Which is better - Sehnnheiser E835 or Sure SM58 for vocals? I know the SM58 is the "industry standard", but looking at the specs, both mics are VERY close to each other. I have used both and would like others input on them.

Thanks. Jay - Outlaw Entertainment

I would ask you to post a link to the specs so we could compare the two but I am not sure if either are a sponsor to this site and therefore a link would be deleted... -tig

It's all a matter of personal taste between the 2. Some hate the SM58 - I think it's because they want to use something other than the norm personally because there isn't any reason otherwise. Best way is to listen to them both side by side. They are both good mics, my preference is for the SM58 because of it's durability, reliability & great sound. The 835 isn't any better or worse, just different sounding. It's a little sharper sounding & can tend to feedback faster if not held correctly, other than that it's a good mic as well. HOWEVER, the 835 does come in a 3 pack for $200 which helps make the scale tip a little more in their favor.

I looked at the specs on both of these a while back. They are VERY similar and IIRC the Senn e835's ($200 for 3) actually have a flatter response w/ more range. The SM58 ($100 each) wins on durability though.

BTW, I opted for the Fender P-51's instead. $50 each, durable, and comes with the cable. I talked with someone who does studio work who rated the P-51's between the PG-58 and SM-58.

The Beta 58 is a MUCH better mic, but it's also $160.

The SM58 use to be the standard in the industry but things change! I own one but no longer use it because for $10,00 more I was told I can get a much better mic which I can now confirm, it's the Audio-Technica ATM41HE.

Shure will not give you enough clarity in your voice.

The optimum choice of live mic depends on your voice. And thus for someone it might be the sm58, for others the Audix etc...

BTW. anyone know a music store in NJ where you can actually sing into the different mic's to find the one that fits you?

I use an Audix OM3xb and love it.. very crisp and good feedback rejection. If I dont go wireless and/or headset, my next mic will probably be an Audix Om5.

If you know of any music stores at all, most should be willing to do side by side comparisons, if not, go to another store.
