Anyone hear about this. It is supposed to be something that is new and starting to roll. do a google on it and you can find out more about it. I think karaoke warehouse is handleing it.

Sounds like midi files (kar format) to me. I played one man band for many moons and did just that in the early 90's. Me, my guitar a laptop with midi files and a good sound system. The problaem is that kar files just don't sound real, no matter what soundcard you use. Nothing like real or sampled sounds.

They said that the are cdg files tho. for graphics they show the words, and the cord/strum pattern

any respectable guitarist plays without chord pattern, I wouldn't be seen dead with a chord or strum pattern on stage. You practise the song, and your ear should tell you where to go next. But that's hijacking the thread, and we don't want to do that now.

I'd like to get DumbDrums's opinion on playing on stage with a chord or strum pattern?

Had a look before the link became history, also got your PM TYVM.

I kinda have mixed feelings. Being a guitarist myself, it would just be way to cheesy to play that way for me. Will it take off? Interesting question, and very debatable. Personally I think only beginners (guitar players) will use this to impress grandma and the rest of the family. This is one of those gimmicks like a tamagotchi that will show up every now andd then testing the market, and dying a horrible lonely death.

Something like this has been around for a while, I think it's called "Music Minus One" or something like that. You could get it for any instrument, minus drums, guitar, bass etc. Went to a small bar once that had a single guitarist playing Karaoke. He must have had 1/2 dozen milk crates full of sheet music. He'd play whatever you asked for. We asked him if we could accompany ourselves and he let us. 45 minutes later we gave him his guitar back.

I think that it is cool!

I definately would not use it on stage.....but for a learner track to learn the song would be a great idea!

For me, it would work the same way as singing karaoke...I use the tracks to learn the words of a song...so that when it comes time for competitions and stuff...I don't have to worry!

I think it would be just the same as sheet music...except you have the backup singers, band, etc. to play with you.

Music minus one has been doing something like this for some time. Songs with one part missing. I have a catalog that shows trumpet, clarinet, and many other Music-1 selections. Most are classical pieces for band, etc but using backing tracks is nothing new for artists performing solo or w/ limited space/members.

We still have a large number of solo entertainers (and bands) here that perform live and drum machines, midi backing tracks, etc are used when the entire band isn't around. We have one guy here in 3 bands - Denali Cooks (4 members), Half Baked (2 members of Denali Cooks), and Jimmy Sandy (who also performs solo). I've seen all of them play and Jimmy does a decent job with the backing tracks (he sings/plays keyboard) for a show that last a couple hours.

I do agree that most midi files/implementations are marginal sound quality at best unless you get well out of the consumer market and into the professional audio.

Besides, I just don't think I'd stay for a show where the performer was reading tab/chords all night. I mean, if I can memorize the music, steps and placement on a football field for 3-4 different shows in marching band (about 1 1/2 hours worth of music/marching) the artist should be able to memorize the chords for a show that last for a couple hours.

We have all heard peaople who think they can sing (no one from this site mind you ), now we might have to go in a club & hear people who THINK they can play the guitar as well. Bad singing I can live with, it actually makes a night more fun to see people having a good time, but when you have to hear someone shredding on a guitar that may or may not be able to play, that's when I quit going to karaoke! Are companies that get into this going to have to purchase separate amps on stage for the people who bring their guitar? Then you would either need to mic the amp so that everyone could hear it through the system, or have the amp up so loud that everyone could hear it, which would suck. So now the kj has even more to do as far as mixing. I've heard some kj's that can't even balance out vocals over canned music, do you think they are going to be able to mix in live guitar as well? You can't just plug a guitar into a mixer & expect it to sound good, you would need at very minimum some kind of pre-amp guitar system to plug directly into the mixer.

KW was saying this is going to revolutionalize karaoke, not in my club it won't. Karaoke is defined as empty orchestra - meaning no singer.

It would be kinda fun at home maybe.... but Id hate to be trying to tune my guitar to a disk then find I'd have to retune for each song. does that make sense?
altho the demo for knockin on heavens door they have are the same chords I use to play the song....if they have any zepplein you'd be in trouble with Jimmy's tuning.

Nah, it would just be standard D-A-G-D-A-D tuning - at least for Kashmir. Everyone has their back up guitar tuned to that.. although that's far fetched, but there are MANY songs today that are drop D & some even go to drop C.
Yeah I didn't even think about the tuning issue. More wasted time on stage while Mr Smith tunes his guitar.

You think they would add 7ths, 9ths, diminished and suspended chords in there? What about blues/jazz music? Would that be in the style of Hillbilly from Oki-land, C-F-G without the coloring chords?

I f you want to show off your instrument playing skills go to an OPEN MIC or sit in on a JAM SESSION--thats what they are for. Im of the opinion that Karaoke is for SINGERS of any and all skill levels. Dont think a guitar would be very practical. Now a SAXAPHONE thats something WAY DIFFERENT! ThAT works beutiful--in fact I know a KJ here in POrtland that will actually back you singing karaoke with his live sax playing. He used to play in his dad's tex mex big band and now KJ's. Anytime I stop in and see him he backs me on either I FEEL GOOD, Sweet Home Chicago and my latest SAX song--Walkin Blues (a jump blues song). But let me tell you that live sax makes those songs SWING--in the groove and in the pocket, and man does he WAIL with that sax! But as far as guitars, im not so sure it would be practical and i certainely wouldnt want someone backing me who wasnt an EXPERIENCED and SKILLED player. Karaoke singing is one thing, but karaoke PLAYING is quite another I think.
