ON ONE OF MY SUBS IT WAS MENTIONED THAT SOME DONT UNDERSTAND THE NECESSITY OF MIXING A SONG AS GOOD AS YOUR EQUIPMENT WILL ALLOW..

ONCE UPON A TIME..I DIDNT THINK THIS WAS A BIG DEAL EITHER...THEN AS I LISTENED TO OTHERS..I WANTED TO SOUND GOOD LIKE THEM..SOOOOO..I ASKED QUESTIONS..AND IM STILL ASKIN QUESTIONS .

A GREAT VOICE IS WONDERFUL..I HAVENT HEARD MANY ON HERE THAT DIDNT HAVE A GREAT VOICE..SO SOMETHIN NEEDS TO HELP THEM STAND OUT ABOVE THE CROWD...IN COMES MIXING...

A GOOD MIX MAKES YOU SOUND EVEN BETTER...MUCH BETTER...AND ITS SOMETHIN YOU CAN BURN...SHARE..GIVE AWAY...SEND AS DEMOS...ETC... ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN GOOD ENOUGH THAT THEIR WORK CAN BE USED AS DEMOS..AND SAVES THEM THOUSANDS ON STUDIO TIME...

WHATS A GOOD MIX? TO ME A NICE CLEAR ONE..NOT PERFECT..BUT THE TONES ARENT HARSH TO THE HEAD..STUFFED INTO THE HEADSET..AND THE POPS AND HISSES AND HUMMS ARE KEPT TO A MINIMUM...I MEAN A MIC CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH?

WHEN IT COMES TO RANKING ...A SONG WITH A GOOD MIX IS EASIER TO RANK ON THE VOCAL ABILITY..IF YOU CANT HEAR THE VOCALS..THEN HOW CAN U REALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ASSESS THEM? I THINK VOCALS SHOULD BE THE FOREMOST ...REALLY FOREMOST THING THAT WE RANK..HOWEVER...IF WE DID THAT..EVERYONE WOULD HAVE 10S AND 9'S ...BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG...

I HAVE A GOOD VOICE..BUT IM NOT A TEN OR A NINE..OR SOMETIMES EVEN AN 8....SOMETIMES ...

WHEN U RANK ON VOCAL STRENGTH...TIMING EMOTION ORIGINALITY PITCH... THEN THERE ARE ABOUT 90 PERCENT HERE WOULD ALWAYS BE PERFECT TENS...SO WHATS LEFT TO SET THEM APART?

I DONT THINK ANYONE SHOULD MAKE THE MIXING A HUGE PART OF THE RANKIN..ME..I ONLY TAKE OFF ONE POINT FOR A BAD MIX...A BAD MIX..SOME BAD PITCHES ..ETC 2 POINTS... A GOOD MIX..ALOT OF PITCH OR TIMING PROBLEMS 1 POINT...A FAIR MIX AND LOTS OF PITCH..TIME...LACKS EMOTION...I MITE TAKE OF 3 BUT IVE RARELY EVER GIVEN A 7..AND I HAVE TO SAY ON THIS SITE IVE RARELY HEARD ANYTHING THAT WOULD DESRVE A 7

DOES ANY OF THAT MAKE THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF SENSE?

I don't consider myself a good judge of mixing abilities, but I do agree a good mix matters. The better the mix the better you are going to sound. It's that simple. A good singer can sing fairly well even with a sub-standard mix but a bad singer can sound decent with a good mix. It's easier to judge the qualityof the actual singer if the mix is good.

I also at one time didn't know the importance of the mix. I used to go to clubs and even started hosting without understanding the dynamics of the equipment. Believe me the first time you sing on a stage with a good mix you understand the importance. it's the difference in seeing in black and white then suddenly seeing color for the first time.

Mixing does matter, but should not be the key factor on the SS. When I comment on a sub, especially the mix, I do not take that into account when ranking. The reason for commenting on the mix is to tell the people where they can improve. A good mix does make it sound better on the ear when you listen to the sub. And, seeing that most people use CEP, it's easy to remove the snap, crackle and pops, as well as the hiss in the beginning of the song (white noise)

Kass, Wannabe.. Anything at a 6 or below should be considered a "Revenge Ranking" incident or a really bad sub. I know the value of a good mix and top equipment. For you Kass Really nobody should be forced to "Pay" to go to a studio for a demo, unless of course it's the licensing fees for the tracks, when I'd be happy to do the engineering & studio time for FREE!!! for you Kass *** materials and mastertrack licensing fees not included.

Because if Somebody is slamming a mix... I wanna hear it. and I can varify it, and pretty much tell ya within a couple of things where it possibly went wrong. You are one of the nicest ppl here and I think it's really wrong for that to happen.

