I went to my local music store the other day to pick up a Yamaha sv115 speaker to match another one I already have as a back up to my Peavey Sp5gs ( 65+LBS each). The Yamaha I have was the IV series and I got it at a blowout price of $199...Should have bought 2 then :bawling:
Anyway to make a long story short they only had the new "V" series Yamaha and although A VERY GOOD SPEAKER it was $329.00.
I ended up buying (2) PEAVEY PR12" SPEAKERS for $300.00 for the pair ! :D  I used them last night and I would reccomend these speakers to anyone who is looking for a very good speaker for small to medium applications . Granted not up to the Peavey SP5G or other more expensive speakers BUT VERY GOOD for small to medium venues
even had compliments from some of the regular singers
Overall sound was very good ( took a little differant EQ'ing) but once set up ...ROCKED
The best part is I carried them out one in each hand .. :D :D

I use a pair of SoundTech 15" speakers for my karaoke gigs. They sound wonderful and have been the source of many compliments. Yes their main advantage is size and easy of mobility.

The downside of small speakers is mostly one of image. That is, the generl public, and people in the music business/bands etc. tend to equate size with quality. They also equate power output, number of knobs and "name-brand" to mean qauality.

So from a purely business standpoint of impressing everyone, the 85 knobed mixer as well as the big gun speaker will make them ooh and awe. We all have to weigh the impact of this advantage in every situation. It is a reality.

Good things also come in small packages......

Best regards,

Lee

Size matters to a certain aspect. If you are doing a 100 sq ft room, sure you won't need nothing more than a couple of small speakers. Those same 2 speakers wouldn't sound as full in a room that's say 1000 sq ft as effectively. 15" 2 ways are pretty much the norm in karaoke so it sounds like you are right there as well - as far as "size". The bigger the room & more people that are there to absorb the sound, the more sound you are going to need to project which can be achieved by increasing power in the amp (which doesn't do much unless you double the wattage which will give you about a 1db increase) higher power does give you louder capability, but is more for cleaner sound at regular levels - ie headroom, add bigger speakers, or add more speakers - which is the most effective but not always cost efficient. Small speaker can't move as much air as larger speakers & pro-speakers of smaller size 8", 10" & 12" are generally designed to reproduce more midrange to mid/low frequencies. 15" speakers are better for lower & sub frequencies while 18" speakers are good for nothing but sub frequenies.
Good things do come in small packages. Mackie DFX12 is a great example. I use the CFX12 but it is not to impress anybody visually, it handles almost all inputs I have to feed it - could actually use 4 more channels, but...main reason I use it is the sound is excellent (yes I have used & actually have cheaper boards) over anything in it's price range or cheaper, it has all the features I need as well that some of the smaller boards don't accomodate.

Oh yea, I absolutly love my Peavey PR 112's. Got the pair deliverd from american musical for undr $300.00. The are very tight soundng, very crisp and clean.

You cannot beat these for the price point. I bought these specifically for Karaoke. Liked em so much I did a review for american musical on them.

I actually run two systems.. My smaller system I run the PR15's with a crown ce1000 amp... For the price, you can't beat em' and they only weigh like 35 pounds... EQ'ing is a bit differerent I agree... What really added some help to them is the Behringer Ultrafex 3800 sonic maximizer.. Gives them a bit more bass punch and high end sparkle and crispness... All that for under 400 bucks for the pair.. come on they rock!!

And for my 2 Cents.....I too have PR12's and am very happy with the sound....running a Peavey 600g powered mixer. (400 watts) very happy with my sound...when I do a show The regular singers say my system sounds better than most KJ set ups here in Gainesville FL, ,.,,CAVS 202
and only 1600 songs. I know most of you dont like tipping but I walked away from my last show with $125.00 in tips and my normal Fee of $125.00. and to add to a comment in another thread about fender P1 Mic's I do agree I have one that came with my Fender 150 Passport and the mic is my fav...over my sure sm58 and my sm57. Im a happy camper with what I got ......I just wish now that they would produce more Jethro Tull songs On CD+G....

Had a PR15 blow last night during "Back to Cali".... Dernit... I'm running a crown ce1000.. No clip was detected, couldn't hear any distortion... Not sure why my speaker smoked, But it did... classic symptoms of rattle and power loss after that song on that side.. Other speaker sounds fine...But the good news is, Parker Music in Houston stocks them for 159.00 each on a cash transaction... Oh well I guess that happens from time to time.. I wonder if this speaker was a little weak from the beginning.. Interesting thing.. One speaker said rated 400 program 800 peak... The PR15 that blew was stamped 300 program and 600 peak.. I wonder if Peavey maybe refined the manufacturing process and I got one older speaker and a newer one when I ordered them...

The PR series is an entry level speaker, not really designed for any kind of abuse or heavy bass songs. People buy them because they are cheap, but they truely are not a professional grade speaker. The low frequency drivers utilize a 2" voice coil which can't generate the low frequencies as well nor handle the power. A 3" voice coil is normal for most PA speakers & a 4" is even better. It loks like they did upgrade the woofer to a 2 3/8" voice coil but that really isn't that big of a difference - these are still too small to really be ran on a regualr basis at max volume. They don't list the continuous power handling. Since the peak power is listed at 800 watts & the program power is listed at 400 watts, it's continuous power handling is most likely 200 watts. Your amp is pushing 275 watts into 8 ohms. Technically still underpowered for the speaker so this could be why you blew it - or the fact that it was trying to reproduce notes (Rap can do that to a speaker - even good ones) that it wasn't designed to do.

Yeah, in further research the old adage, U Get What U Pay for applies.. While they have actually lasted about 6 months runnning two nights a week, I think you're right they are a bit underpowered for our kinda show out at that venue.. I could not resist the temptation to purchase two JBL JRX125 speakers to run at that particular show... I paid 319.00 apiece for them new.. I really think for the kind of music we're doing these will be a much healthier solution.. I also ordered new parts for the PR15 and I will nurse them back to health and relegate them to my smaller venues that don't require as much power...
