How many of you have Antares Autotune and Helicon Voiceworks plus?
How do you feel this can effect the playing field?
Do you think it can pull work otherwise out of your bounds?

I am thinking this is a topic heading that may lure in Johnny Reverb, if not for the wrong reasons.

I have a TC Helicon C1 Voicetone that I use at the house. I've used it a few times for my own enjoyment singing songs that are a little above my normal range.

Not sure if all Autotune is this way, but my C1 has a bit of delay that can be distracting at first. I also find myself trying to vocally match the correction and have to consciously avoid it.

Not sure how well it would work with someone unfamiliar with it in a show environment.

My opinion:

Autotune is the scourge of the music industry.
Autotune is the pile of steaming poo in a pristine powder snow field.
Autotune is equivalent to ever bad memory of every person that has screwed you over. Ever.
Autotune is like learning you have leprosy, herpes, and alzheimers moments after you just find out you are also immortal.

Oh yeah....I don't like it either.

I have the older TC Helicon Voicetone Synth which is an Autotune/EFX pedal. It's fun for that effect and does the job. I and my patrons used it quite a bit when I first got it two years ago. Now, not so much.

My kids do love using it at home to talk like robots though.

It can be fun at karaoke. But it wont turn a terrible singer into Adelle.

I am going to open my mind for just a moment here -

I am obviously biased very much away from them from a sound and vocal capability perspective, but the cost of implementing devices like this is also a turn off. Seems out of proportion with the level of use they would actually get.

I have never even been to a karaoke show where I have detected Autotune being used. I have only been to one karaoke show where anything more than ech, reverb, and other minimal effects were used. The exception was a show in Hollywood ('nuff said).

For KJ's -
How many of you use Autotune or some other form of vocal DSP besides what comes built into a board? (I mean going beyond the basics of echo, delay, reverb, and a few preset things like flanging).
How many shows have you seen that leverage this stuff?

For Singers -
Is this something you look for or expect?
Does it make a difference to you when looking for a show?

I can't justify it at all right now until I either pick up nights or get another gig. But if there is enough interest I will consider adding it to the to-do list (for after I die and the business passes to my grandchildren).

i would LOVE to have something for home recording and maybe to bring to the occasional show for kicks, but right now I just can't justify the money. I am still paying my parents back for the set of 4 snow tires I have on my car *pain in the butt, but SO worth it*

Besides, now that I'm not doing my own shows I have found that some people can be a little touchy about you bringing them extra equipment to test or set up.

I personally wouldn't care, but I can still understand why others might.
