And I stumbled across this on their FAQ...

http://www.riaa.com/faq.php

Quote:
Q: How is downloading music different from copying a personal CD?

Music companies have never objected to someone making a copy of a CD for their own personal use.
We want fans to enjoy the music they bought legally. But both copying CDs to give to friends and downloading music illegally rob the people who created that music of compensation for their work. When music labels are deprived of critical revenue, they are forced to lay off employees, drop artists from their rosters, and sign fewer bands. That’s bad news for the industry, but ultimately bad news for fans as well. We all benefit from a vibrant music industry committed to nurturing the next generation of talent.

Now I guess what came to my mind is yes this passage is talking about non-commercial use of regular cds, but I don't understand the legal objections of SOME of the karaoke manufacturers to format shifting if it actually is done on a 1:1 basis... Isn't that much the same thing that the RIAA is talking about here?

I can only speak for SC, but SC's position has been, for quite some time now, that if you demonstrate through an audit of your system that you are in 1:1 correspondence, you will be given permission to operate commercially from media-shifted copies.

Operators who wait to prove 1:1 correspondence until they get sued are still given the opportunity to do so and obtain a dismissal.

In other words, it's the only way they've figured out how to catch KJs with illegal files. I have yet to see any non-KJs have legal action filed against them. The bulk of piracy is home users but nobody interested in going after hard drive sellers or torrent sites. The revenue stream is squeezing the KJs and venues. Yet several karaoke producers are continuing to release new music, not pursuing a lawsuit strategy and doing just fine. Go figure.

This is of course after you pay the $150.00 required for the audit.
Just thought I'd throw that in as Jim forgot to or didn't want.

The $150 is for a Voluntary Audit. It's $500 if you wait to get sued first.

So, if I have 2 SC disks, that calculates out @ $75.00 per disk..

I'll pass..

But if you have 1329 SC discs it comes out to .11 Cents a disc......well worth it.

If you have 2 SC discs, it will not cost $150 to do your audit.

I was actually thinking more about a certain other company (that is now doing business under a different name for various and sundry legal reasons which i will not touch upon here) who expressed strong reservations about KJ's being allowed to format shift a custom disc purchased from them. (My wife likes to take a disc to other people's shows to sing when we aren't playing a show somewhere)

OK, I have under 40- call it 35. If I were PC based, what would my audit cost? If $150, it would come out to $4.29 each- still to high.

This question has come up before without a definite answer. I am supplying a specific number of discs- 35. What would SC charge a PC based host for that audit?
