Well, I am back from the contest and I won. Amazing really. I hope I never win again. It was cool and all, but way too stressful and emotional. Another reason I think I won (even though I am a good singer) is that anyone that could have been good enough to give me a run for my money, were not there all four weeks and that was one of the requirements to win the finals.
Now I understand though why many don't like the contests and I have to agree. I am glad I won because I really needed that DVD player, but I am glad it is over. I just want to go out and sing, have a great time and meet cool people.

I did 3 songs, won and then was the next singer for a final song. They were as follows:
You Make Me Feel Brand New ~ Simply Red
Holding Back The Years ~ Simply Red
Lady ~ Little River Band
And the final song after I won was:
Suite Madam Blue ~ Styx

Thank you, both. You know the hardest thing was trying to figure out which of about 30 or so songs to do.
In the 10 weeks I have been doing karaoke I have done close to about 60 songs! I know that sounds crazy, but I am not kidding. I am the one person at this guys show that is always looking for new songs every week. The one good thing is it has given me a better idea of which songs I do better, but unfortunately there are many.
I am trying to weed it down to just a handful for such an an occasion like last night, but it is so hard to choose! Oh well, guess my choices worked for me anyway.
Again, thanks for your congrats. I was thinking next week of doing Mandy by Barry Manilow and telling the audience, "Let's see if I can do this better than John Stevens of AI." (But we won't go there as that show is a bunch of crap.)

Oh you had to mention the red head crooner (gag)
Hi ya, I am new, but had something to say too, you will find I usually do.
I have a karaoke store and show, and we have a 3 month contest coming up.
It is sponsored by the city of North Augusta and a TV & Radio station as well as a Flea Mall. They want to spred it out over the summer, promotion of course for the Mall.
I am hosting it, and running it really.
The judges have a judging sheet for each contestant, and there are 6 different judges for each contest.
There are 2 open competions in May, the top 4 from each of those go to the Semi Finals in June, and the top 4 from the semi finals go to the Finals in July.
Since this isn't a regular venue for me, I feel comfortable about it. And Fellow KJ's in the area are actually promoting it at thier shows!
But we are kind of weird here.. We all actually get along. The KJ's that is.
We go to each others shows, give tips, sell used equipment you name it.
We even have an annual KJ christmas party where Karaoke is NOT ALLOWED!
Need a break ya know.
Personally I am the odd duck I think. I like contests, they are good for business and they DO bring out people. I have been lucky because I have never held a contest where there was backstabbing or kvetching afterwards. Knock on wood.
I think if a contest is run smoothly and as professionally as possible with the rules clearly laid out, there is usually no problem.
My only real rule of song selection is no swearing or cursing songs, and The Rose, Grandpa and Somewhere Over The Rainbow are not allowed.
My name is Dan by the way, but most people call me Bubba (Ya another Bubba in the south!)
Oh and please excuse my spelling, I ain't stupid, just had a stroke in Feb. and had to learn how to read and spell all over again and sometimes I just get messed up!
Bubba

Congrads on the win!!! We sang last night in a contest billed The Rotary Search for the Stars. Wow, what a night! We didn't win, but we had a great time . The crowd was large and into the moment. Most all of the singers did a great job. My wife and I each did a single and then we did a duet.
I really love singing in a big theater where the sound is really sweet.
We sang " We Believe In Happy Endings", my wife sang "Coal Miners Daughter" and I sang "Man To Man"....
Everything was wonderful, the crowd was great and the judges were not only qualified, but fair. The only bad point in the evening was after the show when we all went to a local karaoke venue to celebrate. Shortly after we arrived, another contestant and his following got up and left, which was no big deal. But when I went up to give the KJ our slips he ask about the contest and how we did. I told him we didn't win but had a really good time and can't wait for next year!
Then he told me, he ask this other contestant that left upon our arrival the same question and his answer was ..."The best part of the evening was that my wife and myself didn't win".... That sorta took the glow off the moment. But hey the rest of the night was great!
Everybody who particpated in the contest last night were winners!...It was for a good cause and it's sad when people can't handle not being #1....
We'll post pics on the photo gallery when we get them....
Hey congrads again on your win!

Hey, thanks for the grats. Maybe someone else will win next months, that would only be fair. I just hope people come out and sing, because they are changing it to a point system and there are only maybe about 7 of us that make it out every week and are there the whole night. Doesn't leave many people with the most points.
I think it is hard to have a show with the winner being the "best" singer, because there are always more than one "great" singer and which do you pick?
Really isn't that fair and karaoke is supposed to be about having fun. This is my favorite show, KJ, and night for me and I don't want to stop singing just because they are having contests to drum up business for the bar.
Is it ok to just tell them not to count you in the contest and just sing for fun on your turn? Still trying to learn the proper ettiquette.

ya never have to preform ...it's a free country... ....
I personally love contest cause I love the competition....I believe that people generally try a little harder in contest because it's the nature of the beast....and everyone is a winner if they do there best and have the guts to enter....you always have a chance of loosin' it's part of the game, but if ya get that rush when the crowd applauds you've won in my book....
actually I feel sorry for the sore loosers, cause they take all of the fun out competin' .... ya know the type...everyone gets the blame...bad judges...the KJs didn't run the sound right...it was too bassy or not enough bass...too much reverb or not enough...they were first or they were last....the contest was rigged....on and on and on....
I sing in contest all the time and I have a great deal of fun doing it....and I have never won first place....always a brides maid never a bride... ....but I keep tring cause I love the lime light...I'm a junky...I admit it.....and yes I think it's FUN! FUN! FUN!....

I agree, KKid. It is so much fun and they real reward is pleasing the crowd. I mean, I actually have a following. People will ask me if I am going to be there that night, they can't wait for me to sing. Also, they request that I sing stuff for them. Amazing as I have only been doing this like 10 weeks. But you are right, you are a winner if you do a good job and make people happy. That is what it is all about really.
And I always applaud the people that don't do so well either, cause at least they had the guts to get up there and try. I can't stand the people who complain that someone "sucks", (which they do ) but they themselves won't get up there and sing. If a person won't get up there and show us all how it is done, then they should really keep their mouth shut. IMHO.

Well worse those who don't sing and complain are those who do sing and complain about all those things I mentioned before. Cause they are the ones that give Karaoke a bad name.
ya know the ones who.....never think the sound is right....wine about the rotation...cry and moan when they loose, blaming everyone from the KJ to the janitor....
those are the singers that leave non-singers with a bad oppinion of karaoke...

Agreed. Oh, and one other thing that really bothers me, especially when they do it in a competition where it counts, is the people who think they can sing and they come up and just grab a mike while someone else is singing, thinking they will help you out on background vocals. All that ends up doing is throwing you off key. Argh.
Now, I just stand in the way if I see them coming. Won't let them near that other mike!

You ever notice that many singers who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket believe that if they could sing with someone who can sing that they'll sound better. As anyone that's been around for a while knows, this just doesn't work! Tring to sing with someone so off key or out of tempo is not only difficult, but ends up soundin' worse than if the bucket carrier sang by themselves.
As for drunks who go up and grab a mic, well I have a very strong dislike for people who try to mess up my preformance. If I want or need the help I'll ask.

Those singers(drunks) should never get that far. I have printed rules that I make everyone aware of, you will not come up on the stage with another singer unless asked to. If I don't head them off before they get there, they will be singing into a dead mic, since I turn off ones not in use.
