I'm going to try an keep the lid on my rage as I explain this one. Saturday night, usual gig, as I walk in to set up I notice a young girl in who has a voice like an angel, (no exageration). Brilliant !!!!! We're gonna have a treat tonight. Well the weather was bad, and the evening was slow to say the least. Where was the young girl to help out? Sat over by the pool table with the boyfriend and his mates. 11.30, she finally came over. HURRAH ! I got.....(something like) My voice isn't too good er I might be able to do, have you got er , Adele, I forget which one. No I blooming didn't. Off she toddled. Back 5 mins later. Leona Lewis..Run. Got it!!!! Great stuff!!! Straight on, yup that quiet!. Well she started to sing and was barely audible. People had gathered to watch and listen. Yeah THAT good! No problem I'll just turn the volume doen on the music bump up the mic volume and...."DON'T TURN THE MUSIC DOWN!!!!!" Her voice seemed to be back!!! WTF !!!!!! Flicked the lot back to full and ambled over to the bar. Nutz to her. "That's you told!" was a comment I got at the bar. I've vowed she'll not sing whilst I'm doing this again unless she says she's gonna sing at full volume. What an idiot! I think she'd sat there all night with people mithering (pestering) her to sing. AAAAAARRRRGGGGG !!!

You can't let stuff like that get to you, the world is full of all kinds. Sounds to me, though she has a great voice, she may have a bit of stage-fright. People like that, sing soft, so the music covers their voice up, and if you up the volume, they'll simply sing softer, or pull the mic farther away from their mouth. Announce when she finishes, that you wish she would sing louder, and hold the mic closer to her lips.....like she probably does with co..oh she knows what I mean..... probably not shy with that....

If you use monitors, possibly had the vocals too high in the monitors so she was trying to compensate for what she was hearing.

I'm not above going up to someone who I know can sing, and cutting the music to filler...especially if its not busy, and giving her some encouragement, and maybe a bit of mic instruction, and then restarting the song.

She need NO instruction. She was just being a deva. She will not sing again unless she confirms to me her voice is ok and she is going to give us a proper treat.

Back the vocals off in the monitor and bump them in the mains. This will force her to move in to the mic or sing louder.

SHE is not there to do your bidding. She's a customer; not your singing monkey. If she doesn't feel like singing, then she shouldn't have to sing. Oh yeah. One other thing. If you are going to call someone a DIVA, you should, at the very least, learn how to spell it.

It doesn't sound like you were rude to her in any way, thinking something and saying it are two different things.

Lordy, cheers for that. In response. I thought I made it clear she had come up and asked to sing, then didn't. As for my spelling. I've never had to deal with someone like this before and chose the term because I thought it fitted her not because I knew how to spell it. When you can spell colour correctly you can then have a pop.

Not allowing her to sing again unless she lives up to your expectations makes YOU the diva. Get over it.

I know the divas can get frustrating, BUT IMHO Bruce has a good point -she may be a diva, but she is a CUSTOMER.
I've been reading a book lately on customer service - these facts presented in the book amazed me and have definitely changed how I look at "divas"...
1) Why Companies Lose Customers
Customer dies 1% Customer moves away 3% Customer influenced by friends 5% Customer lured away by competition 9% Customer dissatisfied with product 14%
Customer turned away by an attitude of indifference by the service provider 68%
The average company loses half it's customers every 5 years! And doesn't know why!
It costs 5-6 times more to lure a new customer than to keep one you already have.
Companies can boost profits by 25-125% merely by retaining 5% more existing customers!
Happy Customers tell 4-5 others how good the service was Unhappy customers tell 9-12 others how bad the service was
2/3rds of all customers don't feel valued by those serving them
Now, if that's not enough - she's not just a customer, she's a YOUNG WOMAN CUSTOMER.
Who do you want at your shows if not young women? Singers or no, divas or no - even if she just sits in the corner and sips water - her mere presence makes other women more comfortable to be in the bar because they aren't the only ones there AND she gives the guys someone to look at and maybe even hit on which means they stay and drink longer. Every woman in the bar is probably worth at least one guy who will hang around as long as she stays.
Now, what do you want your diva to tell her girlfriends about your show when she leaves the bar? Do you want more women to come out or fewer?

Here's a quote from your original post: "Well the weather was bad, and the evening was slow to say the least. Where was the young girl to help out?"
Maybe the weather had nothing to do with it being a slow night? Maybe it had more to do with the way you treat your CUSTOMERS when they are there. You seem to think that they are there to be at your beck and call. They are there to have a good time in whatever manner they want to. You are there to cater to the customers. They are not there to serve you.

RIGHT!
Firstly, you don't know how I operate my shows. I get asked back all the time and sometimes in preference to others who do shows at the same venue. At the venue in question, I was called on Saturday morning to enquire when I could come in again as the customers were enquiring when I was on again. Despite the owners wanting to revert to our orginal agreement of once a month at the end of the month. So I treat MY customers with the uttmost respect.
Second. The girl in question has a very powerful voice and knew the song requested as she sings it in various other venues and brings the house down.
Third. As for her voice being a little weak that evening. She SCREAMED at me, weak voice my fanny (see I've used an Americanism there for you), as I was attempting to weaken the music volume and push up the volume on the mike, so save her precious voice and make her heard to treat everyone. She really is good. I thought I was being helpful. Her shout at me, to not turn the volume down, was audible over 200 watts of power at full chat, and could be heard at least 3 meters away. She also smokes her head off, so no concern for her poorly 'ittle voice there then.
I resent any implication that I treat my customers, in any of the venues I play at, badly. They are all treated in an exemplary manner by myself, and I have NEVER EVER had anything but compiments over what I do.

Further notes:-
As said, she knew the song in question, and usually sings it without bothering to look at the screens for the words. And she has a really powerful voice, I've heard it many many times. I was enraged that my attempts to make her heard to the best I could, which is one of the things we are supposed to do is it not?, was being put down. As for her being treated like a piece of meat to lure in men inot the bar, seriously???? You still treat your women like that over there?????
She is my customer, as you say, and all I was trying to do was my best for her. I had even made sure I had the second song she asked for, as she had asked for it previously and I didn't have it. So was chuffed that I was being of service to her my having it in my system the next time she asked for it. I was then trying my damnedest to make her sound as good as she deserved to be.
okay?

One more:- We have a 50/50 splt of male and females in the bar. And if anyone had "hit" on the young lady in question the boyfriend would have been there to have a quiet word.

Once again, the singers/customers are not there to "treat" you or anyone else, regardless of how good they are at singing. They are not being paid to sing, therefore they have no obligation whatsoever. How can you not see this? Maybe this woman just doesn't like you.
