I know a lot of KJs who have started with the Chartbuster Essential sets. They seem to like them. Like many of these sets, it's a mixed bag, and many songs noone sings, but when you get that nice jewel of a song.... :-)

I'm very proud of my Sound Choice Foundation... Chartbuster really has a problem with good versions of Pop and Rock... sometimes they do it, other times it's just a grimace to hear them.

Speaking personally, between Sound Choice, Pioneer and Pop Hits Monthly, pretty much everything is covered. I love Sing To The World, Radio Starz and Zoom to help fill in some special niches!

While you won't hit 5000 tracks, after buying as much as I have in the last 3 weeks and comparing quality on a number of tracks from different vendors, I'd probably pick up the Foundations 1&2 from Soundchoice for a starter. I just bought these together on e-Bay for $520. Snag all the bricks next, I've seen all 5 together on e-Bay for about $535 in a buy it now.

That will give you approx 1500 quality tracks of the most commonly sung items (in most venues) with few to no duplicates. From there you can add on with other package deals from nearly any vendor - SoundChoice, DK (The Millenium is 1700 songs or so at $850 on e-Bay), Top Hits Monthly, Chartbuster, Priddis, Karaoke Bay, etc.

I only have about 2000 tracks and was complimented 4-5 times during my show the other night on my selection. I had some request for Sublime songs by two people, but 99% of the people were extremely happy with what I consider my extremely limited selection.

FYI, I'd stay away from those that sell 30,000+ songs w/ a player. I've tried asking these people more than once how the songs are licensed. Are they providing me a service on already owned discs or are they selling me new copies. Every time I ask I don't get any reply emails regarding the licensing. Until I get a better picture of the licensing on these I'll pass. We just had a club shut down here for a lack of licensing and the last thing I want is my stuff confiscated (Ouch!)!

I know this is late to the conversation, but I thought I'd offer my input on Sweet Georgia Brown. I've got one SGB disc and love it; it's my favorite one in my collection. However I've heard many others say they have bought SGB discs that were just terrible.

On mine, the sound quality is very good (e.g. excellent horns), but I admit the lyrics are occasionally wrong (though not by much) and the way the text is arranged on the screen can be disorienting. They often put the text up long before the singer is supposed to start, for instance, throwing the timing off.

I guess what I'm saying is that based on my experience, if the price was good I'd take a chance on SGB. Of course, I only use my discs for home use and not as a KJ. Your mileage may vary.

SGB has some problems, though I think some of their rock tracks are okay. If you get this set, remove the Weird Al disc and use it as a coaster.

I would stay away from Sweet Georgia Brown, they have pretty cheap sounding music. But I did pick up one that was good the other day SGB0026..but it looked different from the other ones that I have seen, this one had "ultra high quality" printed on it.

Like mentioned by Karaokemeister and co. If you have $2k to burn..go with Sound Choice foundations 1+2 and buy bricks 1-3 after that. And for really new music and maintaining your collection up to do date, buy Pop Hits Monthly series. If you want my personal opinion and rating about brands..
Sound Choice - 5 stars out of 5(Super Brand)
Priddis - 5 stars out of 5(Super Brand for performers, not KJs though)
Pop Hits Monthly - 5 stars out of 5
DKkaraoke - 4.5 stars out of 5(a small amount of bad songs, good KJ Brand)
Pocket Songs - 4.5 stars out of 5(a few bad songs)
Chartbuster - 4 stars out of 5(a few bad songs, decent KJ brand)
Music Maestro 3.5 stars out of 5(a few bad songs here and there)
Pioneer CDG - 3.5 out of 5(this is a vanilla brand, pretty decent though)
Top Tunes 3.5 stars out of 5 (Some are decent, a little cheezy sounding sometimes)
After this alot of hit and miss on these brands..some are 5+ and some are very bad.
Backstage - 1 out of 5(sounds like midi music)
Legends Star Series - 2 out of 5(synthezier sounds on everything)
Legends Bassline 2.5 out of 5 (some songs can be decent)
Sunfly 2.5 out of 5(good at new music, very bad at older/country)
Sweet Georgia Brown 2 out of 5 (almost like midi music, syntezised)
Top Hits 2 out of 5 (Some of the country can be decent)

These are the ones I can think of!

A couple brands not mentioned above are Karaoke Bay (Sterling), The Singing Machines and Party Tyme. All are largely consumer brands you'll find in department stores.

