I've just invested about $1500 in CDG's. I'm wary about using my original discs and would like to make a "working set" and keep the originals stored away. What software and hardware do I need? Better yet, is there any company out there that will replace damages original discs at a nominal fee (this would save me the cost and trouble of having to make a working set).

Buy a Plextor CDR or DVDR burner, or any burner capable of reading and writing CDGs. Then use CDRWIN to extract the tracks as CDG and burn them.
Good luck.

Just bought a stand alone duplicator from Guitar center for 230.00 bucks. Works like a dream takes about 9 min. to write, read and burn. Handles cdg, vcd, cdr,cdrw...... everthing but dvd. They play in all my different players EXCEPT for my Hitachi 6 banger plus one. I havent a clue why this player wont read them correctly.

Thanks for the advice. The stand alone unit sounds simple. What brand is it? Is there a generic term for such devices?

With about 1200 cds sitting here let me get you started right. The best way to back up cds is on the hard drive (0ne karaoke cd takes about 150mb). All plextor drives read and burn cds and with Cdr Win you can rip each cd into it's folder ex Sc8862> They will be bin files with whatever name you gave them and numbered sequentialy. In this form the folder is 600 -700 mb. With something like Mp3+G Toolz you can batch convert from bin to zip and choose option delete old files. When converting anything to mp3 pay attention to the compression ratio With Toolz play back the mp3 in winamp and you will see that it is playing back at 320 bpm. 120 and up will work.. Then if you need a cd just zip to bin and burn.
Slow speeds burn deeper so to speak if you have trouble with graphics on your player.
Then the only cds I would burn are ones that you play on a regular basis.
This is just one method out of many and it is time consuming.Very...
All this has been proven legal in the courts under the fair use act.

Can you cite ANY cases in which a 1:1 backup of a CDG was found to be proven legal for commercial use? The Fair Use clause allows backups of personal music for non-commercial - private use only. If you know of the cases, please list them & where we can go to read the info for ourselves. Thanks!

This is the best url or one of the best I have found yet..[/url]
Market Effect: Copying a Karaoke CDG for backup purposes or for ease of use will have relatively little effect on the market for or value of the copyrighted work on that CDG. First, it is unlikely that a backup copy is going to create an incentive for a consumer to buy fewer of the original works, except to the extent that they might require a second copy for backup, or replacement purposes. That market is already denigrated for digital media, as discussed above. The alternative reason for copying, to change the medium in which the copyrighted work is stored, can even encourage investing in the first copy and so can have an overall positive market effect on the market for the copyrighted works. In addition, the AHRA's express permission for non-commercial copying of digital media argues that copying for format change is squarely in the center of the fair use zone for CDGs as well. The 9 th Circuit Court of Appeals reiterated this core tenet of the AHRA and fair use law in RIAA v. Diamond Multimedia as it expressly upheld the legality of digital music players, as enabling “paradigmatic non-commercial personal use”. [6]

and that's all for non-commercial use...
Something that the manufacturers have openly agreed on! You ask them... and they'll tell you the "fair use act" says for personal home use, you can do it.
Now, I personally think for COMMERCIAL it's fine too, as long as your original is not in use elsewhere... in other words, where the copy isn't making money for you the same time the original is. And rumors abound about how SC has lost a couple of court cases involved in just these lines, but I have yet to find one single case to substantiate it.

Yes I agree with you Matt. I've spent hours in google looking to find something substantial I've even done searches on news paper sites trying to verify a rumor and never did find anything. Not so much for the legalities but I remember when a man or woman either one could work 40 hours/week in this country and support a big family. Ive got a gal (singer)that's got a masters degree in teaching, is single and cant support herself and one son. It sort of P*****es me off. When singers can go on a tour for 6 months and make 6 million dollars and insult my commander in chief I am not on their side one bit.But that's something else.. I've had to get a tin beak and go out and pick Sh**t with the rest of the chickens too and I will support the honest working people forever Better get off my box. One time Truman during a campaign crawled up on a manure spredder and said "This is the first time I ever had a chance to talk on a republican platform...

Not that I want to hijack your thread here, but singers usually do not make as much money as most people think. When selling their CDs the record company takes most of the money and tosses a couple of coins back to the band/singers. Most of the money is made on tours/concerts/promotions/commericals for the artist. I dont remember exactly, but I read something along the lines with that(lets take your $6 million example)..after all the expenses/taxes/middle hands etc..the singer gets maybe $1.2mill out of this and then the singer(who would probably be famous and have TONS of stalkers and crap) has living expenses for security and the way of living like normal people do not have.

All of my stalkers gave up and all my groupies got too old to mess with so I don't have those problems anymore. But I did have a gal put a loaded 357 on the bar and say she was gonna shoot me if I didnt sing Ghost Riders in The Sky.... I think she got 86'd shortly thereafter..

I've followed Karyoker's approach and am using a hard drive back up. I really appreciate how helpful everyone at Karaoke Forum has been. As a newbie to Karaoke it's really been helpful.
As for Knightshow's question regarding fair use... I'm an IP attorney. To my knowledge there is no case on point. However, I believe courts probably would come down on the side of fair use when it comes to the practice of making backup CDG's even for commercial use. 17 USC s107 (the Copyright Act) deals with fair use. It is NOT limited to noncommercial use. However, whether the use is commercial or private is one of the four factors mentioned. Most courts generally find that if you've paid once, it's sufficient. Hope that helps.

yeah, and that's the angle I intend to follow... IF I'm ever questioned.
SC and many of the other sites may complain about what I'm doing (running off backups with my permament library safe), but they DO know I continually buy new cdgs!! !
