Ok, I need some advice.
We are being recruited to be the karaoke hosts for the American Idol contest in our city. Yeah, it's the one where the people then move onto bigger contests, trying to get to the network TV show.
Now, for me, I hate doing contests of any type. If you really take pride in what you do as a karaoke host, it creates alot of additional stress not to make any mistakes. Kind of takes the fun out of it for me.
Yeah, our system sounds really good. We've been told we run the best show around, but is it really worth getting yourself into a situation like that?
Besides, my area is really cheap when it comes to this business, and they probably wouldn't pay me what we'd want anyway.
They are telling us that we'd get TV exposure 75 times a week on the local Fox network, etc. Frankly, it's exposure we don't really need. We can book just about anywhere we want already.
Someone straighten me out here. What do we really have to gain by doing this?

Well if it isn't you, then it will be one of your undercutting competitors
Do what you feel is the correct thing. I probably would do it as we generally get into bigger contests like that & we don't lose business or customers. The TV ads alone would be nice - whether you need it or not. i'd rather see an ad for my clubs, rather than a competitors club personally. It most likely won't hurt your business as most of the people that come for it are only coming for the contest & when it's all done, you are back to your regs - with maybe a new face or 2.

The contest is at a local club that's been trying to book us for 3 months. It's not one of our regular gigs. Besides, he's probably only going to want to pay $200 for 5 hours. At that rate, one of our undercutting competitors can have it. And, the bar owner that's shelling out $1500 a week on advertising for this, and dealing with the Local Fox station and the Americal Idol folks can explain to them why he hired a cheesy operation to handle this responsibility.
With my luck, I'd probably be the sound guy that screwed up the next "Ruben Studdard's" chance to be the next American Idol or something.
$400 a gig sounds more like it to me for that. It's for 4 weeks.

If they are advertising with your companies name as well, then it would be worth it, if not, then I would pass. $200 per 4 hours is a little more than standard up here, $150 is average - anything over $200 per 4 hrs in any club here is virtually unheard of.

TYM & Others...
HEADS UP... AMERICAN IDOL (The TV SHOW) is an OPEN AUDITION!!!! Go to FOX's Website for more Details!!! Please do not jepordise your singer count Or your Business over a competition. I know of several of these going on. Please be careful with this.
I'd rather fill the bar and have everybody sing and draw someone From the song slips to go audition instead of having them compete for it..
Best of luck!

To the best of my knowledge, AI doesn't run auditons at karaoke shows. Singers go to one of several cities to audition. Now...there are many promotional companies that capitolize on the AI name and add it to their contest names. Even a local radio station did an "American Idol" karaoke contest at my karaoke show....but it didn't get a singer onto AI. Double check with the contest promoters...I can almost guarantee they are using the AI name with absolutely no chance that the singers will ever make it to the AI shos.
Just my educated guess.....

Blonde KJ,
That is exactly my thought.. I'm betting that is Tym e-mails the producers of AI / Fox Networks they will denounce the competition.

Nice guess, but wrong. It was the Fox Network that approached us about it. Fox is sponsoring the event, as it is one of the initial auditions for next season's show. (They have them in many cities)
They had one in my city 2 years ago, and the gal that won here made it onto the TV show American Idol.
So, Fox didn't denounce the show..................
I shot them a high price, because I didn't want to do it, and haven't heard back. Mission accomplished, I hope.
Did you know that none of the local judges can look like, sound like, or act like Simon? , the rules are funny.

Think about it though, all American Idol is, is one big karaoke contest. Makes complete and total sense to me that they would use karaoke, especially at the early stages to sort out talent. Then it goes right back to Karaoke for the finals on TV (only without the lyrics in front of them).
I prefer to remain "under the radar", and have fun doing this. If I had a big production company, it would be great for publicity, but we have enough gigs, and don't really need anymore at this point.

Tym,
personally The "Under the Radar" approach is my type of situation I'd rather have in this situation.
