In our show, the singer from the audience will ALWAYS sing the song before either the KJ or the Shotgun. We are providing entertainment for these folks and HOSTING. If two people put in the same song within a short period of time (we do a 5 hr. show) ... our policy is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. We asked the second person to submit a second choice, and have never had any trouble with this. In some cases, if someone sings a song during the first hour and then another person requests that song in hour 4, we usually allow that. We don't ENCOURAGE singers to sing the same songs in the same show, but we will allow it if it is well spaced out.

I am fairly new as I have only been singing for about 5-6 weeks. No one ever said anything to me, but my personal policy is that the regular people I know sing certain songs every week and there is one song I would love to do, but will not do it out of curtesy to this guy. (I do know him from the bar)
Last week I told him that and if there is ever a night he doesn't show up I will do the song. I feel it is just a curtesy thing. There are so many songs that can be sung that why take a song that someone else does every week? I noticed most of these people only have a select few songs and they do them every week. I interchange certain select songs each week off my list and the other half of the songs are new ones I worked on over the previous week.
Just my two cents worth.

Yup- Neil Diamond. Straight out of the movie Saving Silverman. He even wears thos sparkling disco ball shirts. The problem- he sounds like a drownin cat, and insists on using the cordless so he can wander the bar singing to all the ladies.
Heaven FORBID anyone else sings Neil while he is there, because he will actually go up to the host and ask why they are letting someone do his song. He even tried yelling at my wife once, asking how she could let me put it up.
Please tell me my torture is not unique, and other people out there have people like this...
Please!!
Your torture is not unique! I try to avoid having the same song sung twice in one night, and I won't let the same song be sung within the same 2 hour time frame. Nobody wants to hear the same song done over and over and I won't encourage the competetive "I can sing that better".
Because singers will frequently pick up on any songs that I sing, if I open the show with a song, I will let someone else sing it later...but only after a couple of hours.
My regular singers have learned, if there is a song that they consider to be "theirs", they have to put it in early, because if someone requests it before they do, it's not their song that night.
One last thought....the people that really get me are the ones that look at my songbook, (6000 titles) and tell me that I don't have anything. Newsflash!! If there's nothing in there that you can sing....you probably can't sing!

I've had occasions where I've specifically sang somebody else's song before they could put it in. Not because I necessarily thought I could do better, but just to not have to hear them sing it yet again.
It amazes me that people can sing the same songs over and over and over again. To me, that would be excrutiatingly boring. There are people that I see who sing the same songs EVERY time that I see them. Sometimes it's fun to just shake em up a bit and make em branch out. Ive sang songs that turned out good that I thought would suuuuuuuuck, and vice versa. You never know until you give it a try!

This doesn't really bother me all that much. Usually what happens is I can't decide what to sing and then I hear a song being sung and I think to myself: "that's what I should have sung!!" But, in all honesty, there are times when somebody will sing one of "my songs" and I am listening intently to either praise or criticize the performance.

In another scenario to this thread....sometimes a singer gets "stuck" with a song...I have done songs in certain venues and each time I go back to that venue....the KJ or someone in the crowd will say...."oh do that "******" song that you did last week!!! I want my friend, "*****" to hear it!!!" and then pretty soon everyone expects you to do "that" song every week.....or each time you show up.... and of course you don't want to disappoint your "fans" .....but i guess lots of singers have this problem?

Hi, am new here
I once had this bad experence. Did a number by Air Supply, I think. and as usual did it badly. I won't mind if people boo me but of all thing the KJ sang the same song right after me. needless to say I never go back. I know I can't sing well but that's what Karaoke is all about...

Badsinger.. just don't tip the KJ.. That was very rude and unprofessional of him. Apparently the KJ doesn't like to keep his show or crowd?
BTW that is coming from a PROFESSIONAL KJ
Good or bad singers, They all deserve to be treated with respect. atleast they got up and sang. They have earned my respect.

I'd have ripped the microphone from his hands and spiked the sucker!
If he's going to break common decency morals, then I'm allowed to as well.
That WAS rude, and totally unnecessary!

As a listener, I prefer not to hear the same song twice in a night.
As a singer, I feel a little put out when someone "steals" my song that I had planned on.
As a KJ with 15,000 titles . . . give me a break! Find another song to sing!
No one owns a song. They need to break away from singing the same 3 or 4 each and every week. I rarely ever sing the same song in a month's time. Some as seldom as every 6 months.

A couple of things..
First...
About the crybabies on the site that complain that that songs are "THIERS"
Unless you have purchased "Mechanical Rights" to it.. PLEASE Don't complain about it.. I have several systems that have larger libraries than 15,000 titles, and ya know what.. I sing more songs than any karaoke singer I have had on my systems in a club show in the last 3 years.
I apologise for being harsh sir BUT...
LEARN SOME SONGS... YOU DON'T OWN THEM!!
The original artist's & thier producers do.
And for Mr.Badsinger I'm Very happy to hear there has been a resolution.
I hope you can have some fun at your favorite bar again...

[b] IRONICALLY...[/[b] Just as I was reading the posts on this forum again, I had CMT on and Country artist Sara Evans was being featured in a show called "Total Release" and I had taken about 10 mins to actually watch it. Well amazingly enough there was a scene I had as a "Karaoke Singer" and a song writer had always dreamed about. A world renound recording artist shows up in a karaoke show and rips the microphone out of a very poor singing genderbending male singer and stops the show. And tells him "I own that song".
To be honest the guy wasn't even close.. I felt bad for him NOT!
But ya know what, I bet he was embarrassed.
I give the guy credit just for trying..
I bash Ms. Sara Evans for taking a shot at the industry.
I'll send her a $20.00 bill for her effort. And a copy of this post.

I'd have ripped that song back out and said, "It's covered under reproduction rights... you SOLD that song... your your attorneys did!"

Being a newbie I don't kow the rules so just go with my insitints. As far as others singing songs or singing more than one time I let them do it all if it goes with the flow of the show that night. Last week I had a kid come up after someone sang a song and ask to also sing it. No problem, she did a good job and everyone cheered her wildly. I have also had singers ask to sing a song over immediatley. It was late and few people were around so I let him do it, he appreciated the parctice and is a regular. I will admit my show is in a unusual place where almost anyting goes, and that is in part what makes it fun and works well with the Karaoke spirt. To me, even at 50, rules are made to be broken.

How can someone steal something from you that you don't own!.....If a singer must have "their song"....learn a song that no one else sings...but if you do it real good....someone will try to do it to... it just works that way....
as for repeatin' songs....well if it's been a long enough time I suppose it would be alright...but back to back....not a good idea....
oh... but I've wanted to a few times...believe me!....but just the competitor in me.....and I would never really do it...unless maybe it was a bet....that happened once....three of us sang the same song back to back....lookin' at crowd response....but it was in fun...everyone knew that....that is why the KJ allowed it.... and no I didn't win....

We run on a strict first come, first served basis. The first singer to turn in a song gets it for that night. We try to avoid running the same song twice at the same show.
I ask the second singer to put in another song. If they don't have one, then I tell them I'll let them sing it, but they will have to wait at least one rotation so as to split the two performances up.
Generally speaking though, it's best to avoid repeating songs. Never know when you're going to run into a "THAT'S MY SONG!" kind of person.
