Okay.....we (me any my coworkers) were discussing music at lunch one day, and singing acapella vs. with music came up.
I said that I would much rather sing acapella as I think it is 10 times easier....and they all thought I was crazy (they are not really music peopele....one plays quitar, and the other two just listen to music)
Anywho, I was just wondering as to why lots of people think it is harder to sing without music. If I had the choice, there would never be music for me as I feel I have more control over my voice (or maybe that is cause I am just not that experienced yet).
What does everyone else think???

I think it's easier...but I don't do it much, 'cos I like to 'hide' behind the music...At the library where I work, the acoustics are excellent in our foyer and a friend of mine and myself sing out there all the time! (When the library is closed of course!!) It's nice to be able to sing in exactly the key you want to...

Acapella is easier because you are the pilot.... when music is added... you are the co-pilot .... flying on instuments ... ok.... nobody is laughing.... ehem.... sorry!!! As a listener.... I prefer to listen to a song with music simply because it is a complete experience... turn it up gramma!!

god yeah acapella is a lot easier...not only do you not have to worry what key you sing your song in, you can do just about what you wish with your voice add as many vocal acrobatics as you want its easier to put your own personality into acapella than it ever is emotion into backing music

YAY!
I am glad I was not going crazy !
The best part about acapella is that if you are off key a little, there is no music that is perfectly pitched to say...hey look how she is off key
Thanks for your opinions

I think that the reason it feels easier to some people to sing acapella is for the simple fact that there are less restraints.. Without music, you are not constrained by timing, tempo, rhythm, and to some degree pitch.. If you don't have to match an instrument.. there's no such thing as being out of tune or time for that matter. tho you can get out of your key center. The majority of people will tend to flatten as they sing a song, even if it isn't very noticeable because some people will just gradually do it.
People who have some problems with pitch and keeping on a melody on their own, and/or some slight timing problems will probaly usually say that singing with the music is easier because it gives them a guide to help them stay on pitch
People who have a little more severe rhythm and/or pitch problems will probably say acapella only because the music doesn't help them, it only magnifies the problem.. They can do an acapella song that may be pitchy or off rhythmically, but be more satisfied because it doesn't clash with the music.. most people with decent ears will hear the problems anyways but it may not offend so much as if it were put with music
People who have really good pitch can go either way. It's personal preference at that point. Some people will say acapella because they like the freedom it allows and aren't bothered if it sinks slightly in pitch here or there just a pinch. (most people would never notice since it isn't being directly tuned to another instrument yet rather just a relative tuning intervalically with its own pitch center), Others will say with music because it "keeps them honest" and adds another dimension to the performance...
and then there are people like me who are indifferent .. I like singing both ways and find neither much more challenging than the other. I will say that since I am quite picky on myself with tuning, I usually consider acapella to be a little more demanding of my concentration and energy to tune the intervals so that they won't bother me when listening back..
I guess it all just depends on your abilities, strengths and weaknesses and likes and dislikes that you have about the two types of singing...

actually good point jazzy i don't think pitch has been my one main problem but i do find timing is my downfall if there is one thing that i try to work on more than anything it is timing and i do get frustrated at myself i would probably make people die with laughter watching me record a song cause i am counting beats and all sorts ...obviously when i sing acapella i choose the timing and it doesn't have to be so stringent....good points

I prefer singing with music. When it comes to music I'm a follower. I like to have the music lead me somewhere. I can keep time and maintain tempo, etc by myself but when I have music it relieves me of the burden so I can concentrate on my singing. It forces me to push myself to match the pitch and key of the music developing my own abilities.
Singing acappella is like spotlighting me. I'm the only thing you hear so any mistake that comes out is just me. I can hid anomolies within the music itself so we're more complementary creating something neither of us would be alone.
I appreciate good acappella music and have great respect for those people that can sing that way - especially when they harmonize as part of a group - ie barbershop quartets, boyzIImen, etc. I'm either just lazy (probably) or just not comfortable enough with my voice to sing without accompaniment just yet. Perhaps in time I'll change my mind, but I've only been singing and paying attention for about 6 months.

I think most people prefer singing with music just because it gives you somewhere to hide when you don't hit everything just right. I know I do. I understand the advantages of acapella, though, and I can think of a few songs I've tried to sing to music where the way the original recording was done just doesn't seem to fit the way I want to sing it. I'll experiment with acapella, but I wouldn't do a whole song, and certainly wouldn't subject an audience to it.

Mikey, you're a trip!
Good morning, Sher and all!!
I'm scheduled to sing the National Anthem on Veteran's Day acapella and I"m kinda nervous about it. Why, cuz I do like to "hide behind the music"! I always prefer to sing with music. Guess I'm just not confident enough!

Luly,
You have nothing to be nervous about. With that beautiful voice of yours you don't need to music to hide anything. You go out there and knock 'em dead.
ritisroo,
I think that it's easier to sing acapella too. There are a lot of songs that I can sing in the shower but when I try them with musical backing I can't seem to find the right key. I have the most trouble with harmonizing with another singer. Now that's restrictive.

Thank you Tony and Wannabe for that wonderful vote of confidence! Guess I should keep telling myself if they asked me to sing, it's because I can do the job!
Doesn't ease the nerves any though. I always just try to picture myself in my living room singing to myself whenever I have something like this. I did this song at the July 4th party this year and I did ok there. There were hundreds of people, but I managed to get through it! It was at night time right before the fireworks went off. I was on a stage with lights shining right in my eyes, so I couldn't see the audience. This time, though it'll be during the day, so I won't have that extravagance!! Hehe, I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet...oh the pressure!

My humble opinion about a capella vs. with music:
I believe a capella is the ultimate test of our skills whatever they may be.Simply because there's nowhere to hide or run. It's a reality check that we must be willing to face to see where we really stand as a performer. Singing without music doesn't mean that we can go off pitch. That my friends, will let us know where we stand in our aspirations. I respect different opinions also. This is just the way I feel about the subject in question.

You are so right, Tony. But I like how the music enhances what you've already got.
