Really?

Everyone loves Weird Al at our shows. On the whole his songs are quite upbeat, lyrically they are non-offensive and most are less than five minutes. Swap your Weird Al Singers for my Ed Sheeran ones.

I have never heard anyone do any of his songs justice! my ears bleed each and every time. perhaps one day someone will impress and get one of the right! :puke: :vomit:

Sorry to disappoint you, simpmech but I am not a good singer. Not amazing by any stretch of the imagination. But weird al’s achy breaky is a basic song, degree of difficulty - well, easy catchy tunes as Billy Ray’s. Very funny lyrics.

I notice something here... not to take away what is considered each of your personal "cringe" levels.. but it appears to me that some of you cringe only because a song is long,,, is that how you make you consideration for your answers? I hope not,, because, in my opinion, some of those songs that have been chosen are terrific songs. Now, true, the singers may slaughter them just as easily as a 3 minute song, but I make my choice on how badly the song itself makes me go "uuuugggh" and quiver with loathing.

My bottom of the barrel list of songs that truly despise is short. There really are only 3,, and luckily only one gets done at karaoke,, and again,, not that often. And these three songs are rated on the song itself, not the group singing it,, because in all three songs,,, I like the bands just fine.

My Sharona - The Knack
Pop Muzik - M
and last and certainly the worst is,,
Elvira - Oak Ridge Boys

My personal criteria starts with a song that should have never been made into a karaoke track. I take into consideration vocal range, length of song, instrumental pauses, & the alcohol-says-I-can-sing-it factor. This is why "Stairway To Heaven" is at the top of my list.

Ditto on mrscott’s My Sharona. Cringe moment from the lyrics: “give it up, such a dirty mind, always get it up for the touch of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. m m m my Sharona"... what??? Here comes Chris Hansen from dateline nbc's ‘to catch a predator’. LOL

The length of song makes for a cringer when you either:

1) Don't know the singer and their ability

or

2) Know that they are awfull or inebriated.

If someone is going to slaughter "American Pie", the whole place suffers for 8 minutes. If it's the Ramones, it's only 90 seconds.

There's a older guy at one of my venues who thinks he's a great singer, but really is just a good pub singer, who sings some really obscure old songs. Now I've heard a wide and varied range of music , but even I watch in amazement as he belts 'em out, as I don't know any of them! This makes me "cringe", for him really, as he seems to think we all know them.

And Ghostbusters, did it once, not much in it to sing bar the chorus.

Love Paradise !!!!

My Way always makes me cringe. In fact it makes me want to take up smoking and go take a 5 minute cigarette break. Speaking of smoke breaks, if a song is a real cringer and also long, should one smoke Saratoga 120's? As the ad went, "wait 'till I finish my Saratoga."

I have to turn that one up in my club. The compressor will take care of the singer. This one usually packs the dance floor.

Same here. This is sung often and get's people UP! If you don't have any compression, put it high on your equipment wish list. Its a must have.

A lot of my personal "cringers" have been touched upon -- "Picture", "Don't Stop Believin'", etc. ("Stairway To Heaven" is great for a smoke break, but when I eventually kick the habit, I'm sure it'll claw to the top of this list in no time.) One of my most frequent cringe moments is, in fact, being asked to participate in a duet of a song I either find terrible ("Picture") or far too long for the KJ to be eating up time singing ("Paradise By the Dashboard Light"). I find that I don't want to inflict an over-terrible or over-long song on the audience, but I've also developed a reputation for being game for duets, and I don't wanna sully that. The eternal struggle, I suppose.

Strangely enough, one of my biggest cringers is a song by one of my favorite artists that rarely gets sung: "Oliver's Army" by Elvis Costello. I get worried that the "one less white n*gger" line will be taken out of context and people will get offended. (Kind of the same deal with the use of "f&ggot" in "Money For Nothing".)
