I have listened to at least one song on Singers Showcase that was an obvious original being held up as a karaoke rendition. The person who did the song was clearly the original artist. I have listened to another recording of the same song where the singer is almost indistinguishable from the original artist. ALMOST is the optimal word. There are subtle differences compared to the original. The song I am referring to have my comments and rating. :x

I will admit I could be wrong but I adamant that the song is an original recording. :?

I find it disturbing that someone would do such a thing. Many people take what is posted on Singers Showcase as being genuine. I will not be so sure in the future. I am very disappointed in the person who made the submission if my suspicions are true.

Terry E-mail me .. My pc is linked at my studio through the RTA. I should be able to show audio differences in audio frequencies.. tell me which song.. I'll listen to it first.

If I can't tell I'll test it. It could be vocal tuned too. :!:

They could have used one of 3 vocal tuners.. TC Electronics, Antares, Meladine.

I have yet to meet a perfect vocalist in this world.. NOBODY is perfectly in key and pitch vocally.  If they are that perfectly on key I want to meet them!

You are probably right that there would be at least the slightest difference in a voice to another's. No two people could possibly be totally identical, although......

There may be some so close that the average person cannot tell the difference with the natural untrained ear. Probably many well-trained musicians could.

Example: Last week I was at a show and this woman was singing and I swear I heard Chrissy Hynes (sp?) of the Pretenders. She wasn't singing a Pretender's song, but I asked her husband about this and he said she does do some Pretender's songs sometimes and they get that all the time. I mean she REALLY sounded just like her.

Just something to think about.

Brian and I are communicating about his technology to confirm that it can detect if the song in question is an original karaoke/live performance or an original artist recording. If I am wrong I will stand up in this forum and take my lumps. That is why I am not going to identify the song or the contributer. :argue:

My intention is not villiafy one individual but to raise a concern. There are people who can sing at a karaoke venue and sound almost exactly like the original artist. My counterpoint is that is you record that same person there will be subtle differences. The only way to eliminate such nuances is to have a professional sound engineer and studio to record the song. :grumble:

My conparision is to play the original CD and the recording off the website beside each other. That is why I blew the whistle on this person.

Well you've got my curiosity peaked ... it's not me is it?? Haha! Well, if this person is that good, I'd like to hear it ... and if it is a fake ... I don't see why it's that big of a deal ... people are bound do to childish things on the Internet .... it's not like there is a cash prize being given. But I am curious ... I did see a post by lilsis, a Martina McBride song 'Loves The Only House' ... which she later admitted was the original recording ... D'oh! Martina will be happy to know that she recieved glowing 10's across the board!

Although I think Phill gave her an 8 ..... J/K!

I am happy to say it is not you. And never was there a more wonderful singer... 8)

I just think it's unfair to all the people genuinely trying to be good singers. I am sure some people get discouraged when they hear someone sounding like the original. There are a number of people who are really good, genuinely good. They don't need to cheat. :swg:

Mind you there are some people on Singers Showcase who are really trying to be terrible. But that's life - right?

I will start posting some songs once I figure what software to use to capture off my Sony MD. You'd better be ready becasue with me you never knwo what you'll get. :P

Once I get some feedback from Brian I will let people know the recording I am referring to. Either to apologise to or to expose the party in question. I may still decide to only share with those who ask me by email.

Aww.. Thank you for the wonderful compliment Terryoke! :D

I know what you mean about people shouldn't need to cheat ... but being that this is the Internet, it is bound to happen, unfortuanately. I hope you got my PM I sent you yesterday ... I don't use the PM system much so I'm never sure if I did it right! :? I guess I should have emailed you instead ..... I can't wait to hear your recordings!

I have not heard from Brian yet but Lonman has sent me an email. It may seem I was wrong. What I might havc confused as an original was another recording that was a technically flawless perfromance. It seems the performance perhaps is a mixed up copy that was listed on the site previously by another performer.

I am going to hold on for the moment from saying I was wrong. The evidence seems to point that way. :?

But then again I could be right...

I will add more as the saga continues...

Ps I did get the PM, I still need to respond.

Folks.. there is several differences in one song that I sampled..

1) this singer WAS smoother than the original artist.

2) this singer was also 15% different in vocal pitch than the original key of the original song based on published sheet music. & the original CD although both songs finished nearly at the same time (:02 diff) (no suprize there)

3) In 3 or 4 notes in this peticular song I think this singer was as far off as 25-30% sharp in key. (almost as much as a third in harmony to the music). *all vocal ranges were BOTH measured on the Antares "Pro Producer" & the Antares "Auto Tune-DX" in "Graphing mode."
My Real Time Analyzers were inconclusive.

No matter how ya slice the recording, vocal tuning, Mixing & mastering was totally a professionally completed effort. I just hope the guy bought the license to it.

I believe this singer did this song. you may draw your own conclusions.

Well it appears as if I was wrong...

(munch, munch, munch...slaver - **gulp**)

That noise you hear in the backbround is me eating the last of my delicious bowl of CROW!

To all concerned I apologise for the error. To the singer that I inferred was cheating I also apologise. I will correct my comments under his song. I think I did raise a valid issue and I hope that it helps make us more aware for the future.

I am very interested in the software that you used to analyze the songs in question. Could you please let me know some more about it.

Oh, and by the way, the comment that was made about people trying to be the worst--- I am probably the guilty party (although I hope not). I just want to try things no one else is willing to attempt and at least give people a chance to hear something different.

I would suggest you contact Brian who posted above me last. He is the one with all the analytical gear. If you send him an email or a PM Brian is good about responding. :read:

<<**Buuurrrrppppppp**>> - Excuse me! That CROW's not too bad. :ggof:

Singing
It's all studio gear and vocal tuners that can plot a "Real Time" graph and tell you every note, bar and measure that was sung, played and what key and note it was played in.

the product is made by Antares Tech. most every label in the country has it.. and it's available for download for direct x and most any recording system. also it's available in the "rack version". I used both. and ran them through my USB sound card input/output to the PC to graph the onboard "DX" series version. and the analog rca outputs of the cards to the inputs of the rack version. both pieces once ya learn how to run them in real time can really make ya sound great. But may cause ya to miss intonation if they are run too tight. 8)

Denndogg..
don't worry about it..
I made my biggest booboo.. i had a decent sounding version on the first take.. but the comprressor killed me in thr mix.. and i forgot to mix in the plug-in Effects and other toys on ther final mix in a song that I FINALLY put in the showcase... I'm totally Embarassed!!!

It makes the song sound very horrable!!! The musicians and the backing singers from soundchoice did a great job though!

Cool Edit will tell you if a vocal track is the same as the original. You put the track's side by side on the multi track screen. Like finger prints ... no two voices are the same ... so the two tracks should look quite different. Another incident such as this popped up on another site yesterday, where the singer in question changed the pitch of the original recording and tried to pass it off as their own work ... and our quick on the uptake Jazzybaggz caught the (in THIS case guilty) culprit red handed within a few hours by using her Cool Edit. Of course that could not have worked in the situation HERE on K~Scene, since the songs can not be downloaded as mp3's from here.

BUSTED!!!
:P

For the life of me, I cannot understand why people would fake someone like that. What could they possibly get from doing that? Unless they were trying to enter it in some kind of contest or something, it makes no sense. Not only that, but it looks like some people just don't have any morals whatsoever. Amazing.

It makes no sense to me either Celtic  ... but then, half the things people do don't make sense to me! Perhaps just kid's having a joke ... the way (when I was a kid) we would make prank phone calls to people ..."Hello? Is your refrigerator running? ...Well ya better go and catch it!!!!"
