I'm new..but I'm not. I joined a while back but was busy with another site and did not do much submitting. Now that I want to submit I notice there is an option to be rated or not be rated.....

I also noticed that most people have ten's. My understanding is I want to be rated...fairly of course...and I really want even more...a critique that tells me what I need to work on. ..I do not even envision myself as a perfect ten submitter at any time. I can only think of one person I have ever known online that submits a near perfect song each time... Is this the same for everyone that leaves the option to be rated. I am not here to tick people off. I will rank any song fairly as I hear it. I am not new to this, and I do have an inkling what I am talking about or I will tell you that I have no clue how you can fix it.

My current understanding of the 1-10 system is a 5 would be average and anything above would be above average..and vice versa...so..can I please have people's thought's on this so that I dont go around stepping on toes?

I have already heard some great talent here and I am lookin forward to hearing more. :)

Oh boy... here we go again. The whole "honest ranks and comments" discussion gets A LOT of mileage on here.

From the sounds of your post (above), you have a pretty good feel for the 'lay of the land'. My humble advice is that you should rate like you want to... and in a way you can feel good about.

If you want honest feedback (i.e., useful critiques) just ask: most seem to be willing to do so when they know its wanted. As for honest ranks, I think this site is a lot like "..whose line..". And I mean that in the best way.

Yeah, that is a way used & abused subject on here, I've noticed. I've gave my 2 cents on it, and even had someone get angry in reply. Might as well be talking politics the way that subject can cause a stir. :?
I think everyone should be as honest as possible, in a decent sort of way, without causing anyone any mental anguish.
I've tried to be more bluntly honest lately, but I just can't be a rude a** on here. I am by no means a pro when it comes to recording, or anything else, so I just don't go there.
So ......if I like a version of a song, I comment. And I don't get to hear most of them, they are posted so fast.
I've had people tell me things I need to change, and I usually just listen to their subs to see if they sound like "someone who knows what they're talking about." In some cases, they do not. In other cases, they do. I have never minded any comments myself, though I've discarded a few as being worthless.
I mean, if someone sings off key, but tells me I am off, I don't consider them worthy of judging.
I would say keep on being yourself. Be honest, if you step on any toes in here someone will be sure to yap back at ya.
I'd say the 1-10 thing you mentioned sounds fair. Anything above a 5 should be considered above average.
I have just made the decision to not let any more of my stuff be ranked at all, I don't want someone feeling obligated to give me 10's because that's what I gave them. But I still want comments. I like to know what everyone thinks. But this is all in fun for me. I think some take it a little more seriously than that, but not me.
And, one person may love a song (or singers voice), while the next person to come along may hate it. So, go figure.
Okay, this was more more than 2 cents worth (of web space anyhow)
I would say to have fun, & be honest with people, if that's what you wanna do.

I have a good feel for those who like to be rated fairly and those who don't... Just tell me in a "Nice" way if you wish Not to be rated fairly. and you won't recieve a rating at all. as I believe I have a vast knowlege of the music industry that most don't have here and keep quite close tabs on it as an Engineer. And at this time I don't wish to turn anybody into a "Star". Just would like to help out my peers here a little bit.

If you wish to seek information on my background or my advice on anything please feel free to personal message (PM) me.

BTW I sing mostly for fun here online too...

Kass..
You brought up a thought that I need to convey.. There is not a person here that doesn't have something to work on.. Professional or Amatuer...

Note to the Starlets:
I felt that this is a point I needed to make... I have said this before and I will say it again. Nobody is perfect in pitch, nobody here is going to be signed into contract tomorrow by Epic Records, Dreamworks, Sony or EMI Group. So if you truely believe that you are, Why are you really here?

I have taken an Inventory of the Actual number (Honestly) of Karaoke singers who have made it into the indusrty. (with some help of some credible industry people in LA & New york) And have made it out of "Development deals" and ya know what the numbers are very disapointing. Even I didn't make it out of Artist development. and I have songs still out on XM. (quite amazing huh?)

I'm doing worlds better as a Songwriter and Engineer, Than a singer.

Karaoke was always meant for fun.. I would rather support someone who does it for fun, Than someone who has not thought about the possiblities through of losing it all on a roll through through the industry. Unless they are "ALL THAT" There not that many "ALL THAT's" here. Maybe 1 or 2. :read: And I'll take that one to the bank.

Hi Kass: I admire your good intentions and your talent. I thought I would refer you to Topic "Some good, some bad, some.....
and Topic "Do you want my honest opinion?"
I believe that will help you understand better the atmosphere regarding your concerns. :)

Hey Kass hon..

