Hey Blue!

Don't remember our exact conversation, but on my website, I had mentioned on a couple of occasions that it was a great non-smoking venue.

To be honest, they shot themselves in the foot with the failure at the place. They wouldn't advertise in the right circles, they wanted us to start at 10PM... all their customers knew the place closed around 11PM (they were experimenting with us on remaining open longer), they had the opportunity to bring children into the shows (they could stay at the lower levels) for a couple hours... and they refused...

the construction from the city streets and intersections and the mall just put the nails in the coffin. The beast was already dead! !

Could somebody please give me some examples of bluegrass? Titles and Artists, please.

BSS did a fine example of mainstream Bluegrass with "Uncle Pen".

DRAGONLADY: Never heard of the "Nashville Teens" - are they "NewGrass"? There is some of that cropping up.

Here's some artists :

Rhonda Vincent, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris Band, Allison Krauss, The Cox Family, Laurie Lewis, Kathy Kallick- these are new bluegrass artists, but all female songs. Rhonda Vincent is a rising bluegrass artist, and alot of her songs are on karaoke. Patty Loveless also, but she was singing pure "country" for years, and just recently went back to her bluegrass music. Check out her cd called "Mountain Soul". Rounder Records has alot of women bluegrass songs. (not karaoke)

If ya wanna learn the "old " original bluegrass stuff- it was mostly men. When bluegrass began it was a "man's" genre. Honestly, that's the way it was. They are only now starting to recognize women in bluegrass at all. Thanks to people like Allison, Patty, & Rhonda.

So check out also Bill Monroe (the father of BG music), Ralph Stanley, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, Hazel Dickens, Ginny Hawker, Wilma Lee Cooper, Mac Wiseman, many others. These are the original true "bluegrass" people.

What some people call BG may not really be BG at all. It was originally just soulful mountain music, usually hauntingly sad songs about lost love & people dying, and alot of it was gospel music. It was always "unplugged" music. NO drums, electric guitars, keyboards, etc. It consists of acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bass fiddle, & sometimes other instruments like steel guitar, dulcimer, or hammer dulcimer. (and kitchen spoons and washboards, haha) And there are usually always musical breaks in the song where the fiddle, mandolin, banjo (sometimes more than 1 instrument) will play a lead piece. And it usually always has someone singing "high lonesome" tenor. Bluegrass harmony is like no other harmony. Some don't like it, cause it's a real high pitched, nasal sounding tenor.

Check out some of those artists, you can listen to clips of most of them on the website of CMT. That way you'll get a better understanding of Bluegrass and what it really is.

I wouldn't be the expert on if they are bluegrass or not. I say, if you believe it is- then sub it under bluegrass. I'm sure we'll all like it !!
I just meant I haven't heard of them before. There are lots of new bluegrass people cropping up. I'm interested to hear this song- so I'm gonna have to watch for it. And I'm spending time this morning listening so maybe I'll see it. (hopefully)

I'll be looking for it. I'm glad to see more people taking an interest in bluegrass, cause it sure is fun to sing. Can't wait to hear yours.

If you ever have the opportunity to attend a Bluegrass festival, by all means GO!!! BG folks know how to have a fun time and will share their knowledge with youngters just starting or others just wanting to "learn a new lick or two." As BSS said, the harmonies are phenomenal! And, it's the only genre of music where you'll see youngsters singing with old folks and not be embarassed to do it! The music is every bit as important as the vocals...if not more so. It's very high energy! Everyone enjoys themselves!!

My John and I used to go to several Bluegrass "pickin' and grinnin'" sites around the Knoxville area. The 1st karaoke disk we bought was a Chartbuster Bluegrass disk. That was 7 or 8 years ago and it still gets a lot of play. So, search the web for a festival near you...and GO!!
