unorganized or uncared for books. No books.

Not always a sign of a pirate. My buddy is TERRIBLE with his books. He had 10, and is now down to 1, plus the two small books I made for him of his newer stuff. He's an OMD host (not for any reason other than he isn't much of a computer geek. I told him, whenever he's ready I will help him get set up. )He just can't be bothered with the books. Personally, I would rather work without books, just because it's a nuisance. I don't have any, yet, because I am still working on the damn thing!! I am doing it manually in Excel. But you can't condemn a person as being a pirate just because of his books.

Well let me restate it, anyone with unorganized or uncared for books or no books is either a pirate AND/OR someone who does not take pride in their business (pardons to those who run strictly from a kiosk and no books, you don't fall in those categories). I guarantee you the percentage of hosts who manage their books in this manner and ARE pirates, is much higher than the perc of those who show pride in their books. So that makes it an eye opener and a consideration for a further look at that host. The excuse "can't be bothered" is pathetic in my opinion, take a little pride in what you do!

You are right Ripman the books their condition and content are very important. Many hosts have gotten away from books, being able to play discs, a lot of the things of the karaoke past, many of my patrons long for. Many modern PC hosts think things like these went out with high button shoes. Many singers come to my show just because it is run in a way they grew up with. It makes them feel comfortable? Have a nice day.

Lonnie, I have to disagree with you here. Over the years, I have filled in for many KJs in my area. And, I am not the only one who has done this. WHen one of us fills in, it is usually because the KJ in question has double-booked himself, or is sick. In either case, when any of us have filled in, we have used our own equipment and libraries to run the show. Now some of our libraries may overlap, and some may be different, but none of us has ever been expected to (as you may be implying) rely soley on that KJ's library, and not use our own. And, to be expected to go out and purchase all of the discs that the other KJ may have in his library would be asking quite a bit (IMO).
And I said if he was using his equipment & library as he stated later, then that is different, however IF the friends library was there as well, since it was his friends show, the friends library is what should have been used primarily - now if both libraries are there at every show, that is a different story. My point was you don't take your own library to fill in.
I understand being hired to fill in a doublebook, been there, done that and in this case, you either hire the sub for the extra booking using their equipment/library or you put them in the regular gig.

…And as I said, she was fine with the version, just wasn't used to it, because it was a bit slower…
…FYI, she didn't ask for a certain version. I try to give the best version I have on hand.
I have a question for you... Now, this has nothing to do with whether one version was/is better than the other... This woman you mentioned may have been ok with (as you said) singing a different version of the song she chose, and she kept singing it to the end, but can you say, with certainty, that she was comfortable with it, or that she just adapted to it because it was her turn to sing, and that was what you queued up? If she was truely comfortable with it, do you know if she now asks for that particular version of the song when she wants to sing it again?
I have accidently put in different versions of songs and people WILL tell me either during or afterward that the version they didn't like and they liked the other version.

And, are you saying that it's ONLY Divas who bring their own discs to a show? Your comment sounds somewhat insulting to me. I bring my own discs (and now a flash drive) with me to shows, NOT to announce that "I am here!", but to use when I know that the KJ does not have certain selections which I would like to sing from. I have also been to shows (in my area), where more than half of the Karaoke Singers there have brought their own discs with them. Some of them are great singres, some are average, and some are awful. BUT, NONE OF THEM appeared to be Divas.
Why does someone have to be a diva to bring in their own discs. How about just enjoying karaoke to the point of buying their own library and bringing it in to sing with? I encourage people to buy their own discs and practice at home and then bring them in to sing from.

While I have seen many people over the years bring their own discs in and I used to do it myself, it is a trend that is rapidly dying.
That could very well be due to the fact that more KJs have converted from using discs to running their shows from a computer, and then telling everyone that they can't/won't play personal discs. People stop bringing their discs with them when they know that the KJ is not going to use them.

This is the primary excuse I get from those who bring in theirs. Other kj's can't/won't play my discs anymore.

My books aren't in the greatest shape, but they are updated & I do pull any that are in need of repair & get new binders or replace pages when needed.
Funny thing is when people come and ask me for the songs that aren't listed in the books - there are none, they are listed. They give me a weird look like REALLY?

