Looking to purchase new speakers for my Karaoke business and would like to know what is considered better JBL eon or b52 matrix 1000 active? Not to fimilar with ethier one. I currently use a mackey 1202 mixer and was looking for the best sounding (vocal and music) and lightest speakers or speaker systems available even if its something other than the 2 mention above. Thanks for your help.

If you want active speakers, i'd personally go with the JBL EON G2 series over the B-52's. Some like the others. Go with your ear & what sounds better to you since you are the one that will have to work with them.

Check out the Mackie SRM450's while you're at it.

I do agree with Lonman, we use the JBL EON G2's and are very satisfied with the sound but........demo them both and decide for yourself.

I put my vote in for the JBL's also. I've been using my g2's both the 15 and 10" versions for about 2 years now and still love the sound.

Would it be better to go with passive or active speakers? I currently have a crown amp but if the active speaker gives me a better sound and makes setting up easier I'm all for that. If you suggest a passive speaker what would you recommend as being the best for Karaoke? Thanks

I prefer the active speakers, then I don't have to carry heavy power amps around in my flight case. Of course, the speaker cabinet (active) is heavier then the passive.

With active speakers you need power to all speakers, with the advantage that with e.g. the JBL's, you have a matched speaker/amp configuration.

What model Crown amp do you have?

There are advantages & disadvantages to powered speakers just like there are with separate components.

Main advantage is weight is usually lighter, the components are generally matched for the amp & enclosure, if you blow a speaker you can limp by with the other for the rest of the evening, use standard mic cables for the signal.
Disadvantages are, you can't add higher wattage amps (you would need more powered speakers), you need to find power outlets for each speaker, if you blow a speaker/internal amp, you are out until it get replaced.

Components
Advantages generally sound better, can use multi amp/crossover configurations, if you want more speakers you get them & hook them up to the exisiting amp (cheaper), if youblow a speaker you can limp by on the other for the evening, if you blow a channel of an amp you can hook the speakers to the working side & continue for the evening.
Disadvantages are weight, bulkier, speaker cord runs should be kept as short as possible.

No no, active speakers sound great, don't get me wrong. I was stating that they are limited to what they can do as opposed to separate components. It is true the right components with passive speakers can & generally will sound better, but it will cost you at the same time - there are just more configurations & routing options you can do with separates. The JBL EON G2 series is still a decent speaker. Also look at the Mackie SRM450, I like this one better personally, but then that's just what I prefer.

if ya have an amplifier already.. try to match it up to that..

JBL right now seems to be the hottest thing going.

I just heard a DJ with a NEW Peavey SP-5 and it sounded horrible.

My former partner rented him a pair of JBL MR series 2 ways, and it blew them out of the water.

The choice is yours.. quality costs money, but remember you get what you pay for.

What model Crown amp do you have?

Sorry Loman just got back to checking reply's thanks for the advice. I use a Crown Power Base 2 amp and right now I have it matched with to different speakers a EV T52 2-way and a JBL TR series they have seen better days. I'm sure this isn't giving me a quality sound.

QUESTIONS?

1) Would it be better to just go with passive speakers with this amp, if so what speakers are a good match?

2) Would it be better to invest in active speakers?

List of what I have on top of what I mentioned above:

Mackie 1202 12-channel mixer

Lexicon digital processor

CD+G Carrousel

Here are the Specs on the PB2 (legacy Series) from Crown Audio.. It definately is no longer made anymore by them. But lots of parts are available, as I just replaced a power supply for one a few weeks ago.

8 ohm Stereo.... 320 watts/side

4 ohm Stereo.... 400 watts/side

8 ohm Bridged Mono 965 watts total

(This amp could easily run a club series JBL or Yahama safely at the above loads.)

I definately would have your retailer double check my figures with thier reference guides. as the the above manufacturers may have changed speaker loads.

I use JBL Eons both 1st gen and g2's Also use Eon10 g2's for stage monitors I ran a boat club gig last year all aft into the night direct sun 98deg+ Outside you are cranked full on power They didnt even reduce in volume due to heat Also I was set up directly below the WWV towers along a stretch of road that the broadcast freq's kill vehicles with computerized ignitions. Was the first karaoke setup that didnt get bleed over... Secret U can run balanced audio to the speakers Powered speakers are almost impossible to blow I have seen jbl eons with the case busted like they been run over by a truck and still putting out the best sound ever. Jbl speakers are American made I have full set of schematics and stock numbers for component parts availible from jblproservices.com They are not made so you can't rerpair them..The customer service from Jbl is the best in the world ..Jbl (formerly Altec Lansing Hollywood audio for years) has established industry standards for years and still is the flagship for permanent or portable systems.

After saying all that whatever works works but those are my recommendations

Been there And done that one too.. it's a tough scenario.. glad to know about the fix.

I do alot of Live Audio around Col, AZ, and NM, Glad to hear of someone's success. One of the KJ's I hired From Col. Springs tried FBT's and failed last year.

Ya I'm in Greeley now but we still have a farm West of Wellington north of lake #5 Yup I sort of like Jbl Eons I should have said jblproservice not services for support, One other comment instead of adding power standard procedure is adding speakers and placing them for proper fill with minimum power alley

I do alot of mods and speaker and driver replacement to passive/active MR, SR, SRX, As well as Line Array Pro Gear. There are several end users here that do not use the factory mods. and I do alot of passive to active system conversion. (in older models) by factory schematics. (when not engineering) There is not a big call for it. Most will just replace the amps and speakers. My home studio now has JBL Studio Speakers. I have liked thier sound and is an audio industry standard.
