Personally I think it would think it would entertaining to see if they could hit something they have never done before.. you'll never know.. I have seen it done both myself as a KJ and with other KJ's and i have been pleasently suprized and seen some real trainwrecks too. so it can go both ways.. I have also destroyed some songs doing it.. but it sure is fun to try..

Anybody ever tried my favorite Karaoke Game.. "kamakazi Karaoke"

I've played that, but only in my infancy of my karaoke apprenticiship. My biggest problem I've got now is, I barely want to hear some of the singers BARELY singing their one or two songs... I definately don't want to hear them sing something they can't sing at all!!!!

Matt

I know a KJ in Detroit that does a variation of kamakazi. She makes it optional during a rotation. She has the audience pick a number at random (between such and such) which would be the disk number and then a second number which would be the track number. She starts the round by going first. The folks that go to her shows enjoy it. I always played.

Matt -

 You're getting jaded. :)

So I tried some new songs last night. I didn't know that I could sing some of these songs. I sang:

Faithfully
What this world needs is a few more rednecks(it took the place of Redneck Woman great)
Jack and Diane
Come to my window
Give me one reason
The Ketchup Song
A little less Conversation
Unbreak my heart

As for the kamikaze Karaoke, we tried that before it was happy, but it was only a one time thing. My manager didn't think it went over with the crowd to well.

Thanks for your help Everyone.

I'm not jaded, but realistic.

It's different if they want to try a new song... but I have a bar of 80% NON-Singers, and they get pretty finickiy...

I will often try new songs, without practicing them at home... doesn't bother me. A few other people are the same way. MOST of the people who go to karaoke, aren't quite so brave. This is THEIR time to have fun. With all their options and all my competition, I will not risk alienating people because I might make them uncomfortable or pressured into trying songs they've never heard of, or flat out don't want to sing.

I've done my time in kamikazee karaoke. It's silly, and infantile. I much prefer to take karaoke more seriously. Sorry if that is offensive to some, but it IS my opinion. Your own mileage and experience may vary.

Matt

I have also tried the kamikazee Karaoke and I agree it can be fun in the right setting...... like smaller crowds and private parties. I prefer the karaoke challange idea that Da Butcha mentioned. My husband and I find a lot of songs that way that we would probably never try. I think it works better because we know each others limitations and try to find songs that fit into that range for each other. It doesn't always work but sometimes you find something you never would have considered and you keep doing it because it turns out good. We still try to challenge each others abilities and that's what makes it fun.

kj_island, Maybe you should go to your friends and family and ask them if they can make some new requests.

I think a big problem is that the people making the requests want to hear you sing a certain song and you don't want to let them down. I would get requests for certain songs every night and I would do them over an over out of obligation even though I wanted to do other stuff. I started telling them that I had another request before theirs and I would try to fit theirs in later. I don't like to lie but sometimes it's easier than hurting someones feelings by telling them you're sick of singing their song.

Actually sometimes honestly time don't allow the KJ to sing..

Wannabe is actually got a point.. and this may be the point or excuse ya may need to use.

Usually I'm extremely honest, but if ya need a "Back Door" to get out of this one.. this may be it.