Kass, It's time to invest in an AT "Artist Elite" Model AE 6100 Dynamic microphone they run about $300.00 US. That will fix the nay sayers. It's on the line with one of the best live dynamics out there.

It's not worth the money to buy a studio mic for you. Unless you do it commercially. Stay away from that mess.

i to agree a mix can make r break a song, if all else is equal...other then useing a little compression sometimes, and a little E Q if needed thats about all i do....i'll learn all that fancy stuff oneday/someday....i can't hear highs at all so no need to use the dessser, most stuff i can't hear, that why i depend on ya'll so much to point things out to me....and Kathy ur mix is great and so r ur vocals.....you have been taught well....

Kathy does a great job at it was my point. I was waiting for someone besides myself to make it.. Thanks OK!! The whole deal is that there are a few Jealous ones out there who don't play in the "sandbox" Fair, and tend to throw a shovel full of sand even with hidden rankings. Karma will have it way with them too.

Hopefully the Webguru catches on to this and does a little "Voodoo" of his own.

I still think the new system I proposed will hopefully help straighten the rankings out some, if not quite a bit.

i think u misunderstand..i dont think i have a tru revenge rating on mine..cuz nothin i ve gotten is under an 8.

but ..in my opinion the mix is important....one thing i didnt mention is..my vocals werent always what they are now..recording..mixing..all that has helped me also learn so much about my voice what it can do and cant a nd how to work with what i have

none of this do i do cuz i think i will be standin on the opry stage.i do it as a hobb y cuz it makes me feel good about ME..just like crochetin..i want those stitches better and better..or writing ..i want the story told in a pretty way..not techie way..etc..

ty im runnin to bums to get myself recordded too sweet really and if i could i would buy a mic like that..but...it really doesnt fit my budget. ..a friend from here sent me an awesome ole pioneer mic..that works since i got me a new sound card soooo im doin good..comin up in the world

i only think it should be included in the rankins simply cuz it make a difference in what you hear.. ..and cuz yes its a singin site..but its a singing site..online..thus recording is the necessary evil..so..doin it the best u can would be important..but i would never take off more than one point in reference with anything to do with mixing...any others would all be vocal presentation..


maybe....there could be a critique category..and those be the only ones that get honest..tru..actual critiques... poor phil...we ask so much of u as it is

Another thing .. Studio pop screens are the best investment you can make.. not those foam jobbies either.. I'm talking about a device you almost have to get from a place like musician's friend or a real audio or recording retailer. They clamp or thread on the mic stand and sit in front the mic and have a nylon or fabric filter so your p's & b's don't pop the mic.. it really helps clear up the audio. They are about 5"-6" in diameter.

I use them in EVERY session and can run my audio more flat and helps the vocals cut better. This also reduces the amount of plug-ins needed in mixing and mastering.

i read where u can make one with a clothes hanger and ladies stockings..just aint done it yet good tip though!

if ya do it that make 4 layers of it. 2 seems to be not effective for some. It just don't compare to the professional ones and some do it through a cross stitching hoop. OH, And........

BTW - buy a "Fresh" set of nylons too if you do it.... !

Since we were discussing Pop filters for recording...
I was just in My retailer this morning.. and those pop screens (proco 5") are about $20.00 usd Retail and they clamp on to a boom stand or thread on to any mic stand if ya toss the gooseneck clamp away. They are inexpensive but effective.

I listened to the 10th show of "That's Karaoke" they couild have used a couple too..

I totally agree that the quality of the mix can really improve the quality of the song. I like a mix where the vocals are set in place as if they were a part of the orchestration, blended as if they were another instrument flowing harmoniously with the piece. But, for some reason, every time I mix my vocals in Im told they are not loud enough. They sound fine to me but others want them brought out more. I think it may have to do with the fact that I am new to hearing my recorded voice and maybe a little shy. What suggestions can you guys offer me on this point?

You know what I do? Everytime I am in the car,I turn on the radio and I listen to the mixes of whatever is playing.I dont even really hear the song,but rather Im disecting the mix of everything.Listening to the volumes on instruments,and vocals.Thats whats helped me alot.I listen as close as I can to how much verb goes into the new stuff on the radio too.Once I started listening very close for the verb,I heard it in the new songs that are released now.If Ive got "back-up"singers in the track I'm working with,I try and put myself slightly above them,so that I am 'forward".I dont want to blend in with them. Thats pretty much how I adjust mine. If Im using effects...I look at it this way.....'dry' is forward up front.....'wet' is away. I am sure everyone has their opinions on that,but those are mine. Try bringing up your vocals a bit,see what kind of responses you get.Mainly,you just want to be sure that your words are loud enough to be heard clearly. Im just a novice at mixing, I am sure I have loads to learn,I will say I am so glad that there are so many programs on the market now that give us so many recording abilities. Ok,enough rambling from me.. Don't know If I was helpful or not.
