I am getting ready to do a transfer of all my cd's to my desktop when my compuhost software arrives this week.It only has an 80 gig hard drive and i'm afraid that's to small. I have been trying to read up on external versus internal.Seems there are alot of problems with the bigger externals and internals are faster than the usb's i've seen.
It's an older computer so it only has ide connectors.
Well for now,i have about 100 cd's to convert.Does anyone think a 500 gig hard drive would be adequate?

Get a 500 gig internal; the cost of a smaller capacity HDD is only a few cent cheaper.
I would not even bother to covert the audio file to mp3, I'll go for .wav file.

I agree with a larger internal, you don't even need to do anything with your current drive, leave it for the programs & store the music on the large one! tigerdirect.com has a 1.5 TB Seagate drive right now for like $100!
Ah just noticed IDE only, you may only be able to get UP to a TB. But even those aren't that much anymore. Simple to install as well.

Get a hard drive with 1/3 more than your music Put your Os on another partition or hard drive. If you do recording get 1-2 gig ram. Depending upon your Os I can advise you how to improve the efficiency.

Can you tag a wave file??? That's my only concern... I don't see a problem encoding at 320k with lame, no one will ever hear the difference and you can tag the files

I am thinking more of its archive use rather than direct playing the file. A 100 cd can be store in a 16 gig pendrive even at 360kb, and still have enough room for expansion.

I can't be sure if .wav can be tag; I just use proper file names and most program can search using file name.

I was at work when I posted last night. For now 100 cd's will fit fine on the 80gb. I have nearly 1000 discs that take up just under 100gb.

Yes it can, I just tagged a wave file using Itunes and it worked fine But I still think that compressed at 320k with the latest lame encoder and of course, MOST IMPORTANT, a good software to extract that doesn't affect the sound quality Having a wave file that was extracted with the wrong software is a mistake, a software with the Bass engine would be my first option