Karaoke Bay seems to be decenct - the sound is pretty good, but lacks a little depth. The sync between words/music is pretty good and the lyrics are almost always correct. The split upper/lower on duets is nice, but lacks the 'count off' you get in the solo songs. Not a 'professional' brand, it's geared mostly towards home use. I use a number of KB discs and have had no complaints other than the lack of 'count off' on duets.

Party Tyme - Hit and miss with this one. If you can find the same track on Sound Choice/Priddis/DK I'd go to them first. Quality is 'ok', but not my first choice.

The Singing Machine - These are the people that are doing the 'Original Artist' Motown tracks and MTV. The OA Motown and MTV seems decent evnough until you play them back to back against a simlar track. I have Rapper's delight on SC and MTV discs - the complete correct lyrics for the radio version are on the SC discs - the middle vocalist has different lyrics and it's shorter for the MTV discs. Again, for home use, I'd consider these ok, for a show I'd select a higher quality offering first, and then go with these if it's not available anywhere else.

Very good European music can be found with the ZOOM series. SGB is just kinda noisy, but I tend to like them on rock.

I would choose sound choice first over everything else. I bought one pop hits monthly cd and hate it. I've seen several other tracks at various venues and have yet to see a good one. I would rank this a 1 or less. For me it was a waste of money, it was only a little less than the sound choice discs, and I refuse to sing off it.

I ordered the SGB 66 disc set before this thread started and got them today. In listening to them they're mostly hit or miss... except for this Weird Al disc (Disc 23 IIRC). :puke:

Which engineer had the bright idea to run an applause track through most of the songs on this disc?!?!?!? Whoever it was should be shot. The music is marginal at best, and it's barely audible over the applause on some of the tracks. This is one of the few discs that I have that won't make it to my book. I have some stinkers, but this disc takes the cake.

The remainder of the tracks seem fairly acceptable. Some have a little bit of a thin sound, but are acceptable for general use. Fortunately, most of my singers wouldn't mind the quality of the songs, but I'll replace many of them over the next year.

For general use, the SGB aren't all that bad as far as music goes. However, the swipes being off is what gets under my skin the most. :x

Oh, and karaokemeister... You hit the nail on the head with the SGB23 disc. That engineer needs to be shought in the oss!!!

Thanks everyone.

I ended up buying two SGB disks. Im actually pleased overall. Some of the tracks are lame but the Zepplin and Pink Floyd tracks were worth the money.
I just bought Sound Choice Foundations 1 & 2 and bricks 1-5. From what I hear I will not be sorry.
Thanks again everyone.

I have the foundations and I haven't found a bad track yet. The SGB are ok as filler until I get them replaced w/ new stuff in the near future (Bricks, party paks, etc).

Most of the rock tracks are ok, but some of them have that stupid appluase track over the entire song or you hear mic noise and people counting off. Probably not noticable in a noisy club, but listening to them while I'm recording at home I not only notice - I get upset about the quality.

I would rate the overall quality a 6.5 out of 10 w/ some tracks being less than 0 and some an 8 or 9.

Every soundchoice disc I have is an 8 or better - with most being a 9 or 10. A few only rate lower because the lyrics are slow to appear or a different version than what I'm used to (uptempo, etc).

The quality of SGB is very hit and miss. They are cheap enough that I do have several and I'm actually surprised by the quality of some of the tracks. I have some SGB tracks that I prefer over my SC or CB.

In general you're going to find much better quality in other brands, but if you can afford to gamble a few bucks, I'd say they're worth the risk. One example would be the song "pour some sugar on me". I much prefer my SGB version of the song to any other I have.

In my latest show I had more of the SBG discs come up and I had a chance to review the quality again of some of the tracks against my Foundations, VCD's, DVD's, and other discs. If you're just starting out (I am) they're pretty good bang for the buck.

If you have the money, go for the higher end, and much better overall quality, but if you're starting and need 1000+ songs (66 discs) added to your book in a short period of time they offer a decent value. Even if you only end up using half the tracks you're only spending 20-30 cents per track (based on a typical selling price of $100-150 on eBay). If you use all of them you only dropped 10-15 cents per track. Compare that to the 56 cents per tracks I paid for Foundations 1 & 2 (and I got them pretty cheap! $500 for BOTH) and they don't look so bad any more... I look at custom discs that are $5 a track and most higher quality discs are $2-$3 a track which I don't think twice about buying.

Most of the complaints I have against SGB don't come across in a live show because of the crowd noise (like mic noise, people counting off, etc). I'll keep using them, but 23 is out, and a few other songs w/ the applause track through the ENTIRE song.

So my rating is a 8-9 on the bang for the buck scale, and a 6-7 in overall quality.