Lon that happens to me too, and I say something "you are looking for a song in the 'By Artist' book" or "the books are arranger by 1st name and not by last name". Their reply would be "oh, I didn't see that"

I went to double column books a few years back - and everyone missed the 2nd column for quite the time. Hey this song isn't in your book, it goes from I to L missing J!
I'd reply and show them the 2nd column, they'd say OH! with a dumbfounded look.

I get on him about it all the time. It's kind of embarrassing to me to have to put out his nasty old books. But he is definitely no pirate. He wouldn't even know HOW to pirate music. LOL.

I plan on running with one, maybe two books. I find it to be a waste of money and resources to have 10 books, and have people spilling beer all over them, and them getting ruined.

One show I go to runs it with one book. She has been there for years, and her people are happy. She never has to do anything but add her new songs as she gets them. The book stays by her booth, and stays clean and nice. A friend of mine, in NY, only used one book, at his station. He had cases and cases of discs that were all visible. Eventually, that book went away, and became a file on his computer. You would just tell him what you wanted to sing. Still had cases and cases of discs. Down the road I may want to look into the kiosk thing, or use e-readers. I don't mind adding songs to a file, but the maintenance on books is an expense in time and money that I just don't want. Call it what you like, but that is just the way it is. I have been working on my book for months, because I chip away at it little by little. I have never been one who liked tedious tasks. Typing the book from scratch is a DAMN tedious task. I just don't see myself spending hundreds of dollars or having books printed up, just so a bunch of drunks can spill their beer all over them.

You seem to assume just because you bring in your own songs that I would think that you are.

That's because there are several KJ on this Forum who have taken the stance that if you bring your own discs to a show, you are a Diva. I'm sorry that I jumped on you over it, because you hit a (somewhat) raw nerve. I'm glad you cleared it up. Thank you.

That's ok cueball sometimes I know other hosts misunderstand where I'm coming from. I ask a lot of questions and that makes some people uncomfortable. I hope I didn't offend. Have a blessed day.

1) While I am a huge DK fan, exactly WHO decided that their version was better for the singer? You, the host??? Sorry, that's not our place or our job. The "best" version is the one that the singer likes-period. See below.

2) Exactly. Not a matter of being a Diva, but rather of having a preference in version and not being sure the host has it.

I get a LOT of new singers from shows where:

A) The host can't or won't play their disc.

B)...And this is a biggie- Shows where the versions are not listed in the book. Even worse than not playing their discs, because they would still take a shot on the host's version if they knew what it was.

Want to really PO a singer who requests a certain version? Surprise them by subbing another without telling them first....

Hewy, Yo, could we get passed this already?? She didn't ask for a certain version. She walked up to me and said "Can I sing House of the Rising Sun." Period. Geeze!! The only reason that she normally sings the Legends version is because that is the only "working" version my buddy has. The DK version threw her off a bit because it's slower. That was all. She wasn't mad. She isn't going to quit her job, or stop singing because of it. Holy CRAP!! I NEVER thought this would be such a big deal on the site, when it wasn't that big of a deal at the show. You people need to chill out!!

Smooth, Ease up. Yup, you DID say that she preferred the Legends version- But either way my post wasn't aimed at you. Take a deep breath. I was just making general observation- singers don't like surprises.

Exactly - singers don't like surprises whether they ask or not for a specific version. 9 out of 10 times they want a version they are used to! Sometimes they'll ask, most times not.

Right, Lon. If I have more than one version listed, and I'm dealing with a new singer, I always ask if the version that they wrote on the slip was specifically chosen. If it was, good to go. If not, I will sometimes suggest another, if other singers have made it a more popular version- with the standard explaination, then go with their wishes.

8) According to James 2013 will be a year of SC taking the bull by the horns, and fighting piracy on five fronts. Whether that is bull is just something we will have to see. I think instead of taking the offense, SC will be playing a great deal of defense. They are suing their former contractor APS and the sub-contractors, that firm hired. I'm sure they in turn will be counter sued by these former employees, not to mention certain injured defendants in the California, suits that have just been settled. 32 out of court and 40 simply dismissed, not a very good track record, since the cash settlements were sort of cookie cutter in nature, resulting in $5,000.00 a piece. This result took ten months to resolve. It would appear that this legal approach is not cost effective, and SC has to sue it's former employees to try and recover money they say is owed them. I guess that will have to wait until a trial, I just wonder what SC is using for money in the mean time? Have a nice day.