Thought i'd toss my hat in here also.....seeing as I'm actually submitting now and not just a watcher lol

I've been on Karaoke Scene in the KJ forums for over a year...not quite as frequently as i'd like....but i'm here now and HOWDY hon lol

I've read up on the forums about the general mindset of people here..the good the bad and the ugly lol which is why I'll just say...I love to sing, that's why I submit. I'm not "all that" but I try my dangdest and am always open to critique and you can put a number on me if you'd like... :)

But the main reason I sing is because it's like breathing to me..it's my passion..if I don't do it, I'm just NOT LIVING! lol So for all of you out there reading this...take a listen if you'd like....if you want to comment, hey that's great! If not..maybe next time... if you feel I can work on something, shout it out :)

And howdy to everyone out there...now get back to singing! :)

Nicole

Thanks yall :) :D I think i am gonna make it :) I dont want to hurt feelings or step on toes at all..i appreciate your time to help me understand..tonmay ill check that thread out :) nic hugs gurl...i love to sing to...:)

you wont see me rate my personal friends at all..i just cant do it fairly ive found when i was a judge on another site...sooooo :)

I may just not rate lol but i like being rated..and i like the comments to back up the ratings :) so i know what to work on...like i said before pitch and timing i almost always have..emotion..mostly..tone..is subjective to each persons preference..i like to add my own impromtu things to my songs..so its not a mock of the original..but ive heard many people online an off that have plenty to teach me yet...would love to see mixing tips...that relate to normal pc programs that the average joe has...:) woohoooooooooooo :) love it!

Kass and everybody...
I record and submit on this site with the tools and toys that just everybody can get for "Free" or really "affordably" by download or "Demo". If those tools are not affordable I will be honest and let you know. The large studio and Live Pro audio engineering is how I make my living.. and if anybody was to ask, I would help in a honest way, providing they were good about it. I'm not an "All That" as a vocalist either.... but I do the subs to continue learning, but I also will tell you "honestly" from my point of view as an engineer and someone who has been employed by a small nashville independent recording label how I feel about your subs too. Although I'm probably not as easy as most are. So please don't be offended.. it's just me. 8)

I'm in your corner as a karaoke singer. It's all about the fun. :D

Now, BHB, I don't know just who your comments are directed to......

But, with your "Starlet" comment you just single handedly dissed every female on the site. As people read that comment, they are not going to know WHO you are referring to.

I personally haven't seen anyone on here who hasn't gotten SOME bad comments, or if not bad, atleast people telling them to change a few things. I haven't had one person get offended by things I've tried to offer as suggestions. True, I'm not as harsh as some.....

But I don't get the impression that any female on here thinks she's a "starlet". I think we all have hopes & dreams of being a good singer, & really want people to like our singing, else why would we be here. And, that's not JUST the "starlets", as you're saying. That goes for anyone who has posted a song. If we didn't want to be heard & be applauded, we would not do this. Heck, we wouldn't sing at karaoke clubs either for that matter , if not to be heard. Else we would all just sing at home, if it was for our pleasure only.

Yes, I think 10's are dished out way too much, I even do some of the dishing myself. But only if I personally like what I hear & think the person gave it their all.

And I have been sub'ing quite a few songs lately. But, the upgraded membership is offered, I paid for it, and I intend to keep sub'ing until my 25 spots are full. I'm gonna get my money's worth.

I have too many undeserved 10's, I can see that as plain as anyone else. But it does not go to my head, making me think I'm a perfect singer. And, I have just made the decision to not let anyone rank me anymore, because of this. I don't need 10's to stroke my ego. People's comments are good enough, and they are fun to read. Good comments do not however, make me feel like a "starlet", or think Nashville is gonna start calling.

I've been on here a month or so now, and I'm sorry, there are NOT any talent scouts on here looking for new voices to sign. They simply can not spend their days on one (out of many) music web sites looking for talent. They have enough people knocking their doors down to sing as it is. So, I for one do not think I'm here to be "discovered". I know how to pack up & head out to Nashville if I really thought I could make it.

And yes, most people are not on key 100% of the time. Not even pros. That's why at live events most of them are off key, they are not truly "good singers", they just have a "new sound". Which is truly stupid. If someone needs engineering to stay on key, they are not a good singer at all. They may have a unique voice: but, having a good voice & being a good singer are two totally different things.

But, I've said my piece, I hate when people have the wrong impression of ME. And, I may not have been included in your comment to the "starlets", but since I have mostly 10's and have recieved a few ~lol~ comments about heading to Nashville, and being on "Nashville Star", I figured maybe I am one of the ones. If not, I guess I'm just sticking up for the others on here, cause that was a low blow, BHB.

Sorry if I sound like a b****, but if ya meant to offend with your comment, ya did.

Well, fire your d*** optometrist. I don't think he's giving you the correct prescription 'cause you are so far off base. Your hearing is off, as well as your judgement of others, so your eyesight must be also.

But, opinions are like a**holes- we ALL have them and they ALL stink most of the time.

What an indirect, vague way to answer my question anyhow. And, you did NOT "hurt my feelers" : I said "If you were looking to offend someone ya sure did"- Offend simply means, you hit my B**** button. It would take alot more than that comment ya made, or low ratings or bad comments , or tone %'s from you to "hurt my feelers"

As for commenting or rating on my stuff, it's irrelevant to me. I do not rely on someone's equipment. I know how to stay in key, and when I'm off a little, trust me I can usually pick it apart myself & find it.

Ya see, there are those with money & the training who have equipment readings to teach us what we need to know, and those who are born with it and can call timing and pitch by ear.

