Does anyone know what is the legal status of playing music videos from Youtube in public? Let's assume that the venue pays ASCAP and BMI fees. Are there any extra licenses needed?

I don't think anyone here has the knowledge or training to give a completely accurate answer. Read the terms of service and then consult an attorney.

ascap specifically charges more for playing video's
if the venue's ascap fee's cover the video portion then your allowed to play video's

as for youtube use in a commercial enviorment you'll have to call ascap and ask them.

Call YouTube, not ASCAP. The YouTube folks will be able to tell you how you can use YouTube.

You also have to consider that just because it is on YouTube, doesn't mean it is allowed to be there or that the copyright holder allows you to use it in the same way outlined by the YouTube terms of service.

Well as far as our anti-piracy SoundChoice discussions go.......SC has made it quite clear that using thier material via YouTube is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.....I had this problem going on where I KJ at awhile back and that guy didnt last at out place for long.

I also addressed this very issue in the two magazine articles I wrote on the Oregon SC lawsuits in NWKG mag.

I doubt you can legally do it by any means. So if you insist, do it until you receive a cease & desist order, which I don't see happening in the near future.... :)

I am investigating if it is sensible to add YouTube to professional version of our software. We are adding it to non-commercial player, as you may do it at home, but it looks like it is of no use for KJs.

That's really the question. YT quality is usually pretty crappy.

Nothing i'd be interested in as a pro kj anyway, not going to rely on any internet stream for songs. Too many inconsistencies with internet to run a nightly show. The one in our club now is so sporadic, some nights & can't even gain access to check a web page.
