One thing that I was unaware of when I joined was that we weren't just ranked on our voice. We were ranked on our sound equipment as well.
So, if someone has their song done by or is an experienced 'Tech Person'
then of course they are gonna sound much better than someone who knows diddlly-squat about 'Tech Stuff' or cannot afford a good computer with all the bells and whistles, whether they have a better voice or not.
I know that there are recording artists out there that save the sound stuff to the 'sound people' and just concentrate on their voice. I didnt know we needed to know both to submit a song. Lack of observance on my part.
I don't know why I am getting caught up in all this ranking stuff. I have one song submitted that isn't close to a '10' and I am well aware of that. I am submitting for fun and nothing more. But I guess I am hoping to help improve everyones experience here just as much as my own.
So anyway, how can we make it fair to the majority (I know we can't possibly please everyone).
Maybe try ranking on voice and tech seperately or maybe add together to rank but comment on them both?
I am not, nor do I claim to be, an expert. I am just a member that likes to sing and wanted to share what ability I had and meet other people with the same interest.

You bring up an excellent point!

The technical quality should be ranked lower (if at all) than the singers voice quality.

Bringing your song to the site is the most important item. If you recorded it using "poor quality" equipment or not. However, I have seen people give advise on how to record better. That is great and I wish to encourage that. But ranking someone lower because of it is IMHO just a bad idea.

Thanx

Phill

I wish to reply to Phill's last post..
Techincal quality plays a little if any part on my scoring.. one guy got a 9 or a 10 from me I don't remember... and recorded with a radio shack microphone. I have some of the best stuff in the world, and have trouble with file conversions and compressing files in mp3. It's the easiest and simplest stuff in the worls that seems to sound so much better here. I am not going to rip out my studio to do that...

Anybody want the CD versions? J/K

Okay now added - The rank average.

Next to the members name in the comments is the average rank they have provided.

Also I added this to the users profile.

I am looking into some of the other features...

Anyone else have some ideas?
=====
Brian,

Recently, I have seen that you have been bombarded by attacks based on some of your remarks.

First, let me suggest that you relax! Be cool. This site is about having fun and enjoying ourselves. Except for a few, most are not Professionals and do not plan to be. They just want to enjoy themselves.

Second, Some people don't have the "technical know how" of others. When it comes to recording - I'm an idiot! :) Someday, maybe I'll submit a song - Don't hold your breaths... However, when & if, I do you may want to hold your ears!

Third, whether or not you agree with the members, it is always best to remember the old cliche' "If you don't have anything nice to say - Don't say anything at all" It works for me...

Fourth, Just enjoy!

Thanks,

Phill

Phill,
I believe that should apply to all.. I'm being very selective to who I rank for now.
Thanks.
BTW -- One of the sessions I just Co-Engineered just appeared in "Pro Sound News" April edition, in the "Sessions" section Page 34. I really don't care as to what THEY say this is supposed to be fun and submitting here is just showcasing in a "Small world" it's not for recording deals or audio contracts. I'm really not worried. It's all about vocal play time.

Some just shouldn't take it so seriously. showcasing is not life or death unless it has a prize attached to it other than a Shure beta 58 microphone.

- Restrict RANKING to Members who have posted a song. This is good for reference purposes.. but just because someone posted a song doesn't qualify if they are a good judge of talent. It's just a priviledge for contributing a song.

Done!

Took a while to figure it out but I think I've got it!

Let me know on this...

just to let everyone know: when i do rank, i do count sound quality for a small, and i do mean SMALL, portion of it...simply because of the fact that i can get a good sound out of my system without any effort

when i record, i just use a headphone mic, an onboard sound card, & CEP...nothing professional, no SBLIVE sound card or anything like that...it's easy enuff to get good sound from any system...and by good sound i don't mean professional quality either

to me, sound quality means the efficient use of echo & reverb & the volume levels of both the background track & the vocals compared against each other...a track where it is hard to hear the singer because the recording level for the vocals is too low will garner a lower rank from me...the whole point of the submission is to hear the singer, not the music...also, in some cases, users can be pretty heavyhanded when it comes to the use of echo/reverb and, to me, this detracts from the quality of the submission

sound quality is an important part of the rankings on any site like this...to point it out makes it easier for people to get that 'right' sound they are looking for, no matter what equipment they use

Enjoy the site! :P

Can,
Some don't know the genra well enough like in the oldies songs and metal/hard rock where reverb & delay is used.. if ya go back on alot of the original songs.. there was alot of really old songs that had alot of delay and verb.. some songs today like my originals use alot of effects.

That's just the way I & my producer like it. I feel more comfy singing it with more effects. 8)

It's also very subjective.

i only judge submissions in the popular & rock categories anyways...besides, it's not a comparision between the original & the submission...if i can't hear a singer sing, then that's points off...simple as that...same with too much echo/reverb...stuff like that...things that detract from the submission

there are some things i think i could help all users with when it comes to the sound quality of a submission... i realize not everyone has the experience i do...that's why i try to give them some tips when it comes to recording, to help them out...that's what judging is all about...i am not looking for 'perfection' or 'professional' quality, i am looking for general overall quality only

Enjoy the site! :P

Just a humble sugestion.

