their own books by language.

As noted above, Children's and Religious themed will have their own books (or no books at all as I don't do either kind of event)

I would love to break up into Country / Rock / Pop books, but that is an undertaking for much, much later on.

You'd be done by now if you had sent your book to me.

No Hanks? Them's fightin' words around here.

That's probably what put me over the edge to do first names first so Hank Williams, HW Jr. and HW III are pretty straightforward with a lot less commas.

Good luck separating the pop from the country from the rock these days.

A lot of blues too. Yup, separation by genre these days is not only damn near impossible, it's almost pointless for karaoke.

Heck, even DJ dance music types are starting to blend to 3 or 4 basic types regardless of style- mostly BPM dependent.

As for the Hanks: The first made himself famous, the second did the same- with a lot of help from his Dad's name, ditto the third.

Keeping the same name through generations is some peoples' idea of a sort of immortality, I guess....

Only problem not including the suffixes with their names; you will be asked: “hey, is this song by Sr, Jr, or the III? (sorry, can’t resist that one) . How about H W, III’s son? We probably call him the IV if he decides to enter the music field. Too confusing to list in my karaoke books.

This sweep of my books was the first time I have considered going to a First Last listing in my books. It provides the best consistency across the board and I believe people are smart enough to figure it out. I have seen First Last artist books before and I found what I needed in them easily enough.

I used to think that it would be harder for people because they would be accustomed to looking up names like a phone book or authors in a library. I don't know about you, but I have been tossing my new phone books in the recycle bin as soon as they are dropped for over a decade now. Do libraries even exist any longer? :) (I know they do, and I actually go somewhat regularly, but they are ghost towns compared to when I was much younger).

In short, people process information differently than they did 10-20 years ago because the way information is presented has changed so drastically.

By the end of the weekend I may change my mind and go with First Last which will cause me some grief in editing the books but I ultimately think that is the best way to list things.

I am First Last in my books and always have been. Everyone figures it out just fine. With KJFileMgr do a search for "comma" in the artist field and use the comma flip command. The three part names can cause a problem, do a test before bulk renaming.

Mine are listed as
Williams, Hank
Williams Jr, Hank
Williams III, Hank

I don't rely on file names. My tracks are all by song id. My data is stored in an access database. I am thinking of adding a "first last" name column so I can search either way.

I've accommodated this in my program, noting these "proper name" artists with 3 parts. You have to know which ones this applies to, because you can't just say if it has 3 parts, split it 3-1-2 because obviously there is a difference between Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Ricky Van Shelton.

 Side note: Different reason for George Foreman. When asked why he named his 5 sons George Jr, George III, IV, V, VI & daughters Georgetta & Freda George, he said: “If you’re going to get hit as many times as I’ve been hit by Mohammed Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton & Evander Holyfield – you’re not going to remember many names.” So far, none of them are singers; maybe they are but not yet in the mainstream. Watch out!

Williams, Hank III
Williams, Hank MCMLVIII, okay, that for the year 3,000CE.  :P
