My favorites are "Red, Red Wine," recorded by UB40 (who got their name from the number on Great Britain's unemployment application), written by Neil Diamond; and "Red Rubber Ball," recorded by Cyrcle, written by Paul Simon. Cyrcle later turned down another song by Simon (idiots!) called "Feeling Groovy" (Okay, the something Street Bridge Song, but whatever).

How about "Without You"-Harry Nilsson, originally written and performed by Badfinger. "Mama Told Me Not To Come" - Three Dog Night, originally Randy Newman. "Smoke Two Joints" - Sublime, originally The Toyes.

The Atari's cover of "Boys of Summer"
Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday"
Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of "Higher Ground"
Stevie Ray Vaughn did a good cover of "Superstition" but I don't think I've seen a karaoke version of it.

I was actually gonna metion that Orgy cover of Blue Monday. Some people don't like covers but I do as long as they take it to a whole different place. Whitney's version was way different than Dolly's.
Actually, recently I got Shinedown's cover of Simple Man. Really nice.

I was gonna point that out and ya beat me too it.
What I really wanna know is what crowd actually *prefers* the Creedence version of it? <looks at Knight>

?? Why are you bringing ME into this? Y'er just trying to get me into another ARGUEMENT! ((snickers))
I do admit to a couple of covers I actually like.
"You Keep Me Hanging On" - Kim Wilde - originally by "The Supremes"
"Funkytown" - Pseudo Echo ... seems ever version of this I like! I love the newer takes on this one... to me, it just sounds better and better with each new version.
One of the greatest cover songs ever done was Garth Brooks "Shameless", originally done by Billy Joel - who sang it like a drunk bluesman. Even Billy J admits that Garth did a great job on it, and is happy with the results.

I'm gonna go with "Tina did good" from ya and I thought I might have a little fun prodding you today since you're online. Sorry to make you my entertainment for the minute

one that a guy who was helping me out was singing a lot was "mama don't dance". he had no clue it wasn't a poison song (K. loggins J.D. Messina). Another guy came in and wanted to do "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. I had no clue it wasnt't a Marilyn Manson song. then that brings up the obvious Manson cover "sweet dreams" I liked it as a Eurythmics song, But Manson gave it a whole different feeling. sadly it happens way too often that people do a cover and pretty much wreck it.
A friend of mines band was actually posted on Joni Mitchell's website for there cover of "big yellow Taxi" IMO much better than that of counting crows. actually if you go to her site there are hundreds of covers of just that song.

Holy cow I'm learning a lot from this thread. I had no idea Elvis did T-R-O-U-B-L-E. I had no idea Paul Simon wrote Red Rubber Ball. And I didn't know Three Dog Night wasn't first on Mama Told Me Not to Come. Another Three Dog Night hit, The Show Must Go On (yes I"ve karaokied it!) was originally a Leo Sayer Song which he took to #2 on the British charts (Leo Sayer of You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and When I Need You fame).
Bruce Springsteen wrote and covered Blinded by the Light and Spirits in the Night, but Manfred Mann's Earth Band are the versions I know best. Elton John did good covers of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Pinball Wizard. I wonder if Chicago covered any songs on their albums....not that I know of.
I believe Paul McCartney wrote the Peter and Gordon hit Please Lock Me Away. It definitely has a beatlesque feeling to it.
I like Grand Funk Railroad's cover of The Locomotion.
It's hard for me to imagine anyone but Linda Rondstadt singing Blue Bayou, yet it's a Roy Orbison song.
I prefer CCR's Proud Mary to Tina Turner's, which I think is overdone. Actually I'll amend that statement to say the last half of the song is overdone.

Was it really? DUH. Dolly wrote it and recorded it decades ago. WH rebirthed it and made the prodigious songwriter Dolly Parton a whole lot more $$$$. Dolly wrote it for Porter Wagoner when they split - I think Whitney was singing it Mr. Dances with Wolves.
Sorry for the sarcasm ... I would THINK a country song like that would require a LITTLE changing to make it fit into that movie (The Bodyguard, I believe it was.)

Actually Karen,
Your sarcasm is appreciated and preferred actually.
I actually picked that reference because in my mind, it is one of the most known "covers". And also I picked it because of the extreme exaggerated difference in the two versions.
Oh yeah, I too am extremely sarcastic, and just know that by your response, you have opened the door for my sarcastic commentary in the future!

And that's quite a job by SC covering the cover. I got it for a regular singer and I'll never forget the first night we ran it through the club system. It starts out like a normal track but about a half minute into it there's this drum break and then WHAM! It just about blew us both off the stage when the 18" subs kicked in.
And everyone else off their seats.
It's the best karaoke track I can think of if you want to show off your system. Wow!
My only exposure to Orgy before this was on a Family Values concert recording that was floating around the house a few years ago. I really didn't remember this cover.

I prefer Ronan Keating's version of 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'. I can't remember who did the original.

Be bewwwwwwy bewwwwwy careful about being sarcastic on this board... .... I'm afraid I let my sarcasm rise to the top often and have to write and rewrite posts because I just KNOW someone won't see through it and take me seriously. I'm happy to be responsible for someone else joining the Asserbic (oops, there I go again) Sarcastics Club...I have friends who refer to it as the ADHD for Adults Club...no patience for the dim bulbs (DOH! There I Go AGAIN!) (please don't correct spelling of acerbic for me, somebody - I did it intentionally!)

Club? If there were one, I'd probably be a charter member. In response to your patience, I'll try to make my bulb shine a bit brighter, but can't make any promises as all bulbs go dim eventually. And the spelling, no one here would ever bother to actually spend time correcting spelling on here! Noooooooooo.

BUT some times it can be nice when a band does cover an obscure song and does it well it can be a good thing such as Great white doing "twice shy". the song was first released in the late 60s or 70s, but I can't recall by who. basicly all that they changed was the production quality and vocal harmony. the same can be said for almost all of Metallica's Kill em all.
Ian Hunter originally did "twice shy"
