I know Sound Choice only comes on disks. Are there really people still lugging thousands of disks to each gig? I thought most people moved to hard drives 10+ years ago. Every once in a while you see an 80 year old DJ/KJ still working that way. This thread is about the pro and cons of all the different Karaoke software. I am all for staying on topic.

Some do, but the legit computer users are not stealing their music or buying loaded hard drives full of illegal music. They have all the discs still to back up whats on their system or only purchase music from authorized mp3g sources.

I have only tried the demo that is on their site. I assume that the demo version works like a the full version. It really is a great app. It is just slow when entering a search.

This topic just became the concern of every legit member of the board when you said that you had 250,000 zipped files that you never ripped the tracks for. I bet you are "for staying on topic" because the heat is coming.

What heat? I bought my collection from a guy that had CD’s for everything he ripped. He is one of those guys that carried the CD’s to every gig and they are now in bad shape. I think near the end he used something to rip them all.

The collection is somewhat of a mess. He lacked the ability to organize. I am in the process of using CD+G Autoname to rename everything. It uses the KJ Pro database for names.

I have zero interest in ever being a KJ. We go to a lot of parties and have to host them also. We are going to host Karaoke in the garage the second week of all the months in the winter. Check out this TV I installed a few months ago.

My vision of the future of all this is to have the following.

- 802.11n or better microphones that you pair with the software on your laptop with less than 50ms lag. Somehow it would have to support diversity based microphones. WiFi 802.11n inherently supports this.
- 802.11n powered speakers to send the mixed audio feed with less than 50ms lag. After they are paired you just need to plug them in he wall.
- All the mixing and FX’s (reverb or echo) would be done in the Karaoke software.
- The laptop would use Intel WiDi to send the video (1080p) lyrics to one or many monitors over a wireless connection with less than 50ms lag.
- 100% of the songs would be on the local hard drive.
- The player would use OCR (optical character recognition) that would translate the pixilated text and clean it up with a solid background.
- An app that would queue up songs based on a fair round robin algorithm with a lot of flexibility.
- A clean smooth scrolling scroll bar showing the next 1-5 singers. (Siglos does this well)

With this setup all you would need to bring to a gig is the microphones, laptop, speakers, and a few books sorted by artist and song.

Meaning you bought a copy of everything he ripped - meaning you bought a pirated copy since you don't actually own the discs they were ripped from!

exactly, it would be like me selling copies of the Star Wars trilogy that i bought. if i make copies and sell them, that is piracy and stealing from (now) Disney. that is a sale of their movie that i have stolen from them.
stealing is stealing, the talk about lawsuits is because of people like you two. he made copies of his discs (nothing wrong there) he sold them to you (big no no in any industry) and who knows who else. now that it became so rampant, that professional hosts (like most of us here) have to pay to avoid being dragged to court to help make up the loss.

Maybe I did not make myself clear enough in the original post. Here it is again.

I bought my collection from an ad on Craigslist. The guy was a DJ and died of a heart attack. They sold me all the CD’s and a copy of a hard drive that he ripped the songs to. As I posted above the CD’s are in bad shape from him moving them around so much. THIS IS NOT PIRACY!!!!

It seems like you guys jump to conclusions a little too fast and you harass new members trying to learn. This website will not last if this is how you treat new members.

Wow all my reviews on different software were deleted. I was accused of piracy and my post was moved. I own copies of the CD’s. Why would someone delete all those posts?

Welcome to the micro-cosm of the Sound Choice world. The first thing that will happen is that you will be accused of being a criminal. Check! The second thing is that you will have to prove that what you are saying is true. Third thing is that someone will be asking you for money to validate that you proved that you were innocent in the first place. Thank you for playing.

It is also here:
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=26755&p=348156#p348156

I ask that you consider what has happened to this industry and the reaction to someone posting about a large instant catalog. People have taken large catalogs, made files from them and sold them repeatedly for a small fraction of what they are worth. These copies aren't licensed and several of the manufactures blame these pirated copies for mass losses. KJ's blame them for a watered down industry where anyone can instantly enter the market with little or no up front cost.

So people here will jump when someone posts about a huge instant catalog. If you havee the original disks, no matter the shape, you are good to go; especially if you are just doing it for fun.

Bruce, do you for 1 second believe that anyone has ORIGINAL CDG's for 250,000 songs? I'm going to be generous a assume 15 songs per cd, that would mean that someone would have to own more than 16,000 different cd's and probably closer to 25,000. We are in America, but common sense still needs to come into play. Even if someone claims to only do home parties.....how long do you think it will take take before all their friends will have a copy of all those songs.....and how long do you think it will take before 1 of them thinks it would be neat to be a KJ?

disclaimer: This example is for dicussion purposes only. Similarities to anyone is purely coincidental.

I understand that piracy is a bad thing and it hurts many industries. I am not part of that. Everything was deleted in this thread back to Oct. I am shocked that would happen. The conversation from me was 100% about different software for Karaoke. Can they bring it back?

The largest karaoke CD collection I've ever personally seen was around 14,000 discs.

I believe Athena's collection is larger than that, but I've never seen it.

You bought the collection from a guy that carried the CD's, but the question is: Are they the original disk or copies  The pro KJ's here probably don't have 250K songs in their hard drives and you would have all these songs all ripped with the original CD's for home use  Wow, you are one lucky person

Sheesh. Let the backpedaling begin!

You can fix this instantly. Put all the discs on your kitchen table and take picture. We would all love to see such a diverse & large collection.
We will also love to see hell freeze over, but that's another subject.

It is a funny thing, as demo allows only 250 songs... To get more into the database you need a full version. Or wait, maybe you get it along with the discs from Craigslist, huh?
