Hi, everyone, I was at a wedding yesterday, and the groom had rented some gear, and was playing songs from a playlist that he said he had put together from ITunes. He had selected the songs, and put them in the order he chose. He also was running a slide show at the same time using Adobe. Ok, so my question is where, and how does everyone obtain their DJ music, (if you use any), and how does it work, as far as paying for songs, do you pay a subscription fee, then for each song, Are there certain sites I should stay away from, are downloads legal, any education on this subject would be helpful.

Sidenote for Compuhost Users: Could I do something like I described above using filler tunes along with video bits running at the same time?

I get my music from second hand CD shops and rummage sales. In fact, I just picked up a barely used CD of "The Essential Eartha Kitt" for 50 cents yesterday and a Carl Perkins CD of greatest hits for a buck. I also got a box of free jewel cases for parts to fix my broken ones. I rarely buy new anymore unless I just have to have it or need it for a gig.


The groom rented some equipment? And selected some iTunes stuff? That had to suck. How does anyone do the usual wedding schlock like garter tosses and such. Oh, just saw it was in Wisconsin...we are the epitome of cheap!

I have a years subscription to XMIX Radioactive top & R&B. Once that runs out I will be purchasing original discs, there is a store here that sells burnt copies of the discs, from a reputable shop.

I already know about buying discs from stores, I also thought about buying from places like TIME LIFE, etc., but was just interested in the type of internet places where I could look at a playlist, pick what I want, and then have custom discs made, or download. Just like with karaoke music, why pay for 15 songs, only to get 3 that you REALLY want. So I guess I should have made myself more clear, sorry.

Lordy, the equipment he rented was as you thought, and it wasn't too cheap either. I am friends with the bride, and would have done it for free, but it was outside, in a park (Greenfield Park), and I didn't even know they were going to have DJ music.
Oh well.

Sure. Just configure a slide show using one of your videobits buttons and load the fillertunes player with the songs you wish to play. Launch the fiilertunes player in autoplay mode and start your slideshow. There you have it!

I've used "Promo Only" since the mid 90's but I would not suggest a subscription service unless you plan on doing alot of DJing where you need current music. The mobile beat top 200 song list is a good start. You can buy used CDs really cheap these days so start with the standards like motown,disco,rock compilations. Itunes may be your best option for new music, I just prefer having a hard copy for everything.

I will buy cds on sale if I want them and they are on major sale, but lately I have been purchasing individual songs from a subscription service. I pay a subscription to put them on my mp3 player, but I can buy songs for like $1.00 a piece to play as dj music. It saves me from having to pay for 12 songs I don't need. I use Rhapsody.com or iTunes, but I pay for the mp3 version. It works great for me.

Nowdays I simply have a touch screen on my computer sysytem and have it set to mp3gmusxx,com and if the want karaoke or dance music or video they can check it out right there. If they have an account set up they can down load it right there. If they just want one song they can see how much it will cost and I will charge them for that song. I keep the invoice of course and the music but they can have what they want right now.

As most people know still i'm still on disc, so i tend to use a lot of mastermix xd's from ukdj.com

Sadly there are no CD shops in my area, so for the latest releases, I tend to wait till they are released by ukdj.com. . . occasionly I buy the latest Now album online from who ever is cheapest. . . but I do tend to spend two months of the year without the current chart music. In a real emergancy my partner downloads it onto his iphone, and we plug it into the mixing desk directly.

If I happen to walk past a charity shop, car boot sale, or a secondhand shop, I also tend to spend every last penny on second hand cd's. My last few gems, include the Streets album, Vengaboys, Louis Artmstrong and Greatest hits of Will Smith. . .

Rosario, I have been getting my DJ music from Promo Only as well for the last 19 or so years and have nearly every discs they've put out.

For my older stuff i bought the Time Life Platinum Series many yera ago which has 450 great all time songs, but it was only available for purchase in the UK after they lost their licenses on a few songs.

Promo Only also had available for a time their Essentails Collection 450 which was similar to the Platinum collection but with newer songs added.

Anything new now i either get it on Itunes at .99 or the NOW discs when they come out in wallyworld for like $14.

TARGET has great compilation discs for like $5.88 per discs, in pretty much every genre. Good Luck!

I now sorry.... SERIOUSLY - Initial regular music was just taken from personal CD collections - Mine / Wifes / Sisters / etc.
I assume ( and tell me if I'm wrong) --As long as SOMEONE had the original cd I could have ripped it to my drive???...even If I didn't own it per se ??????

Discs for DJ music???? I download music 1 track at a time by request for .99 each. or stream the song if I don't want to buy it from Napster. My subscription costs me $15 every 3 months which allows for streaming, and tracks are usually .99 ea.

I had a significant disc collection when I started, including some time life stuff, and the "oldies but goodies" series. I spend about $20 a month on new tracks.

Boy am I going to get some flack from this but there are DJ sites where the artists provide downloads of their new releases before the cd's are even released. The major DJ'S are playing and have remixed before the general public have heard them,

4 or 5 years ago when people wanted me to do parties they wamted DJ also. I Started hitting every hock shop, thrift store and Sally's. I was finding used cd's in folders of 100 or more. Some were scratched and not usable but I went thru the process of ripping again. I also take advantage of free trial download specials.

It took years but I have the top 150 from '58 to 2000 and rely upon requests for this century. Gawd its hard to believe this decade is over. I rarely buy cd's but use downloads.

Rhapsody or Napster, 0.99 to 1.29 each, pay ONLY for what you want, and get the very latest that way. Use Napster's Billboard option to check out the top 20 quarterly for each year from 1950-something. (I used this to create a "memories" disc for a 50th anniversary party we did - made them a CD with 20 songs on it that they took on a road trip. She called me personally to thank me for that one.)I also hound the second hand stores and yard sales, and pawn shops will often put CDs on sale for a great price. Of course the time it takes to go through them can be substantial. I have BOXES of CDs that have been ripped to one of three computer hard drives. I don't use any subscription services, and seldom do I pay full price for a cd full of music that I won't use (unless it is the "best of.")

Because of our extensive DJ collection, I seldom have to put out more than $25 or so for a new gig if they want specialty - I don't carry a lot of country so usually that's what I'm picking up, but if you do a gig like that every six mos, it's just a matter of filling in.

I buy DJ music from Amazon.com's MP3 site or WalMart.com MP3 site. Tracks usually cost .79-.99, and I usually buy about 8-10 songs every 3 months to keep my library up to date. That's about a $40.00 a year investment to have a good DJ library (after about a $200.00 start-up cost).

MY DJ playlists for weddings has about 300 songs, which is WAYYYY more than enough. If someone requests a song that I don't have, then it is probably a song that is BADDD for the party anyway. If a bride or groom request a song I don't have for the reception, I go buy it. Easy enough!!

Think I might get in trouble now.
For years now I have been advertising for and buying damaged records, tapes and CD's.
I get them very cheap. I dont even try ripping them.

As far as I am concerned I have the origonal.
I am allowed to have the music.
Therefore I download the music which just happens to be better quality than I would have had ripping from a cracked record.

Do you see that as a problem.
And go easy on me...Please...
