Ok, last night was my first night w/ my new mixer - Soundcraft Compact 10. Setup went well, got hooked up, connected the mix output (balanced 1/4" TRS connection to the JBL Eon XLR-F input), brought up the level to 0db - and nothing. Move the connection to the monitor output (same type of 1/4" balanced TRS output) and it plays just fine. Move back to mix and - nothing. Try other mix output - nothing. Both monitor outputs work just fine.

Am I just an idiot and can't work this mixer, or is there a problem with the mixer?

BTW, the show went fine, I just turned all the used channels to monitor and got through the show, but I have another gig next week and I'd like to use the monitor outputs for monitors instead of using the recording outputs to drive the monitors (not pretty, but it worked!).

well not getting a chance to read the manual yet, by looking at the picture, there is a button on the bottom of the channels Rec/Mix.
Since you said the Record out worked for the monitors & you had the mains working on the monitor out, it almost seems you had that button pushed so the mix was going to the record out & not the mix out. It also looks as though there might be a button to switch between monitor/main & a main volume pot possibly right under the main mix output.
That is what I can see right off, but that mixer is still very new & I haven't ever seen one here yet to play with.

The mixer has two buttons at the botton of each channel for record and monitor. The monitor button is so you can see the output on the led's and feed it to the monitor. My understanding from the manual is that it allows for determining which feeds go to the recorder and/or monitor - but all feeds would go to the mix. Perhaps this is what's stumping me on that part.

Remember that this mixer is designed for a wide variety of applications with the primary being use with a computer/DAW. I've worked with this quite a bit on the recording side without any problems, but this was the first time I used it to provide a mix to larger speakers off the mix outputs (read that as: for a live show).

Maybe that's my misunderstanding, that the channels I'm recording don't go to the mix outputs. I was under the impression that you can record only the channels you want from the main mix - not that they would be eliminated from the mix.

Ok, maybe I'm just confused... I'll read the manual again (already read 4-5 times to make sure I wasn't missing anything) and give Soundcraft a call on Monday if I can't get it cleared up by then. Fortunately, they offer technical support on this sort of thing (just found that out from the website!).

BTW, this mixer is widely available throughout the US, including from the normal channels like MusiciansFriend.com. I bought mine from a local psuedo-dealer (They're not an official Soundcraft Dealer but make arrangements to carry a few items through thier distributor). I've been looking at the new GigRac 1000 which seems pretty nice (just released). 500x2 for main or split between main/monitor outputs. It would be a nice all in one unit but at this point I really like the flexibility of the Compact 10 (especially since I'm considering moving to computer based hosting and adding DJ work in the near future) and will likely be adding seperate amps/speakers or powered speakers (shopping now).

Well from what I read it almost looks like you had the rec switch depressed so the signal wasn;t going to the main mix. This is the only thing I could see. The way you described it, this almost has to be the case since you said you were using the monitor out for the mains & the rec out for the monitors since the only way the rec outputs would get a signal is if the button was engaged.

Ahhhh.... so if you record the channel it doesn't go to the mix? Seems a strange way to handle it - especially if you're wanting to record from a live show. I guess you can always pull the recording signal from the mix outputs when it's sent to an eq or other final stage for processing.

I'll try hooking it up again in the next day or two and see if I can reproduce the problem and see if I can get output from the main outs w/ the recording turned off (I thought I did that when setting up, but I'll double check).

Hmmm..... learn something new every day!

I set up again yesterday and with the recording buttons off I was able to play out through the mains and mix just fine.

From what I was able to determine - if you're recording a channel it doesn't go tothe main outputs on this mixer.

To be honest, I don't know if I would have realized this without your assistance since I didn't find anything relating to this in the manual.
