Recently purchased a YAMAHA EMX512 powered speaker with the ONE KNOB COMPRESSION for the vocal channels.

How do I know when this is set correct? Assuming a don't have SCREAMERS as singers --what do I set it at ?????? ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED

On our EMX312, we keep the compressor set at about the #3 position to start. Experiment with it to see how much of the vocal you are trying to bring out and or keep feedback down. Most venues vary, but the #3 setting seems to work for us.

Mine doesn't have numbers, but I find mid-scale works great. I turn it up if I get a shouter, and to the max (plus cut down the fader) if I get a mic cupper.

I have the same mixer and I've never been able to figure the compression out. I've experimented with it at a variety of settings and it just doesn't seem to do much for me. It's really not something I use at this point. It may be a great feature, but I just don't see the benefit. I vary my voice and the distance of the mic from my lips to change the sound, but I doubt most Karaoke singers give this any thought.

I've been using the EMX512 Powered Mixer for the last year. I think it's a good piece of equipment for a good price.....BUT, Im my opinion the one knob compression is basically worthless. It does have a small compressive effect that is no where near as effective as a real compressor. A person with better sound finesse than myself may get it to be more usefull, but I really doubt it

That being said, I still think you made a good purchase as long as the one knob compression wasn't a big buying point for you.

I wish that yamaha had included inserts on at least a couple of channels

I would set it at mid scale as mckyj57 has suggested. I'm sure it helps somewhat, just not as much as I would like. But for such a light weight unit, with all it's features, and, a good price, you can't expect the world

Never using any type of compression this is what I see....WHen I increase the amount of compression the vocals seemed to get louder and more dominant in the mix. In playing with it at last weeks show TOO much compression didn't sound good . Is this (compression) one in the mix that should be adjusted for every song ??

No. The reason they get louder as you increase compression (up to a point) is
that this essentially allows you to turn up the GAIN on the channel, which it does. This corresponds to the OUTPUT knob on a real compressor, and it boosts the presence of softer passages.

You should be changing your fader much more than your compression. If the floor of your singer is higher, then lower your fader and vice versa. The compression will prevent the softer singer from blowing you away when they decide to belt.

so..The fader works in conjuction with the compression ?

Set the compression between 11 and 12 O'clock and control the majority of singers volume with the fader?

If I have a SCREAMER --increase the compression while lowering the fader?

That's exactly what I do.
