I checked a couple different ways. I didn't experience any trouble on any of them?

Hmm, anyone else?

Tried with my main computer: Cable connection 2.6 - no problem, very fast.

Email computer: DSL 1.3 - fast also.

LapTop: DSL via wireless connection 1.2 - No problem, still fast.

Mac (Quadra 660AV) Oldie with 14.4 modem... Yep still have one. Special service to use this... Takes awhile to load the page and download. about 2 minutes. Not too bad though.

Tammy-

Actually, I was in a conversation with another member with troubles on MY submissions.... and he also told me that it seemed YOU had the same problems? As a non paying member, I post files that are usually 2.9 Mb, and are usually compressed at around 100 kbps, on average. Apparently, he told me that my submissions took quite a long time to download, and that his player was telling him that they were all over 300+ kbps.... He said yours did the same thing...

I am completely confused because, obviously, if mine were at 322 kbps, the song would be like, 8 mb... and, I am obviously not posting songs THAT big...

Any ideas? My husband and I give up, and I have tried to reproduce his results, with virtual pc, and cannot.

Thanks!

(And tammy, I will check your new sub, but never had an issue with any OTHER ones of yours... anyone else with mine?)

And my daughter uses a mac plus... which is... late 80's.... but, she loves it:)

No problems on my end, I did see the comment made on Gilly's sub but it showed 100k on my player when I listened to it, don't know why someone would see 300k??? :?:

I wouldn't want to be unable to play Tammy or Gilly's song, what a nightmare that would be

Hi Tammy

I dont think its the site, as this for me has been going on for well over a year now, I remember another site I heard you on I had the same trouble, I dont know anymore, I'm just gonna put this down to a strange phenomia. lol
Everybody elses sub, kicks in as soon as I hit Listen, but on yours It takes like up to 30 secs - 60 sec before I canhear anything, Also On Goonermans, But Only every now and again with his,
one other thing, the silly songs you did the other day about the cookies etc, they kicked in straight away, didnt have to wait my 30secs on those ones :)

Hi frriends;
I've had problems with Gilly's and Tammy's. My media player tells me their subs are 300kbs\sec and over and take a while to download with DSL but in fact they are not, as it appears in my temp. files. All the other subs act correctly?????? Maybe somebody knows the answer to this puzzle.
Gotta go to work. I'll check it out later.

I can make a guess here...

If you're using VBR (Variable Bit-Rate Encoding) instead of fixed your player might report wrong play times or bitrate encoding. I'd double check the setting you're encoding at to see if this might be the problem.

Another problem might be an out of date player. Check the winblows update site to verify you have the latest release of Internet Exploder and Media Slayer.

I'd dump your temporary internet files as well. I've seen occasions where they created problems and even though they shouldn't in this case it never hurts to try.

Interesting.

Actually, I don't use variable bit rate encoding.. I use Average, (ABR).. and very occasionally, when my hubby does my music, He uses CBR.

Could this in some way be affecting how some people's players read my music? I have absolutely NO idea, and I am a ditz:) And, about windows media player, I believe Tonmay told me he was using a quicktime player? (as I do as well, being a mac user) Anyways, Tammy, how do you encode your music?

Hi Karaokemeister:
Thanks for your tips. Yes, I use variable bit rate encoding and the latest Windows Media Player for Windows 98 SE. My Internet Explorer is up to date. I also believe I had too much junk in the Temp. files. I'm dumping all of that. Maybe now things will work better. Thank you so much, K.

Try using CBR encoding - this uses a fixed bit rate for encoding. Check the sampling frequency as well. Some products are more flexible on the encoding that some products are on the decoding. :roll I'm only aware of Constant and Variable bit rate encoding so 'average' is likely variable unless your software says otherwise (VBR is the better option for smaller files with better quality, but it's not always implemented correctly).

A wrong display on the media player bar is a key sign that the player doesn't like something about the way the file is encoded. I used to get this with some players with the VBR files I get from eMusic. Once I upgraded the players I use the problems disappeared.

By default Windows Internet Explorer opens the files in a new Internet Explorer window that plays the music. Older versions of Internet Explorer and Media Player 'might' have problems. I don't use RealPlayer when I listen to the subs so I can't comment in regards to using it.

I do know that non-MS browsers (Opera/Mozilla based browsers) don't work too well with the subs (it's a MIME problem I haven't had time to work on yet).

I don't think it's a Mac problem other than perhaps more 'options' than on the MS side of the house... (I'm not a big 'fan' of Microsloth if you haven't noticed.. MCSE/MCT or no)

I don't know very much ABOUT encoding anything, other than what my husband helped me with, and I tried on my own.... however..

"ABR- The number of bits is determined bysome metric (like perceptual entropy, or just the number of bitsneeded for a certain set of encoding tables), and it is not based on computing the actual encoding/quantization error. ABR is still in beta, but it should always give results equal or better than CBR"

Beats ME though:)

And, no, I doubt it would ever be a "mac problem".... and I agree with "microsloth"... but then, I haven't many microsoft programs.. And you wouldn't catch me using internet explorer, windows media player, etc. Ever:) heck, I rarely use Virtual PC, because it scares me to have my pretty mac LOOK like a pc;) (and, as a browser, I use Safari, and Camino)

Blab blab blah.

At least i NOW know this is a restricted incident, and not many people have problems with my submissions:) Yee haw:)

It's the encoding mechanism. I'd be willing to bet on it. Especially since it's still in 'beta'.

I'm a Microsoft Certified Engineer and used to teach technical classes as a Microsoft Certified Trainer and I don't like them. I still work on the systems on a daily basis (as a Network and Systems Engineer) and don't like 'em. BTW, I wasn't a big fan of Mac OS (it was getting pretty bloated) until they got smart w/ Mac OS X and went w/ a BSD based operating system that trimmed some of the fat.

I don't think the counter/timer reading wrong is a 'problem' - it's an inconvenience. If they don't play at all then the person listening should upgade Windblows Media Slayer and Internet Exploder.
