Hi,

just listened to a few recordings at the singers showcase. Many of them sound really great. How did you perform those recordings?

I was thinking about recording myself from the tapeout on the mixer. Copyright wise for posting on the Singers Showcase, can I use my SC discs?

i am lucky enough to have a digital mixer recorder and all the instruments i need....but sher is right cool edit pro is an easy attainable software (you didnt hear me suggest to pull it off a file share site) and once you have it it is real easy to master (although i dont use it cause i had level problems) if you have songs i dont see a problem with using them for a display of your talents...it is strictly for amusement, but also like sher said the topic could get ugly here real quick...sher is a good example of a novice mastering recording in a short period of time....she has gotten amazing with her skills and me and her have actually done an original over the net where i sent her the music and she put her wonderful vocals to it...i am gettin ready to shop it around...anyways just do it....im sure you will do fine with whatever you use mort

I will check out the software. The mic pre-amp in my sound card is not all that great, so I am considering connecting the sound card to the direct out from my mixer. Now I only need a CD player in my computer that can read CD+G.

I have had some problems getting my files to transfer i have 3 done in Cakewalk "Sonar 3 producer's edition" In my home's digital studio at 32/192..and compressed the daylights out of it.. but being I upload in AOHELL it's been giving me alot of problems.. so for now until i can get my ISP issues straight I will just vote.. sorry folks..

As a follow up to sheree's post.. I have asked Priddis for permission to do 3 from thier library for the showcase.. they have referred me to thier licensing department.. i'm hoping for a response soon.

I did some more attempts last night on converting some songs to usable size.. Cakewalk Pyro could'nt recognize any track that was compressed in a Mp3 format lower than it's original transferred format.. Meaning a 12.3 MB song couldn't be successfully compressed to 2.1 MB by changing the bitrates in encoding like I would do in mastering to a CD master. but for a Mp3, I have to do it more radically to meet the criteria for KS. So until I hear a Yea or Nay From Priddis. I'm gonna sit back and wait. In short a 5 minute song just won't make it. But a 3 minute one will. I'll wait for the 3 minute one.

I discussed this whole showcase thing with my artist management agency today AND.. thier take is "nobody should complain" as it has been put by Phill and Sheree and a few others have discussed by posting , Phone and e-mail.. "As long as we are not burning and selling or able to Download these songs and distrubute them to others out of this forum." being the intent is to "Showcase" and NOT to "sell" or recover any expenses on our (the performer's) part if any body (ie: any manufacturer does get anal about it. AS long is has been understood by all this like another karaoke show.. We the singers are doing this not for profit and for entertainment and amusement porposes only. My management agrees and sees it as such. and backs that view 100%.

I hope the Karaoke Media Folks see it that way too.. It would be sad it they didn't.

As far as software that can be used to create MP3 recordings I have a few that I have checked out.

Cool Edit Pro is now Adobe Audition and costs $299 - a little expensive but an excellent software program, as most things from Adobe are.

Karaoke MP3 Recorder 2.02 $29.95

Super Mp3 Recoder $29.95

Also a program that we have used to reduce files is AltoMP3 Maker -The downloaded file is a full function version but you can only rip and encode the first 12 CD tracks before registration. $19.95

To find any of these programs, search in Google or any search engine of your choice and you should find them.

I use Cakewalk's mp3 converter.. it works well.. but usually with only any "active x" based recording software.

Just not well with uploading on AOHell... I'm still working with Cakewalk on these issues.. I think I'm getting closer.. I'm really close to using Protools.. I have ordered the unit today and really stretched my credit limit doing it.. but it might be for the best...

I've been using Musicmatch Jukebox to do the recording,
With it you can set the size of the MP3.
Now if I could just get the mix right ...Wooo Hooo !!!
It sounds Great coming out of my system but the line in does
something very naughty to the sound...

Update,

I got Adobe Audition on E-bay for $150. Works very well. I hook my SM-58 to my mixer and then the direct out into the sound card. No noise, works very well. If only I could sing well...

I just bought the whole Sony Recording pc based recording package to augment my present recording package, the program "Sound Forge 7.0" is a 2 track program and records as a .wav files, it edits and uses plugins and effects just like any other platform. it's more for those who prefer to do it on the "first try". We did my Marketing DVD in Sony's Vegas 4.0 Software and Screenblast software.

So real soon I hopefully should have "something" up if i can slow down to record again. now that I have the tools to do the files right.

but you will still have to convert the .wav file to .mp3 format.
There are many programs available to accomplish this.
I like "All to Mp3 Converter".

I am limited to pretty much just doing a live recording on a compact system and hoping it works. I then convert the live recording into an mp.3 file and hope for the best. I don't really have any way to do any editing at this time.

Ok here's what I do... everything you need into the mixer... karaoke machine, mics, effects. I use an alesis quadraverb for reverb and an alesis midiverb lll for delay. go out of the mixer into your pc's soundcard. Interesting enough I use Roxio Easy CD and DVD creator 6.0 to record to. Within it they incorporate SOUND EDITOR which allows you to digitize all kinds of analog recordings. It records as a wave file .wav and then allows you to edit it if you wish. I haven't messed around too much with that part of it. Once you have your recording you go to File and choose SAVE AS. It will allow you to save as a number of different file types which of course includes MP3 .mp3 files. Right from the same window it allows you to compress the file as large or as small as you'd like. So......... I said all of that to say basically if you have a mixer and effects already the Roxio software is only like $60 to $65 A cheap and easy way to get half way decent recordings.

I forgot about Analog to Digital Recording 101: Especially compressing files.

Plug in Effects such as reverbs, delays, mixing, & equalization compressors & ESPECIALLY Vocal tuning have thier way of coming out of sync or even disappearing when compressing a high quality digital recording such as like mine that was tracked 24 bit or higher and 48,000 bps. and mastered at 32 bit and 96000 bps (Stereo). then copmressed for Mp3 at 16 bit and 44.100 bps MONO, which really shook the 6 tracks apart, and my co-engineer and I did some troubleshooting on it and may re-post the song at a later time.

I believe it's definately an example of what not to do..

My best advice now that I have learned it.. Record in MONO!!!
