Sing with a Live Band in Edmonton! I was at Ceilis Downtown Jameoke, and had a blast! The band was awesome, and it was way cooler than kareoke singing with a band. Anyone ever go?

Im from Portland, Oregon and we have a karaoke band called Karaoke From HEll that plays at Dantes downtown Portland on Monday night. Its really cool there a 5-piece and have aobut a 200 song selection. ITS the BOMB! I did a story on them in Portland's Positively Entertainment and Dining Magazine last year. Karaoke Scene acutally published a photo of me singing at a Karoake From Hell show in the August 2003 Issue. So if you get a chance to do something like this with a real band--dont miss out!!

I was there one Saturday, a few weeks ago!

I thought it was real neat, but I don't think that I will be returning for two reasons:

1) As they are a band (and guys at that), they don't have a great selection of woman music to sing, aside from a couple of songs (Hit me Baby One More Time, Heavin is a Place on Earth, I will Survive). I mean you can't fault them for that, as I think they play pretty well. Just not the kind of music that I like.

2) There were these two people there that kept on telling me that I was "Stealing" all the songs that they sang!

They looked like they were friends of the band, or regulars, but I was really put off by that (especially cause there is only a very limited selection). I don't know if they do that to Everyone who takes "their songs", but I probably won't go back.

However, it was definately an interesting experience to say the least! It was fun to try, and definately different than karaoke :)

BTW

Do you go to karaoke anywhere else in the City?

If so, where? I go everywhere, so perhaps I have even seen you around :)

Singin' with a band is an awesome feeling..feeling the bass , watching the guitarist do his thang , feeling the crowd response...it's all great , but every band is limited to "What they know" and usually what they like! , with karaoke...the "band" knows thousands of songs , and can play EVERY genre of music at the touch of a button  ohhh yeah...it's almost impossible for me to get the guys together at 1:00 in the morning , when I feel like singing,,,hehe

Singing with a band,it is new to kararoke,it is called jamaroki

omg, has it come to that? lol...its new?

when i was playing in a band, we played 6 nights a wk, for yrs... and we did let some people set in....but most i found were just down right to scared to get up in front of people to sing.....

Now as far as Karaoke goes, i feel its great for people who for the most part don't have the talent to sing in a band....heck its even fun for those who USE to sing in a band...different but fun....but i have found on this site that there r lots more that SHOULD be singing in bands then in some local karaoke club....
But karaoke has put soooooo many bands out of work....no longer do u see 6 nights a wk gigs, 2 to 3 at the most, you can't live on that....i always said...i'm either going to sing for a living r i'm not...there would be no part time jobs, all r nothing....and i did for 15 yrs....givin the chance theres alottta people on here who could make a living at it....a very good living....but they won't get that chance as long as anyone and everyone can go to a karaoke club and sing....why should they pay to hear you sing when they themselves can get up to sing.... the last karaoke club i went to i had to PAY to get in to do what? thats right, here myself sing...lol... am i missing something here? not to long ago THEY paid for the intertainment, NOT YOU....now the intertainments not only free to them buttttt ur paying THEM to do it.... Strange in deed....why am i typeing this? heck i don't no...lol....

having said this...i do think karaoke is a great thing, its just keeping some really great singers from doing what they really want to do, and thats making a living singing....and its also keeping some great musicians down, because now they have no outlet....

sorry i just thought the comment...singing with a band, its new to karaoke was kinda funny.... and sad at the same time...sorry just rambling

I totally can see your point, ok what now!

I mean I would much rather spend a night singing at karaoke than going to see a band anyday...just because you get to sing!

If I have a friend playing in a band, I will definately go out and cheer them on, but for me, it is hard to watch a band, cause I know that could be me singing up there......and it makes me sad!

I also think that it is hard for bands cause you would have to be pretty good for them to book you...can't just have anyone up there!

I definately would love to sing in a band a few nights a week, but definately would not plan on making any money doing it. I think it is a pretty tough business. I just would like to do it because I like to sing, and I think that it is a great way to get exposure....cause you never know who may be in your audience LOL!

Karaoke with bands is nothing new. It's called "jam night". Only difference is instead of everyone bringing in instruments & singers to play with the band, it's just the singers.

I've heard of this jamaoke...something or other, but I didn't know we had anything like it here in the City of Champions!!! WHOO! I gotta go.... I've been to Ceilie's a few times... What days do they have this thing?

hey rawker... maybe I'll see ya there sometime!! If they don't have much selection as Rits says... It would still be cool just to check it out. Hopefully this will be a trend that catches on a litte more, huh? What days do they have this thing?

It is every Saturday Night at Celi's (or however you spell it) LOL!

It is the one at downtown (104 Avenue) by the future shop downtown.

They are supposed to start at 9:00, but they could possibly start at 10:00 (that is what time they did when I was there)...so between 9:00 and 10:00.

I would suggest to bring a piece of paper and a pen....they were kinda lacking that for requests sheets last time, and I ended up using scraps from my purse LOL!

I definately think that it is worth checking out, and who knows, maybe they have added a few songs since I have been there last :)

I never know what is going on around town either. They never annonce anything, and when they do, it is not big!

I just heard about this Jamoke because it was on the news one night, and I just happened to be watching (which is rare!)

Speaking of news, did you ever see on CFRN when they did that thing about the Edmonton Eskimo that sings karaoke (Dorian Boose)?

It was pretty cool cause I was hosting that night, and a couple of my friends got to be on TV!

Darn it! I missed the CCMA's, so I wouldn't know.

Could have been another Eskimo.

This was quite awhile ago (Last year I think).....

That has been in Vegas for a few years.

I think the Palms has it still. (I'll check next month when I'm there)

I would love to find something like local to me! Has anyone heard of anything like that in Southern California? or Inland Empire?

My brother played in a band for 6 or so years and they recently had to call it quits when their drummer had to have surgery on his wrists. Anyways, I have written a few songs here and there and they put music to one of them for me. So, when I went to their shows, they'd call me on stage to sing, depending on the type of crowd. It's a very different style than theirs, but I'll tell you what, It was an awesome feeling singing with a band behind me and seeing the audience enjoy and appreciate it.
