I am sure they have a way to reconcile purchased credits. This would be basic functionality.

Most likely when you purchase new credits or do a song update, your unlock history is uploaded back to the mothership so they know how many and what songs you have unlocked with your purchased credits. They would need this information in order to prosecute someone for using an ill-gotten or hacked unlocked song or a song with fudged serial numbers in the graphics. Also if they see that more songs are being unlocked than the user has purchased credits for, it would let them know that their security has been cracked.

Good Answer!

I think having a visible registration number would be a great deterrent to piracy. I might even go a step further and put the owner's name in the file. Why is this such a bad idea?

One original disc only exists "once." A registration number can exist in a number of different locations no matter who it is registered to.

Danny G had his entire Gem set swiped, if that hits the net, there's no way to prevent it from spreading and no way that CB can enforce anyone selling a drive with their previous registration information on it.

If you're using the unlocked files registered to me and CB files a suit against you, how are they going to prove you didn't purchase them from me? There's no rule that says I can't loan you my HD, or rent you my HD so without my cooperation, they're up a creek and what would be in it for me? A pat on the back?

I haven't heard of any "contractual agreement" being present governing the usage/sales/rent/loaning of this new product.

But, here is the deal. The hardrive that is purchased from CB has locked song on it. When you unlock the song (purchase with credit) that song is no longer on the hd and moved to a file off the hd where ever you have selected it to be stored for later use so even if you loaned the hd or it was stolen it would be of no use to anyone unless you had the means to crack the encryption of those files (we're talking the average thief not a computer code writer). I don't think many kjs are going to "loan" or "rent" the drive to anyone else to use. If sombody wanted to "borrow" mine I tell them to go buy their own.

That would be the way to update it if one computer cant be moved.

Really?! When you unlock a song it is un-encrypted and then moved (instead of copied then moved)? That just seems odd.

So if you lose your unlocked copy you can never pay and unlock it again?

NO! They are NOT deleted from the drive. I tested it. They are just deleted from your searchable songlist, since you will already own the song. Delete the unlocked song from your songlist and the locked listing will reappear.

Ah, good. That makes a LOT more sense.

I was preparing to buy a bunch of monthly update discs when this came out as I was getting behind on some of the new releases. This will probably work out much better in the long run so I just pulled the trigger...hope it's here by next weekend!

Used mine last night for a gig, I only had 10 credits unlocked. Ran out of them and couldn't unlock more as I couldn't get an internet connection. I should have unlocked more and in the future will.

By the way, not a hitch!

That is exactly what happens. You can only unlock a song once from the drive.

So, when you deleted the song and it reappeared on the unlock list but you are still out a credit for the first purchase.

No, more in line with a multi-rigger buying the same song for each of their systems and transferring it to that system, without having to needlessly buy a second or third drive. Each song would show a separate purchase record and I would imagine, have a separate id number.

I didn't delete the actual song file (of which I would be solely responsible and thus deserve to lose the credit), I just deleted it from the searchable songlist. I did this strictly as a test, afterwords I recataloged the song file, the unlocked song reappeared and the locked version disappeared. I'm assuming they are just comparing what you have to the available Media Pro files, if you've already unlocked a song, the locked version is not provided, seems logical to me.

Well I could be wrong, but don't u actually have to purchase a drive to obtain an account to purchase credits. In other words, if u wanted two separate accounts for two separate computers, you'd still have to buy two drives.

Ordered a drive yesterday. Is there anyway I can get a copy of the csv file beforehand so I can have the books ready the same day I get the drive?

The only listing of the songs that are on the drive is posted on Invicion's site and it's not in csv form. Maybe someone who has the drive can post one up for you.

I could post the file but it changes for me every week since I continuly unlock songs and updated the hd with added songs from CB at regular intervals.

Here is the song list from the Compuhost (karaokeware) website for the HD Media Pro HD in excel format within a zipped folder, from there you can export to csv if that is what you need.

Note: they claim there are 11567 songs on the hardrive and there verywell may be but there is only 11048 in there song list. Probably just an old list as CB keeps adding songs available for this drive and you would be able to connect and download the locked songs to this drive. (as i understand) so in essense, if I understand correctly, you would have access to the entire Chartbuster catalogue provided you kept up on your end with the connect and dl of new material...please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the link. I got the drive faster than I expected, unfortunately it arrived an hour before I left for a weekend trip so I didn't get to play with it until I got back.
I upgraded to the new Compuhost, and at my first gig the filler player started playing two songs at once. Discouraged, I used a media player for the rest of the night with manual cross-fades (ON A MOUSE!), boy was I pissed.
After screwing around when I got home, (and losing 49 credits when I re-installed compuhost DOH!, it's alright, I can spend that much money in 20 minutes at the strip club) I found a work around.
Invicion said they're well aware of the problem and working on it, in the meantime...
I did this at my show tonight and it didn't fail:
I start off the filler music with the option set to NO on "pause filler music after fadeout". Then, during that song, I switch it to "Launch new filler song after each karaoke performance". It plays out, and keeps counting down in silence while the next singer goes, then, both songs get the green light so to speak, then one turns red, and the other yellow. After that I was golden for the rest of the show. The only downside I saw was that I lose the first six seconds or so of each filler song.
Apparently this is only a problem if you regularly use the different song each time feature. I like to use it because when it's busy, I have a bunch of short throw-back songs like the ducktales theme, saved by the bell, punky brewster, & Lavern & Shirley on there that people really get a kick out of, but they aren't dance songs that really get people going or bummed out when I cut them short because I need to get singers through fast.
The filler music feature has always irked me, because if I mess with it too much at a show, compuhost crashes. We'll see if this has been remedied. One change I do like, is that it seems the fadeouts are defaulted to run right up to the karaoke song, thus mitigating the dreaded dead air.
