Can anyone help me decide on a compressor/limiter? Here is what's going into my Mackie CFX-12:
4 mics
2 CAVS players
1 JVC Triple tray
2 CD players
1 tape deck

Well you could go cheap quality & get the Behringer quad compressor or a couple Alesis 3630 (dual channel) for you mics, or you can pay for a lot more quality & get something like a couple dbx 166XL or 266XL (these are both dual channels) or the 1046 Quad compressor - about the same price as buying 2 166XL.

Well, the DBX 1046 Quad Compressor looks like one sweet piece of equipment. Too bad it's out of my range. So, would you say the Behringer unit is the next in line of quality for a quad unit? What about any other brands?

I use a DBX 2 channel limiter/compressor...works great!
It's worth spending the money now on better equipment. You'll always wonder how much better your sound could have been if you had only spent a few bucks more.
Take it from me... you'll lose more money in the long run if you keep upgrading.

I've decided to go with the DBX unit. I was bidding on a new one on ebay, but got outbid at the last second. It went for $350.00 from some seller in Indiana. May be just as well. I hear about ebay scams from time to time. Besides it might be worth the peace of mind to know the people I get it from right here close to home and know that they will take care of me if anything goes wrong.

Most e-bay'ers are on the level. Just make sure to check their feedback rating & read the comments people leave. Also look at how many comments have been left. True everyone has to start somewhere, but if they have anything less than 100 comments, I would generally pass. Made over 20 purchases through them (some major), haven't been burned once.

Well, this seller had 97 comments and 100% were positive. To bad I got outbid. I just got back from Austin where I picked one up new from Guitar Center. I hear these things can be very tricky to get adjusted right. any ideas on where I should start with the settings on it? Tomorrow will be an outdoor gig.

Start from Here... and gradually adjust your compression ONLY to clean up audio or compress it more. If you are NOT over mixing or driving your channel gain too hard these numbers should be valid.
Ratio 3.0:1 Comp. -20 Lim. +2 db. attack off release off Gate -50
Good luck.
