I have another suggestion, Chip...How about you add the abillity to delete any songs that have any form of "w-vocal" in the title...whether it be in the artist field or the title field. That would delete many songs that never get sung.

There are various versions i.e. Wvocal, Wvocals, W-vocal, W-Vocal, W-Vocals, W-vocals. might be some others that aren't coming to mind right now....wvocal, w-vocal etc.

You can do this already yourself... Just open the "hoster.dat" file with wordpad and do a search for the word: "vocal" and delete the entire line. Just make sure that there are no blank lines.

OR....

You can rename hoster.dat to hoster.csv an open it with Excel and do searching and deleting as well... Just MAKE SURE that the last row (or last line in wordpad) has nothing on it but 3 asterisks+END+3 asterisks. Like this:--> ***END***

ALSO, make sure that you've downloaded the update.

okay. Just thought it would be easier if there was just another box to check to do the same thing.

I didn't downloaded the update. I deleted the program and then re-installed the complete version. It just seemed easier to do it that way for me so I knew I would have the entire thing in one place. It deleted a bunch of the dupes but not all of them. so I tried to use a smaller folder of songs so it wouldn't take so much time and it seems to have added the new folder to the previous folders total of songs. Do I have to delete something to start over from scratch or does just restarting the software and searching over write the previous running of the search action?

I'm not a techie by any stretch so I'm maybe asking stupid questions. I apologize if that's the case. I'm not sure if I even understand your instructions for searching for "vocal" and deleting a line. It's been fun trying to weed out the dupes in an effort to see how many individual titles I actually have but some songs just aren't named exactly alike and they wind up getting added in even though they are the same song by the same artist because the same song maybe something like Clapton, Eric - Wonderful Tonight and the other one is Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight.

It shouldn't be adding anything to anything... it is simply overwriting what was there previously with all new information.

No questions are stupid. Okay, the file named: Hoster.dat is nothing more than a text file. You can open it with wordpad. When you do, you'll see lines that look like this:

"7675","Stickwitu","Pussycat Dolls","0","0","BCI41560 2-10","Generic"
"7676","Probably Wouldn't Be This Way","Leann Rimes","0","0","BCI41106 2-07","Generic"
"7677","Baby Girl","Sugarland W-Vocals","0","0","BCI41106 2-08","Generic"
"7678","When I Think About Cheating","Gretchen Wilson","0","0","BCI41106 2-09","Generic"
"7679","How Far (W/vocal)","Martina McBride","0","0","BCI41106 2-10","Generic"

Do a search for the word "vocal" and simply erase the line or lines (in this case) that has "W-vocals" in it (Sugarland and Martina above). Just make sure that when you erase a line, you don't leave a blank line in it's place. (hit the F3 key to search for the next one... etc...)

Save the file.

Now, in your C:/book folder you'll find 2 (count 'em two) program files. Double-click on the one named: Mp3gBook.exe to start it. This will use the file you've just modified to create your books without doing the disc scan and the tracks you've eliminated won't be there.

so if there are thousands of songs with vocals to be removed , you have to do each one manually? That's an awful lot of mouse clicking. I don't know how it happened but when I tried to use a smaller folder to test the program I wound up with more duplicates deleted than songs that I have in the folder....by a large margin too. I think I'm just gonna remove the program and re-install it again and start over. LOL

Why not simply move the files with the word "vocal" in them to a different folder? You can do that in just a few keystrokes and be done with it. Just move them to a different drive...

1) create a folder on a different drive. One that you are NOT going to include in your book. Open this new (empty) folder and minimize it.

2) Using Windows Explorer, click on the search tool (magnifying glass) and perform a search where you are searching (checkbox) "Filenames ONLY"

3) Your search criteria will be: *vocal*.*
This will find ANY file that has that word in the filename.

4) Highlight all the tracks it has found and drag them to the newly-created empty folder. Windows will now place a copy of the track there. VERIFY that these copies have been placed there before the next step.

5) Now, delete the files in the search box. You will now have all the vocal tracks separated from the others. Perform your songbook scan again and you should be all set.

deleted Starland Vocal Band song. If I delete all of the songs it will take me forever to get them back in the folders where they belong. For some reason, KJ Pro has a button to remove all songs with vocals....I wonder why that is??? Oh yeah, because people think it's a good idea...but you keep coming up with reasons not to provide that function.......Oh that's right. It's FREE so why improve it? SIGH!!!

I guess I'll stick with KJ Pro

If you say so....

It's amazing how your demeanor has changed because I'm not jumping to accommodate your request. Sure, you'd like it to do what you want, but still want it free?... Was KJPro free too?

But why in the world would you include vocal versions in the first place?

