Hello...

I'm new to this forum -- it's nice to be here . Now, I am a karaoke-hobbyist and have had a karaoke setup as part of my home theater system for years now. I had a songmachine "all in one" type deal for a while, and recently changed to the memorex set-top karaoke machine with the built in camera... Now, this is more than adequate for my usage -- however, when i sing close/loud into the mic, i hear distortion from the speakers (even when it's not loud). Now, i have a 600watt top of the line theater system, so i know the speakers are not physically distorting, so i figure that it's the karaoke machine, or the mic itself. Now, since i am using the mic that came with it -- is there a chance that the mic simply cannot handle the loud/close sounds? Would swapping mics make a difference? Once again everything is fine, except for when i make a loud "uuuuuhhhhh" noise, or something like that real close to the mic, my voice will distort in the speakers at any level. The music stays fine...

Also, with these home karaole players that i have had -- i notice that lot of the physical sounds of the cd loading up and spinning and such are somehow fed into the speakers and amplified through them... is there a way of fixing this?

The loading noises are due to your player. The only solution would be to upgrade to better quality player such as a JVC or RSQ. The distortion you hear in the speakers is not unusual with home theater systems. Most modern home theater speakers are not engineered to perform as a PA system. When doing karaoke that is, in essence, what you are asking your home theater to do. When singing, try not to use surround modes and stick with stereo. Also be wary of boosting the trebble too much to avoid blowing your tweeters.

If I were you, I would get the JVC player, and purchase an inexpensive quality microphone from a reputable brand (Audio Technica, Shure, Sennheiser, Samson,etc). Any dynamic mic from the established brands will blow away the cheap plastic toy mics that come with those all-in-one players.

Ideally, you may want to consider using a seperate set of speakers for singing that are designed to handle live voice and adding a mixer to have more control over your music/voice mix. However, based on your post you probably would rather not go that route.

You're having a problem microphone frequency response. It might be fixed with a quality microphone, but that will be like putting a $1000 stereo in a $250 car.

Spend a little money in a nice player and a mixer. A player with microphone inputs will not give you what you need.

Hello again...

Thanks for the responses... I have a lot of top-quality musical equipment in my house as a result of friends in bands... I will take one of the nice mics and give that a shot. I also have a small PA amp that i could use for vocals. The only problem is, the mic input would still be going through the player -- which takes me to having to buy a seperate unit for mic input...*sigh.. I love the wireless mic on the **memorex**.... I guess i'll be fine, as long as i dont blast the volume and go "uuuuuuuhhhh" real loud into the mic! However, i can turn the music up real loud and it never distorts... Maybe i can use the PA portion of my old songmachine as the PA portion and just use the new machine for the audio/video feed for the music -- as well as using the wireless mic now and again...

Any more suggs?
