Hi, made my first (very belated) attempt at public karaoke on Sat at daughter's bday bash.
Loved it and might get hooked, but I tend to sing ballady numbers, Sat was "Solitary Man" "Love on the Rocks" "Boy named Sue"
So...........
I would love some suggestions for more upbeat tracks to suit a sort of mid-range baritone.
What have you found gets audience most involved and inclined to dance or join in?

A Boy Named Sue is a ballad?

I simply don't know, which is why I turned to country after never listening to it for 50 years. The number of rock tunes for baritones is pretty limited. One that was a cross over is Follow Me by Uncle Kracker. You might think about Bungle in the Jungle or Bad Bad Leroy Brown.

If you really want to get their attention: "Symphony Of Destruction" - Megadeth.

I'm serious! It's highest note is an E! Any baritone can sing (or snarl) it. As metal goes it's simple and not very long. And you will be noticed in a way not possible if you are singing Neil Diamond or Johnny Cash... common artists covered in a karaoke bar.

OK something a little less radical: "So Far Away" - Dire Straits.

These two are among songs I turn to if I have a cold or something.

People at my shows LOVE a boy named sue! Gets the dance floor going!

Here's a couple more: "Runnin' Down A Dream" and "You Don't Know How It Feels" - Tom Petty.

Thanks for suggestions, "Sing what you like" sounds like good advice, trouble is, I love all sorts of music from Baroque to Hard Rock, and just about everything in between.
Having a massive choice is OK, but it is great to hear other folks' ideas to bring a bit of freshness into the thought process.

P.S. If a ballad is a story set to music, Boy Named Sue has to be a bloody great story (still makes me smile every time)

Mustang Sally or Land of 1000 Dances by Wilson Pickett always works for me, in fact i have the screams down to a science, always packs the dance floor!

For any show I am at when I get up and sing the Honey Drippers "Good Rockin' at Midnight" the dance floor is full...

Mind you it is usually pretty close to midnight and lots of people have had lots to drink ...**HIC**:drinklaugh:

Another good one is to get people dancing is "Flip, Flop n' Fly" by the Blues Brothers or DownChild Blues Band...

I was at a show saturday night and a guy sang Flip, Flop& Fly. You are right! Great upbeat song by The Blues Brothers.

Humpty Dance always gets people up at my shows - especially if you change the names in it to those in attendance.

Here's another suggestion; the Soundchoice version of "I FEEL GOOD" or maybe some upbeat Elvis.

to instill energy into the show, I sometimes will sing "I want you to want me" by Cheap Trick or "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone-Loc.

Most anything by New Order is in a mid baritone, Bizzare Love Triangle usually goes over well and is a techno dance song. Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls" is mostly low except maybe one small part on the chorus. Under the Milky Way by The Church is another, while although not upbeat it is a cool song. Simple Mind's "Don't You Forget about Me is low also except the "Hey Hey Hey Hey, whoo ooh ooh" part.

Totally agree with the "Stuck in the middle With You" mentioned, great song and a song that I frequently use as a voice warm up song, the high part on this song is falsetto so it's not hard to do.

Sometimes after a cold these are some of the songs that are a little easier for me to do without worrying about being able to hit the higher register notes. Rudy.

People dance to a boy named sue? I love that song and have thought about singing it at my next show but can't see dancing.

Ripman, I was HOPING it wasn't just me that felt that way.

I've never seen ANYBODY dance to that song, ever!