"give 'em an inch.... and they want the whole enchilada"

Other people asked for additions/corrections and you gave it to them. I asked for one that I thought would improve your FREE gift to everyone and you fought the suggestion from the get go.....and I didn't ask you to JUMP. You could have easily said that it was a good suggestion and that you might eventually get around to making it happen. If you don't want to improve your program, DON'T! The vocal versions of songs help me to learn how to sing them but I wouldn't want them taking up space in my song book. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, Chip. I'm not mad but I'm not gonna beg you to do the right thing either. I survived this long without your free software. You asked people to play with your freebie and give you feedback. I did and you acted as if I backed you up against a wall or was twisting your arm to do something that would ruin your program. Enjoy the Holiday Season and I hope you get everything that you want for Christmas/Chanukah.

and by the way, I did get KJ Pro for free.

You've probably spent more time telling me how to work around the problem than it would have taken for you to write the code to fix the "problem".

He certainly tried to help you, Bruce, with several suggestions, even though you mentioned a feature that he didn't feel was a valuable asset to the program. You can hardly have sour grapes about him helping you, but it appeared from your previous posts that you do. I personally don't think the majority of KJs would even use that feature, since most don't choose to import the vocal versions when they're importing a disc. Just MHO.

I do wonder, though, if you have such high expectations from programmers every time you get a new program, whether you purchase it or it's free.

I JUST KNEW IT WOULDN'T TAKE LONG FOR THE LITTLE WOMAN TO PUT IN HER TWO CENTS....WHICH IS THE SAME TWO CENTS THAT HER MAN PUT IN.

PLEASE!!!! DON'T CHANGE A THING. STICK TO YOUR GUNS TIL THE END OF TIME. I DON'T CARE ANYMORE. I'VE DELETED THE PROGRAM FROM MY PC ALREADY SO YOU CAN DROP IT NOW.

Some people like to sing karaoke to the vocal version of a song because they don't have the confidence to sing by themselves. That's why some people import those version of the songs.

'ya know Bruce,

You could have moved all your vocal versions to a separate folder and made a book that contains ONLY your vocal versions and another book without them.

And you could have done that in LESS than 5 mins.

and then when I wanted to load them into Sax and Dotty's, I'd have to go through the process twice every time instead of once by clicking one just one folder with ALL of my songs in it. When I ran a search it listed all of the zip files and the cdg files and mp3 files with the word vocal in them. Don't sweat it Chip. I'm not saying anything negative about your software. I'm sure that it's just perfect just the way it for the majority of people, just not people like me who have their vocal versions in the same folder as their karaoke versions and want to keep them there. I'm running XP and I didn't see any box to click stating file names only. I'm just a guy who likes to sing. I don't much about computers AT ALL. I don't really have a need to actually print out a book. I thought your program would have been a good way for me to figure out how many individual titles I have in my collection minus the dupes and vocals. It didn't remove all of the dupes(my fault I'm sure because of the naming of some of them) and it didn't remove the vocal versions either. It didn't give me the number I was looking for so I no longer needed it. No harm no foul. It was free so it was just an excercise in futility for me. KJ Pro isn't perfect either. It forces me to type in many songs manually because they aren't in their data base. I felt that your program could use one more little tweak and you disagree. NO PROBLEM.

Hey Chip, I finally got around to trying your program and I hope you aren't burnt out on answering questions yet...

I'm running Compuhost on a 64 bit machine (a Gateway to be precise)
My song files are on the D: drive in the following format...

AH-2000-06 - Heart - Magic Man.zip

When I run the program I change the folder to the D drive to my "karaoke rips" folder where all my ripped tracks are and that seems to work ok. Then I hit the button that says select field order and choose the first option disk-track - artist - title. zip. That seems ok, but when I hit the "search" button an error window pops up which reads...

"Run-time error '75'
Path/File access error"

Is there something wrong with how I formatted my rips or what could cause that?

You are running on a 64-bit machine...... that's the bottle-stopper.

You need to do one of 2 things:

1. Run virtual PC in XP mode and run the program under that. If you don't already have Vitual PC then don't spend the money on it ($90) because you can simply.....

2. Run this on a different machine that is XP and not Win 7 or Vista. Just use your backup external drive as the source.

The problem is that Vista and win 7 both "hide" files when the program needs to get the folder listings. Consequently, the error is one that basically means that it cannot find the very same folder you just found seconds before..... It' a Vista / Win 7 problem.

(pisses me off too.)

You know what kills me, is there's always "that guy".

Dude, thank you.

Regardless of whether someone uses this program or not, there's always some guy that want's to be all holier than thou about it....probably eats Grey Poupon on his Oscar Mayer hot dogs, or at least wants you to think he does anyway.

Probably "gear name drops" too. Whatever you have, he has the upgraded version, that's louder, prettier, sounds better, and services him when his wife is away.

THANK YOU.

For taking time out of your life, and developing a program that not everyone can do, taking your time and skills that you're probably paid very well for (or could be) and making this program so I guy like me, who spends so DAMN much money on every other aspect of his business can actually catch a financial break and get something that does what I need it to, and not have to pay out the ear for it.

I find French's Horseradish mustard much more tasty than Grey Poupon.