I can hold my own in here, or anywhere else I choose to sing. Some will like it, some will not-as with any person who's ever sang a song.

There are some out there who post honest comments, some who don't, some who don't have the ear to do it correctly. (Excuse me, or the equipment to) I got rave reviews on one song that was a terrible match for my voice, but no one said it. So I know how to take the comments & ratings on here. We all are our own worst/best critics, in most cases.

I just guess I fail to see the reason for dissing people, when this is all supposed to be about karaoke. KARAOKE, for crying out loud, not getting signed by a major recording label.

You sure know how to get people on your bad side, & you do it for no good reason at all. Never knew ya had any kind of beef w/me until I read your post & just got your reply. But, we can't all be friends, leastwise not here apparently.
That's ok with me, though, I came here looking for fellow karaoke~nuts, not so-called-pro advice and long lasting relationships. ~lol~

So, back to recording & subbing songs for me, and if I ever make it to Nashville & The Grand Ol' Opry, I'll personally get on here just to let ya know. That's all from me, phone's ringing, it just might be Sony or Epic records for all I know.

Well Charlotte,

I hate to urinate in your "B**** Flakes" but If you have that Great "Golden ear" that you advertize. That so few really have Please come on down and be the first to take on the equipment I have in person. I bet You'll fail.
As a matter of fact I won't even waive my personal engineer's fee for you but the rest of the studio fees and consulting engineer's will apply.

I'd bet in vegas 2 to 1 odds you would refuse.

Charlotte is not in at the moment, so I, CHARMIN, will speak for her.

Geez, talking about my B**** Flakes, someone had a little too much caffeine for breakfast.

I don't fully understand your comment. You want to see if I know how to use your equipment? I'm sure I don't, but I'm also sure I could learn quickly enough. Having an ear for music, a "golden" one as you called it, I could probably be a pretty good sound engineer.

You have a very bad attitude, and if there's nothing for you to currently b**** about, or no one to put down, you simply make something up.

If you're suggesting I use your equipment to sing to, to test how on key I am, bring it on. I would take you on any day.

I'm sorry, but enough is enough- I'm generally a nice person, but I will not listen to someone run me & a bunch of others down for no reason. If there is a "starlet" here, I believe it's you. You want everyone to think YOU are "All That" with your talk of tech equipment. Maybe you have some access to the equipment, but I do NOT think you're all your making yourself out to be.

I mean, as someone else once told you, you make an excuse at the start of every song. If you have all this fancy equipment, why don't you put it to use? You may know how to run equipment, and again, you may not-who knows. But I have heard many recordings that sound clearer than yours, so why spend all your time downing everyone here?

So, put me on your % meter. I DO know this: To get a truly accurate reading on pitch, you have to have music & vocals on a seperate track. That's how all the recording studios here do it. They can't compare a solo track to itself. I've yet to see one that could differentiate between music & vocal when it's all being played together.

I would not hold my breath on any comment you give, I think you're just vindictive. Did I tick off one of your friends on here or something?

So, play your games with someone else, there are some other truly nice people on here. Yes, some that have told me things to change. But you're really not worth the time it's taking to write this. You seem to be an unhappy, hateful person. And, you running my singing down will NOT make me leave this website, so if that was your intention, sorry again.

Please complain about me to someone else who wants to hear it. Don't email me either, cause I wont respond. Or, go in and give me all 2's and 3's on the songs I did allow rating on. Maybe that'll make ya feel a little better.

WAY OFF BASE HERE!!! WOAH!!!

I'm betting that if she sings to what she knows to be her most on key performance.. I'm still betting that her "Golden ear" performance will be off according to the electronics. because as the industry and most educated people here know.. "NOBODY IS ON PERFECT KEY" without Assistance of a Vocal Tuner. And I would be willing to help prove that.

But Professional studio time is NOT free but I'm willing to Donate MY time to show that point. Those tools are NOT in MY home studio. But soon I hope. The closest to that tool is a "Spectrograph" on Audacity and it's quite hard to read in multi-track form.

Never said I had a "perfect" ear, you said that.

I was simply pointing out that I have a good ear for music. And no jibe from you is going to make me humble and say "I guess I don't because BHB said I don't" .

What a prude you are. You just don't like being told the truth about yourself. You are attempting to make me out to be the bad guy here, putting words in my mouth that I did not say.

*****So anyone reading here, please read ALL of the posts, like this comment paraphrased from what Michael Dane said:

Quote:
ps: does anyone really give a $*** what their rating is? I dont think yah' git a "prize" er' anything......

Michael,
Been My Point all along Pardner! [/quote]

That has NOT been your point all along, but MY point. I don't even have my songs rated anymore, before this little thing even started.

I wish you could just be a man and stand up and say what really ticked you off to begin with. Your equipment talk does not scare me. I am not ignorant when it comes to music, as you keep trying to point out.

And, if everyone in the world was always off key, who set the machines to read pitch? Had to be a human, so someone out there has perfect pitch. Or, did you set your own machine to your specs? Is that why it's rating everyone so badly?

Never said mine was perfect, but it's not terrible either. Your opinion on my singing no longer matters to me. Or your petty comments. I'm off to sub another song.
