I have a way with a lyric. Had one tune I co-wrote that was recorded by a folk singer and another for an online contest that was well received.
But I'm an old soul and it seems I can't find a good composer/arranger collaborator into old school sounds like me.
It's almost as if the zeitgeist musical muse responsible for all the ear candy of the 60s/70s/80s is gone forever in this generation.
I mean, I love karaoke. But singing cover songs can get old. And you get an itch to test your talent and creativity so songs are more personal.
Anybody out there have any experience with songwriting? Post your thoughts.
I'd like to think I'm not alone and would like to hear from you.

Had to edit this.
I too love to write songs, didn't start out "wanting" to, they just happened, and so I've grown to love it- ya know, writing my thoughts down & making up a melody to go with them. All would fall under the bluegrass/country genre of course. Everything I've written has been something I've felt. Either the lyrics are pretty close to something I've been through, or I get in a melancholy kinda mood and am depressed and sad words just pour out. Thing is- I'm good at lyrics, and catchy story lines- but lack the ability ususally to come up with an interesting tune to back them. I have done fair on a few, but then that melody I invented tries to follow to my new songs- I'm stuck at coming up with a totally new sound.
And my biggest problem- the types of songs I SING best and the types of songs I WRITE best are totally oposite. So go figure.
Was not "plugging" for anything in my "pre-edited" version here. I was just pointing out that I have had my songs (2 of them) reviewed by professionals in an online source. No one could go there and see or hear my stuff even if I wanted them to. My reviews were for my personal viewing only, they were not put up for the public. I can still go read them, nobody else can. My point in even mentioning it :::: I had an experience in having my songs reviewed, and I thought that is what you were asking us to talk about. I obviously can't share the website here in this post, but yes-they are out there for anyone to browse & find on the net.
You asked a question, I answered it. You did invite "anyone" to reply. I was under the impression you wanted to hear about anyone else who also enjoys songwriting.

By the way, I once plugged a song via an industry contest site called TONOS. The stuff that went on there, the in-fighting, poor and biased judgment and voting corruption, was ridiculous.
And I found that only R&B or foreign acts were winning. It was like a minority quota system. Needless to say, it went out of business. And not a moment too soon.
I'd post a link to a free site for connections, but this is not the place to be plugging things for pro wannabes. Karaoke is fun and should not be tainted by the professional music scene.
For those of us with aspirations, there are plenty of leads on the web if you search hard enough.

a great song writer friend of mine once told me, in writing a song...WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW ....HE ALSO SAID, forget everything you know r think you know about song writing and just write...it doesn't have to be verse, cho , verse cho.... most say mention the title of the song as often as u can in a song....he wrote a song that went # 1 and the title was only mentioned once in the song, and that was the last line....the song was...SHE EVEN WOKE ME UP TO SAY GOODBYE....jerry lee lewis recorded it...he wrote one song not sure it ever got recorded way to short...but it said so much....some of the words were.....I DON'T LOVE YOU...I DON'T LOVE YOU....I DON'T LOVE YOU...........SHE SAID.....when i first heard it i like most that heard it were thinking ok hes telling HER he doesn't love her , but that wasn't the case at all....those few words made the whole song....
Cult i really don't agree with ur motto...that professionals write songs....if you will look most songs written had co writers....not to say that they can't write a song on there on, but most don't....another reason for the co writeing is that....if you pitched a song, and they loved it...they willll try to change some of the lyrics....just to get there name on it so they to can recieve profits from it....part of the business... THE END

Long before I learned how to put the "little black dots" on paper, I was making up songs for guitar and voice. They are hard to put into any one category. Some are folk, some are rock, some pop, some country, some ballad, some are just downright weird.
I think when we make our own songs, the style just sort of evolves. I never set out to write a "rock" or a "country" tune, they just sort of take over in the process. I just finished a new song, and when I started it, it was this ballad, it's become more 70s rock style.
I write because I want to capture the thoughts and feelings of an incident. I share them because maybe somewhere out there is someone who's got just as many screws loose as meand can relate to the song.

I have NO interest in being a 45 year old Rock Star , that mess is for 15 year old youngerns to play with , I just enjoy singin' and playin' .pickin' and grinnin' no matter what genre it may be.I've been fortunate to play with some very talented people over the years a few grammy nominees , and one Grammy winner ,most are still good friends and we all get together and form several bands at once ,Trading musicians and singers in and out as the songs dictate...talk about funnnnn , and 0 pressure. I also enjoy spending time here sharing and listening on the showcase. there are some really good willed people here. I enjoy them all.
