Correct me if this has been done, but I think I've just witnessed the first karaoke band in action. They are a local cover band that has been together for nearly 20 years, and tonight they began a new direction: running their shows as karaoke gigs, allowing the audience the opportunity to sign up to sing with the band. Watching the events unfold over the course of the evening, I feel that this venture will be extremely successful. Personally, I hadn't fronted a band in over 11 years, and it brought back a magic that I'd almost forgotten.

Comrades in arms, what are your comments?

Nothing quite like a live band thats for sure. They have been doing that in southern california for along time but the venues are and few and inbetween. It is the ultimate karaoke experience. Screw the monitors learn the damn lyrics....

We've had a band doing that here for about 2 years now. Rockaraoke is the name of the band.
They did really good the first year but now it's starting to die because they can't learn newer songs fast enough.

I stand corrected. Upon further research I could have figured that out.

It's been done in Nashville too.. for along time.

It's called "Showcasing".

Where developmental artists or the public come to sing with established professional musicians at established venues, and the public pays a cover and watch the newest and up and coming artists. as well as the unknown.

Not a new deal at all, maybe new in some areas.

There's a big difference between Karaoke and singing with a band. I also host an Open Mic / Karaoke night. At times some of the band members will ask one of the better Karaoke singers to join them for a song. It doesn't always work out. Had a great time at a small lounge one night that had a single guitarist for Karaoke, pick a song and he'd play it for you while you sing.