Is it possible to add in an other feature. that is View or Listen. Thus :

Hero (4), (15) ...... ........ Badsinger 6

song (number of comments), (total number of people who listen inculding those who do not leave comment and did not rank) ...... Singer Rank

This way it give those who submit songs to know that there are more people listening to their songs than just those who commented.

Badsinger,
I totally agree.. If I listen to a song I at least rate it and leave a comment if possible as a courtesy whether I liked it or not.. 8)

That fast Brian. I do not rank songs anymore. I listen and have to leave comments just to let the singer know that someone have listen to the song. Now i run out of comments and may be repeting myself. Thus the suggestion

canpanther i would love to hear ur sound...a good/not great soundcard DOES make a big differents, and a SB card is fair at best when others use cards costing as much as 1000.00 dollars... this is a singing site NOT a recording site, but i do agree we need to hear the persons voice when singing...but if u can't hear it why not leave a comment that u can't hear the singing well enough to rate and move on...there may be someone that comes on here no nothing about mixing but has the best voice on here....why take points off?... its Singers Showcase.... rate there singing not there mixing

I DONT CARE IF THEY SUB TO RATE LOL ...I THINK THE THING TO DO IS TAKE AWAY THE ANONYMOUS OPTION...WHY HIDE WHAT U THINK? IM NOT ASHAMED TO TELL ANYONE WHAT I RANKED..AND WHY...THATS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE..

OH MIX...ONE OF THE THINGS ME AND WILBUR DONT AGREE ON LOL I WORKED HARDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD TRYIN TO MAKE MY LITTLE TINY COMPAQ MIC AND HP FACTORY INSTALLED SOUNDCARD SOUND LIKE WILBURS AND TJ'S AND TAMMYS AND TIMS AND UMPTEEN OTHER PEOPLE WHO ROCK ON MIXING..

FUN IS WONDERFUL..THE "fun" FACTOR COMES WITH SINGING THE SONG WHILE YOU ARE RECORDING IT.. but IF YOU DONT PRESENT IT RIGHT..IT WONT STAND OUT..YOU WONT STAND OUT ..PEOPLE WONT NOTICE..CUZ UR VOICE IS HIDDEN DEEP IN HISS AND HUM AND CRACKLE AND POP...WHY? WHEN YOU CAN ASK PEERS FOR ADVICE?

I STILL HAVE ALOTTTTTTTT TO LEARN..AND I PLAN TO LEARN IT LOL I LEAVE MY SONGS OPEN..RATE THEM..TELL ME..AM I FLAT..DID I LACK EMOTION..DID MY MIX RUN THE ROACHES AWAY...DID I MIMICK OR DID I ADD A FEW NEW EXCITING TWISTS TO THE SONG...AND OVERALL HOW DID U FEEL ABOUT MY SONG... NICELY..LOL

IF WE WANTED TO JUST SING AND HAVE FUN I THINK MOST OF US WOULD HEAD OFF TO THE KARAOKE BAR...BUT ..WE WANT PEOPLE TO LIKE US..WE WANT THEM TO SAY AWESOME ..WOW..WOOHOO...

ANYHOWSODAGGUMEVER....

ON RANKIN...LET WHOEVER..BUT LOSE THE ANONYMOUS FEATURE..THAT WILL GET RID OF ALOT OF THE RANKING WITHOUT BOTHERIN TO SAY ANYTHIGN EXCEPT WONDERFUL ..GREAT..AWESOME...IF PEOPLE KNOW OTHERS CAN SEE IT THEY MITE ACTUALLY TAKE TIME TO TELL WHY THEY CHOSE THAT 8 OR 5 OR 9 EVEN..HUGS ...THIS SITE HAS SURE GROWN IN LAST COUPLE WEEKS..AND THE EXCITMENT IS AWESOME..

THE PEOPLE ARE...10'S IN MY BOOK

HUGS..

P.S. SINCE FEW SONGS ARE WHAT I WOULD CALL PERFECT..THE EXPLANATIONS WOULD REALLY COME IN HANDY WITH THE RANKS THAT ARE 8 AND UNDER..MOST OF US GET NINES..LOL IT USED TO BE TENS :) ID LOVE TO SEE THE WHOLE SCALE USED..

"Some just shouldn't take it so seriously"... Brian, I like you, but constantly hearing you tooting your own horn is getting to be very, very old. It's like you're trying to prove it. Well, I for one, could care less if you're an expert, or if you're not. This is NOT a pro site. It's for everyone. I could care less if experts come to this site.

If they are, one thing that they are seeing is the division amongst us.

since people are responding negatively to your comments, try toning them down.

and as far as not subbing your best material... We're trying our best, and when there are comments directed at you that you need to improve this or it's not your best effort... and then to hear / read this... I find that very questionable.

btw... I vote for they should sub a song for review. If they're own stuff is up there, then I can listen to what they have sang... and take what they have to say either with a grain of salt or complete and utter gospel!
