What is your opinion on a song being sung more than once per night. We try not to allow it unless the original singer has left and it has been at least two hours since it was sung.

Ok giving you a disclaimer here. You are the KJ and it is up to you to set the rules together with the venue you are working at. It is your show and you do what you see fit the best.
How ever, I am of the opinion that as a KJ you should try and set as little rules as possible in this regard. If someone wants to sing something let them even if a song has been sung already. Maybe this person only has 1 song they know how to sing and someone already sang it!? who knows.
Maybe this person gives a different rendition of the song. It all comes down to common curtesy though. It can quickly become a infected subject between 2 singers singing the same song the same night and I have actually seen alot of fights when it comes to these things. I would recommend you to tell people..maybe when you start the show, or maybe print some common Karaoke curtesy rules in your song book. That if someone already has sung a song and you want to sing that song. Go and ask the person if it is ok..most of the time it is OK IF you just show some common curtesy and ASK. Personally I think it is poor taste to sing a song someone else has already sung, but if someone insists, then that person should be able to at a karaoke venue, since they are there spending money and want to have fun. But it is up to you to do what you see fit the best at your venue. Maybe you have a rowdy redneck bar where there would be a risk of fist fights? who knows.
Just my 2 cents

I don't really care who sings what. I just make sure that the songs are not sung one after the other. Who am I to decide what people may or may not sing. It might be the only song they know?

I try to discourage it & will let someone know that someone has just sung it or someone already has it up & they can sing it later in the evening but need to pick another song at this time. Never had a complaint.
I will not allow a song to be sung more than 2 times in an evening. The audience starts complaining at that point.

Please tell that to our local radio station here that plays Redneck Woman 24/7! It was a cute song, now if I hear it I want to

If a song has recently been sung, I will encourage them to pick another and most everyone does without a problem. If they are pulling one of those "I can do it so much better than..." - forget it. Otherwise, no hard rules on the number of times.

I want to thank all for your replies. I know there are people that only will do one or two songs and I try to make sure if the song has been done that also can sing the song but space it out. But I don't think the people at the bar want to hear American Pie 5 times in one night.

IT DEPENDS.
I've had people who come up to me while someone is butchering a song and request to sing the same song. Those I won't play because I don't want to offend the person who is butchering the song.
Otherwise, I have no problem letting the same song play more than once in a night but I try to keep at least one rotation in between airings, not only for the benefit of the first singer but for the audience as well.
More often than not is someone has a song turned in and a singer sings it while they are waiting they will swap it out with another.

Me and my daughter just did a elementary school lunch hour. Sk8ter Boi was sung twice in a row and a 3rd time alittle later. Same with Old Mcdonald and Twinkle Twinkle. No one complained at all, except the kids that wanted to sing rap tunes. The principal would have given me hell if I had let Little Johnny sing Gin and Juice.............

For kids shows you make exceptions because they don't upset that Joey just sang the same song.
Adults on the other hand are far more competitive and get offended sometimes (sometimes more). I've already let my feeling be known in the 'Someone's singing my song' thread. But to point out how I handle this - depending on the show length/number of people there I tend to space them out at least 2 hours or so apart. That puts a song at 4 times a night if it's done at the very start of the show and ever 2 hours and at the very end (show is a little over 6 hours). I haven't had anyone complain about my making them wait and they often turn in another song right away. For those that say 'that's the only song I ever sing' I make recommendations that are similar and see if they go for one of those.
The one time someone starting pushing a little bit (figuratively - not physically) I just asked them if they wanted to hear that song 20 times in a row. They said "No". I said "I don't want to either - pick another song or just wait for it to come up again in a couple hours".

There is a slight difference between an elementary school show & a nightly club show......sorry

I (like many kjs here), have TONS of songs. You can only get between 60 and 75 songs in a night if you're REALLY good at not having a lot of dead space between singers.
I will NOT let someone sing a song that has already been done that night. And Allstar, your radio station analogy is exactly WHY. It's rough on the audience, and it starts up a tempo of "oh yeah, well I can do it better than YOU!"
If you're trying to say with my 14,000 songs you can't find something that's already been sang before, I'm sorry, that person is going to have to miss out. That's ONE person, when I have a bar FULL of people who've already heard that song once.
Sorry, but a 65 song - > 14,000.... that's just rediculous if you can't find something else. Otherwise, get the song request in earlier! I DO understand about a song that's very popular (such as "Redneck Woman", "Picture", and all kinds of others)... but I won't make the whole crowd pay the price. Karaoke is a difficult thing to sell to some bars. The last thing they need to hear is a song butchered TWICE! Even when it's been sung "most excellently" once, there's NO need to redo it, other than some singer's vanity.
That I won't do.

As an audience member and singer...please just say 'NO' to repeats!!! Though there may be situations where this is tolerated, and maybe even encouraged, by the audiance and other singers, I think they must be very rare and unusual.
KJs that play repeats every night (and we all know which songs get repeated!) are a HUGE turn off most places I have been.

Unfortunatly OP, I have to disagree slightly.
A couple weeks ago my parents joined us for a karaoke night and my mom had a song she wanted to sing. It had been sung earlier in the evening (before they got there-but you and I had been there) the person that had already sung that song had left and it had been 2 hours since it had been sung.
I told her to go ahead and sing it.
She did and got a great response.
However, there was that one tine when "Redneck woman" was sang 3 times in one night by the same person!
So I really think it depends on the situation.
Just my Opinion!
