Not going through the MP3 debate again- it's kind of like explaining a 3D movie to someone with astigmatism. If one doesn't hear the difference, one simply doen't believe there is one.

 If going through a pro quality sound card, there is NO 'audible' difference - I would give you $100 bill if you could tell the difference. Going through a cheap or generic sound card, you have a VERY valid point - for example, on my dj computer, my good sound card went out I had to revert to the built in to limp by on - it sounded like going from a high quality McIntosh audiophile stereo system to a handheld transistor radio - no bass, the high frequencies sounded like they were garbling under water and tinny.

Despite the fact that computers are much more reliable now, Go on any KJ or DJ forum and you will find hundreds of pages of PC or software based problems. I'm sorry, but I'm not going for the "just as dependable as a player" story just yet.

This is bad logic. If you go to a Mercedes forum, it's nothing but problems. Cuisinart forum, nothing but problems. A Water softener forum, it's nothing but problems. People don't go to forums of ANY kind just to talk about how great the product is and that everything is working perfectly. They go when they have problems...it's the nature of the beast.

Well it's about time. We all thank you.

All of that aside, the most fun I have is with what early PC hosts USED to say: "The PC is so fast and easy that it will give me more time to spend working with and developing relationships with new customers." So what happens? Virtually every PC based show that I've been to has a host that is never more than a foot from the PC, and pretty much spends the night looking like Mr. Spock gazing into one of his scanners.

Having more time is a matter of expertise with ANY system. I see disc based hosts spending WAY too much time looking through binders or stacks of discs for that one missing CD, when I could have had the song cued on my PC in seconds.

If someone is staring at their PC/Discs/Wax Cylinders, it isn't the system. It's their own lack of skill.

According to SC, 95% of all PC based hosts are "pirates". This means that as far as they are concerned, the HUGE MAJORITY(almost ALL) of PC based hosts are dishonest thieves. Maybe using PC's CAUSES dishonesty, per SC's thinking.

Once again, that is simply your perception. SC believing that a percentage of PC hosts are pirates has nothing to do with disc hosts. One could easily be a pirate with burnt CD's as well. There is no correlation and thievery has no prejudice.

Once again, the only advantage I see is convenience for the KJ when it comes to PC Karaoke. No discs to carry and an easier process to locate and load a song. As long as you don't give up the ability to play a customer's disc; I have no other issue with a PC KJ. My karaoke set up at home is all encompassing. I have a Laser Disc player, a Pioneer Twin Tray player but when I'm in the mood to sing for a while or if I have some people over for a sing a thon. I turn on my PC and run everything from that. If someone brings a disc with songs that I don't have; it's just a matter of hitting ONE button to play their disc. Same thing if they happen to bring a Laser Disc with them. Now since I don't do any shows, I probably would NOT replace those 2 machines if they ever died on me but I would have a way to play CD+G discs in my PC but not the Lasers.

Lonnie also isn't setting up and tearing down each night. I had a disc player on site in my bar. We were able to leave everything set up so it made sense to have as many options as possible. If I were setting up and tearing down each night, adding more options to the mix makes a huge difference in setup\tear-down time and well as adding more things that can go wrong and more things to check. If I could play discs from my laptop it would be a different story as the setup wouldn't change much. But that would be as far as I go with it..

Can't use me as an excuse, even when I was mobile, I had a player built into my rack. The weight factor added maybe another 10 or so pounds to the rack. Not a back breaker. The connections were always ready, I just needed the audio plugged into the mixer, the video into the switch.
I plan on getting back into the mobile game, and my rig is already planned with my JVC single tray. I do have too many singers that come in with their own discs. Just had 2 singers last night as a matter of fact, but again, they also know that I do - I advertise the fact.

Just to prove I am not anti-disc, I installed and tested my old copy of CAVS PlayCDG KJ Deluxe on my show laptop. I can now accommodate the disc users out there.

I am even going to advertise it just to see what happens.

With any luck I will get swamped with new singers! Or even regulars who have discs at home!

I've been using CompuHost V2 which has the ability to play CD+G's and several other video formats directly from the software's interface.

I have had exactly 1 singer that has taken advantage of that. I noted his CD+G's and have purchased them to add to my collection.

Before that... I would keep a licensed copy of PowerKaraoke's CD+G Player on my system and use that to play discs.

I will always accommodate OEM CD+G's, but it happens so rarely that I wouldn't spend extra to do so.

My competition up here in the mountains is running off CD+G's and the singers who have attended their shows complain to me about limited selection and time wasted locating and queuing songs.

No, ODB KJ's are not a thing of the past, and I don't mind the competition staying with CD+G's.

:( I am a bit disappointed. I posted to my Facebook page 5 minutes ago, and I have had zero comments about how awesome it is that I can play discs now. I thought there would be hundreds, if not thousands of discs users out there scouring the interwebs for shows that could play discs. Maybe there aren't as many out there as I was led to believe......

I call shenanigans!

Bruce......I unbanned you almost immediately after banning you. Feel free to drop by any time. I will even buy you a frosty beverage of your choice.

Guess not. But most mobile KJs are going to go as lean and mean as they can. They would feel differently if they were perm based.
