Actually, most of those are rip offs. They charge for free player software, so as the man says. "Buyer Beware".

While I too deplore the usage of illegal karaoke media, let us all be honest here. Perhaps you all have had different experiences than I, but almost every KJ that I know uses burned CD's that they get from each other. With discs selling for upwards of $30 for six songs, I can se why.

Well I am a kj & can say with God as my witness - I have never used burnt cd's from other companies nor have I lent them out to be copied. That would be the most assanine thing & a great way to cut my own throat while doing it. Gee now everyone has the same selection, what's so special about your show now?? I have discs in my collection that are discontinued, why the Hell would I want another company to have anything that I have. DUH!
Everything I have is, has & will be purchased - legally!

Okay, LET'S be honest.

"You don't get something for nothing." my grandfather.

I copy my discs, to protect my original investment. Period.

I abhor thieves, and detest those that are trying to ruin the livelihoods of others for their own bitter two cent enjoyment.

Here's a legal way. Pay $ for streaming songs! You can sing all you want, whenever you want... you can't save the media, but as a paid member, you can go out there and do this. For a very small price.

Check out our European friends at Sing To The World!

Anyone who is paying $30 and up for a 6 song disc has to be making a special effort to get themselves ripped off. There are plenty of websites out there which stock quality brands for around 20 bucks for a disc of 15-18 songs.

The only way I'm gonna pay $30 for 6 songs is if it's a custom CD.

www. karaokesurplus. com has the Pop Hits Monthly stuff for $14.99 each (plus shipping). Their website doesn't show the 2004 collection, but call them up and they'll sell 'em to you! Shop around people. 8)

Rip off rip off that is what they are.

I too have NEVER used a duped disc and I won't. Heck I got the whole music maestro country sets 1 - 4 on ebay for $45 bucks, that is for 20 discs!! It can be done cheap!

I do copy mine as stated before to protect my investment (which some say is questionable but according to copyright laws it is a hazy area), but no one else copies mine and I won't copy anyone elses.
I am a songwriter, so I know that someone isn't getting paid and that isn't fair. You may think you aren't hurting anyone, but you are. (I mean you in general not specifically one person) :)

Think of it as going to your job and you work all day. Then your boss comes in at the end of the day and says.. Gee I didn't want you to come in today so your not getting paid.

Same thing.

Bubba

I backup my originals too, they cost a lot of money, and i would rather not to have to replace discs, i wanna buy new music, not repurchse...

Another thing for those of us that frequent other shows on off days, not all hosts take care of their discs, let alone your discs.

Have i downloaded MP3+G files from the net, YES I HAVE, i stored them on my personal machine, and practiced the songs to be sure i can do the song, then i ran out and bought a legal copy...... Why buy a CD for one song and find out i can't sing it, or don;t like the version.
NOTE: I never perform in public with a track i didnt purchase.
I can practice new songs without needing to waste a CD, i use WinAmp with the CDG plug-in and a PCTV converter

I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish the karaoke industry would have something like I-Tunes where i can buy one track at a reasonable cost ($5 per track is NOT reasonable) and burn to a CDG

knight show, the point i am making is there should be a service which you can pay for and download tracks instantly to burn to CDG, and the cost should be less than $5 a track.... say maybe $2 seeing as there is extra work with the graphics....... When i find a song i like, i like to sing it NOW, not wait for it to be burnt for me.... When I buy a bunch of tracks from I-Tunes, i have them immediately for me to burn to CD and transfer to the DJ computer

Have you guys ever made your own?

I have a licensed version of Karaoke Builder Studio, and yes, it makes authentic cdgs... with adjustable scrolling. You can insert graphics... the whole nine yards.

It costs a LOT of money for that program. It takes quite a while to sit there and code that, listening to it, making minute changes... getting it just right.

It also costs a LOT of money for each license for the individual songs(depending on the artists... some are outrageously expensive), not to mention studio bands, and the time it takes to do that.

THEN there's a profit margin to begin with.

I think the $5 a song is perfectly acceptable!

Nothing in this world is "Free". I especially wouldn't use something like that to make money off of. The only thing it can lead to is problems. As has been said above, some people dupe their originals to protect their investment. Anything else is wrong, especially when you're going to do it for a gain.

I was curious if everyone here has the same opinion of using a copied disc when one you want is out of print (and you can't find the out of print song) even going the used route?

I never use a copied disc I don't physically own.

I have a copy of the entire DK 1-99 library and the SC8148 and 8125. Basically, you can't find them anywhere...

so I can't use them in a professional show.

IMHO, if you own the original CD, you should be able to make an working copy of the CD....

Knight show, if you own the DK and SC cds and the originals are getting beatup, DUPE THEM. then put the originals in the filing cabinent and put a post-it on them, ARCHIVED DO NOT PLAY

You legally purchased the music, you bought one copy of the tracks and are using one copy of the tracks..... you don't buy the rights to the media, you buy the rights to the CONTENT.

That is why you see PHM offering mp3 updates for CAVS players (does anybody know the formats that the files are in, i know MP3, but is the graphics CDG or CAVS proprietary?)
