I for the most part don't enjoy singing solo a capella, but I love singing in quartets. For a couple of years I sang at the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA during the holidays with a some quartet groups. We were Dickens Era Carolers in full costume and character. We had to sightsing from a songbook with about 30 a capella christmas songs . It is the only paying gig I have ever done and it was amazing! I would do it all year long if they'd let me!

A capella is actually quite difficult when done well. True, if you sing a capella, you can choose to sing in any key your heart desires and you can make as many free interpretations as you like since you don't have to fit it in with any accompaniment, so in this respect, singing a capella is easy. However, as I have seen, most a capella singers will start a song in one key and gradually will drift upward or downward ever so slightly in pitch (meaning either sharp or flat the song) resulting in the song finishing in a completely new key.
A real test of a capella singing is singing as part of an a capella choir. EVERYONE must be on the same page, and yet sharping or flatting a song can be common (even though the whole choir will usually do this as a unit). A capella singing basically means you have no back-up or guide to get you through a song and that your singing is completely exposed for the world to hear.

Anyone interested in a-capella might want to give a look at Sound Choice 8891. It's an a-capella karaoke disc. Well, sort of. I ordered mine a week or so ago and will pick it up a little later this week with the rest of my order. If you've never done a-capella before and want to try it you might want to give it a look.... (no affiliation, blah, blah, standard disclaimer, blah, blah - order from the sponsors, blah, blah)
The songs (per the Sound Choice website):
MY GIRL (A CAPELLA VERSION) - THE TEMPTATIONS
THAT LONESOME ROAD - JAMES TAYLOR
LONGEST TIME, THE - BILLY JOEL
OPERATOR - MANHATTAN TRANSFER
PEOPLE GET READY - THE PERSUASIONS

TRAFFIC JAM (LIVE VERSION) - JAMES TAYLOR
IN THE STILL OF THE NITE (I’LL REMEMBER) - BOYZ II MEN
COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER - MEAT LOAF

I love singing a-capella and with music a lot of people do have trouble with it. I'm a songwriter and a lot of people ask me to sing some of my songs and I usually sing them a-capella and I hear all the time how can you sing without music so apparentley a lot of people think its hard, but I find it just comes natural to me!

I don't find it hard either...especailly on the songs I sing alot
For example, with unwanted, I have sang that song so many times that I can sing it, then add the music to it and still be on key. It just comes with memorizing the notes and how I hear them I guess.
I don't know. It is frustrating for me cause the music just seems to screw me up. I guess it just comes with bad karaoke hosts not turning up the mic enough and always having the feeling of having to scream to be heard.

Yeah I hate that about some karaokee places. If it happens even once I usually never go back.
