Hello all,

I'm postig to find out whether any of you are using powered speakers. If so, have you had any experience using them remotely?

I should explain; I just purchaced two Audio-Technica remote units (X-mitter & RX-ver only) to try a theory I have long been wanting to prove. I use a Behringer 14 channel mixer and B-300 powered speakers. There have been times when I wanted to have a wider spread for my speakers (especially if I decide to operate four of them). My delama was that I did not want to lay out long, and sometimes unsightly, cable runs to reach the speakers.

The only experience I've had with wireless so far is opertiion of my Sure UHF mics. Although these are great products, I didn't want to invest high dollar ammounts to find that I was wrong. So, researching the lower end products, I found the ATW-0327 VHF wireles system for an un heard-of clearance price of $63 each. I bought two. (They have since been further reduced to $49 with only one left in stock)

Now the application. My idea was that if I come from the mains of my board with a high impedence cable directly to the transmitters, and connect the receivers at the speakers I should have the same results as that of the remote operation for guitar application. (As a side note, I chose to use High Z cable, as opposed to the low, because that's what's used for the guitar application. I also felt that it was technically safe. And for only $14 each, it was a negligable investment.) After making the connections, and with the speaker power off, I set a channel output and the Mains mains at 0 db. This allowed me to set the transmitter pots for a level that exeeded more than I would ever require. I knew the pots were set appropriately when I had no more clipping at each transmitter.

And finally the Test. After backing off the Mains and the channel, I powered up my speakers and set them as I would for cable application. Back at the board I rased the levels as I normally would and "Voila" All worked as I hoped for. After that I attempted to block the signal and it continued to operate flawlessly.

With a range of 150 to 200 feet, this adds to the versatility of my sytem. Though I don't think I'll have to extend out much more than 100ft, I like knowning that I have options.

Though I know that I'm no inovater of this application, I have'nt seen anyone with powered speakers doing this. So, agian, I am just curious whether anyone else out there has had similar experiences. If so what have you learned (good or bad) from them.

We have investigated, played tried and tested numorous modes, with the help of our friendly local Guitar Center and the baseline is, you get what you pay for! I.e. a $49 TX/RX will work until someone comes across with a cellphone, heart monitor or a little kid flying his remote plain in the area! Going the Shure way is the sure way. OK, it's more expensive, but the interference level is close to 0, if not 0.

One more thing, if you do want to use it, ALWAYS keep cables at hand, and ALWAYS go for UHF TX/RX on which you can change the frequencies!

What about the time you may accidently forget to change the battery? Signal starts degrading & dies in the midst of the show? Not saying it would happen, but there are too many variables that can cause interference, drop outs, static. May not be happening now, but guarantee it will, sometimes unbearably.

I'll stay with my wired connections. If you run them right, they aren't unsightly as they are generally out of site.
