And others ... Great Topic as I've been saving for a maximizer and compressor units... I saw the other day a
BBE MAXCOM which is a new unit (i think) compressor /limiter/gate and incorporates the SONIC MAXIMIZER IN ONE UNIT FOR ABOUT $200usd

Any one see this unit in action ? Is it better to get (1) unit that does it all or seperate Compressor and maximizer units ?

I haven't heard it, but the drawback I can see is that you would typically only use a compressor on the vocal channels (sure you can put them on other things as well - including the main mix) so you would only get the benefit of the Maiximizer effect on the vocals only.
I would personally rather have 2 separate units, compressor for vocals & maximizer for main mix.

Good point ...So (2) seperate units would be better . a compressor units for the mic channels and the sonic maximizer for the overall mix?

Jam, That's exactly how I have mine setup and it works great. Your run you compressors on the channel inserts and you BBE on the main inserts along with any eq you may use.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I have noticed that my sonic maximizer made a bigger improvement in the sound when i was just using my AKJ7050 mixer amp. I just had it connected to my player and ran its output into my AKJ mixer/amp. Now with it connected via the main inserts on my CFX12 board, I can only see a slight increase in the sound comming out. Previously, I always kept process and contour nobs below midway point (a little less contour because I am using a sub). When I first got my bbe, I was amazed at how little I needed to adjust tone controls on the mixer. I just left it all flat and it sounded great. I am also noticing that I really need to boost the gain on the individual mic channels (especially the SM58) in order to get a decent level going into the main mix. Is this normal?

You have a little more quality equipment now, so the BBE isn't going to make AS dramatic of a difference as it did with your previous set-up - but it still will make a difference. If you are trying to get an "increase" (by increase i'm assuming you mean volume??), that is not what it's designed for. You may have to make new adjustments since it is different equipment.
Sounds like you got the player turned up too high on the mixer. MOST players are ran comfortably at the 10 oclock position (the gain) on that board & the mics generally will be fine at Unity (straight up).
Where do you have everything set now??

Lonman:

Thanks for the advice. I had everything's gain set a unity (player and mics), I will reduce the gain on the music channel and see how that works. However, I have to finish putting up my hurricane shutters just in case this storm really hits.

Cheers
