Why do Kjs list songs like Closer by NIN or Sir Psycho Sexy by the Chilli Peppers then later scold the singer for swearing????

And another thing, , why is swearing inappropriate in a bar?

It's not always the kj's fault, they are under instruction from the bar to not play particular songs. If the kj has other shows other than that 1 club, they wouldn't redo their books for that 1 club.
I am in a club that disapproves of vulgarity in the music ie swearing. Since I am there 7 nights for 12 years, I redid my books completely to accomodate their request. We did it mainly because when those songs were in the book, we were drawing a younger crowd that didn't spend money, caused several problems a night & would scream into the mics as opposed to singing. When the bar requested that I take those songs out, rather than lose a great gig, I complied & we lost all the problems & those customers, but we gained almost double what we lost on money spenders & some really good singers.

Just because it's a bar full of grown people, doesn't mean that everyone should be forced to hear language they may not want to hear.
It's one thing to be sitting at a table and somebody says something inappropriate, you can always move to another table, but if it's over the PA system, there is no where to go. You'd be surprised how many clubs DON'T allow those types of songs - i've been in & worked at several.

honestly, forced to hear language that thy don't want to hear? I would be a happy person if I didn't have to hear "Goodbye Earl" again, yet I tolerate that song literally every single time I go out to karaoke with my friends.


I don't know about where you are from, but in wisconsin the younger people are the ones who buy the most booze.

Mini rant: People who are offended by language should grow up. It's a word. The word might refer to sex. Does the idea of sex bother them? Sexual repression is a problem, not the status quo. They have a problem that they should get help for. One solution is to not go to bars.

"Foul language" has a place. That is NOT at a job interview. That is NOT at a wedding. Why not? Because it's considered vulgar. Fair enough. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with using the language you are most comfortable with.

All KJs should remove songs that have strong language BEFORE scolding a patron for simply picking something out from the book.

Knowing which songs have swear words in, I always keep a finger on the mixer. The younger people like to yell out swear words, probably trying to tell the more mature generation something (rebellion I guess), or impressing their friends. When it gets to that point, I turn the volume down, flash a smile and it's over and done.

I've never had any complaints from any singers becuase their screaming or swearing was silenced out.

The point is, I run the show, and I will control the mike. A bunch of young kids drinking and trying to be cool has never impressed me.

I for one don't yell at someone for swearing... but there are a few venues out there that aren't as open minded as I am.

No matter what we posture about, WE do NOT call the shots. Ultimately, it's what the customer wants. And if they say no "F Bomb", then no smeggin' F-Bomb, okay?

One other option is that a KJ may not be familiar with a particular song, and therefor, not know the language in it until it's already come out over the speakers. Just an explination.

I for one don't particularly care for vulgar language or swearing in public. Don't take me wrong, I'm not a prude. But I like a place I can take a lady into and not have to worry about being embarassed, or have to put up with language that makes the situation uncomfortable. I know its a club and there are going to be incidents, but when it gets out of hand it becomes time to get a handle on it. I certainly dislike those who use the "F" word 6-8 times in every sentance while in public, and think nothing of it, expecting everyone else to have to put up with it. It just shows either a poor upbringing or poor attitude toward others, and certainly a lack of respect for others. Go ahead and do whatever ya want in private, or among your friends. However, once you start carrying on in public, there comes a point where you infringe on others.

last night, went to a club. I was tolerating it... it wasn't that great, but had tremendous potential.

then the KJ, after warming up with a couple rotations, sings "Down With The Sickness". Now, I have this song too, but nobody's ever done it.

This KJ relished singing the "juicy parts", and most of the people in the bar were quite a bit shocked. He did it WELL, I'll grant him that, but I just didn't think it appropriate!

It's one of those moments when you really don't know what to do!

I, personally, despise Eminem but a lot of my younger singers want that C*** in my catalogue!

I, on the other hand, love to hear the Sex Pistols version of My Way as an antedote to one of the most widely used songs ever on karaoke.

Horses for courses! You alone can judge your audience and determine whether or not they are going to go with the flow!

yes, it is a bar/pub/club where you must be 21 to enter, but "your lack of obscenity offends no one" (saw it on a bar sign)

I have no problem with most words, after all as george carlin says they're just words

But the word I don't tollerate is the F--- word; or anytime profanity is used outside of the lyrics.......

Oh yes I have bought CD's will songs that are down-right nasty like AMS 2001 and the "songs your mama wont let ya sing" (Sound choice).... are they in my database, yes; are they in the books, NO

With the database i use MS access i have a little checkbox on the end of each entry that says PRINT, if it is checked it prints, if not it don't.... this is used for the duplicates (like 4 dupes) too... When i print the KJ's book, it will print the whole database, singer's books are filtered on the PRINT field

I did a database for a fellow KJ, and he said, when you get to Ode to my car, don't put it in the books, one click does it all

I guess the venues I frequent are not like most cause anything goes, of course these venues resemble the place discribed in Toby Keith's song "I Love This Bar".... ....I believe that some of the responsiblity belongs to the singer.....as a singer I try to select songs that are in tune with the venue's crowd....a singer picks songs they are fimilar with...you wouldn't sing "The Rodeo Song" at church.....comman sense....

I don't like any fourm of censorship.....pretty liberal in my beliefs, but why go out of your way to offend people....
