You can't go wrong with either of those mics. They will be extremely durable, sound great, have low handling noise, and if you have a pro use your setup you will not have to be ashamed of anything, as they are used at the highest level.
I haven't read this entire thread but when I saw that you recommended the Sennheiser E835, I thought that was great advice. I had been using my Shure SM58 for a long time, but tried the Sennheiser out just for the heck of it because my sons' band uses them and have been sold since. I like them both but for my voice the Sennheiser sounds best.
Hey Debs, I bought myself the freeport cordless and my husband the E835 bout a year ago...had been using sm58s till then. The first thing I found was that the cordless was so freakin sensitive and clear that it used a quarter of the gain that my sm58 did and showed up every single error...yuk...but it certainly made me more aware of how I was singing and I stopped being so sloppy. Steve didnt like the E835 for quite a long time...but he never even picks up the sm58 now...I always have an sm58 on hand in case anything happens to the cordless freeport (not that it has)

Thanks for all the input and I probably going to get a Shure SM-58.
I have one more question, does the connector fit with my sound mixer? There are several listings on Ebay and it seems the connector on the cable is not compatible with the input jack on my sound mixer.
The connector looks different than the connector of all my other cheap microphones at home.
Are there any specification of the connector/micro cables I need to get in order for it to work with my sound mixer?

Several of Rat Shacks mics are made by Shure.

I think i have the same radio shack piece of crap you have, and i never use it anymore, total piece of crap. What i use and recommend highly is the Behringer XM8500, i will stack it against any Shure out there for durability and sound. You just won't have to give up your first born when you purchase them. Some people don't agree that that Behringer isn't as good as the Shure, but i put them head to head on the same system at the same time, and then switched them around to see if the settings on the sound board made any difference, and low and behold,,,the sounded exactly the same to me!!! And i have a really good ear for sound too. So, save yourself some hard earned money and buy the Behringer. I paid less that $20 each, including tax from a local shop. Not too dang shabby if i say so myself. Good Luck I like the Behringer too, and if it were not for handling noise, I would recommend them unreservedly. For a handheld mic, one you will own a lifetime, I still recommend the Sennheiser E835 or the Shure SM-58. You can try to save a few bucks, but in my opinion the microphone is the most important part of the signal chain. I like to save a few bucks like anyone else, but the main vocal mic is the last place to do it.
Agree with you get what you pay for. I've been using the same 3 SM58's since 1994 in a karaoke setting 7 nights a week, they all still sound as good as day 1. I just replace the mic screens every few months to keep them looking good. After multiple drops (again 15 years of this & still working perfectly), the screens get pretty battered looking.

The sm58a is a wireless mic with the transmitter built into the mic, the sm58-lc is
cable not included.www.shure.com will have this info.I purchased my sm58 more
than 10 years ago(band application) have never had a problem with it, but would
get the sm58s next time, it has the on/off switch.Reason for this is if there is any
feedback the quickest way stop it is turn the mic off.
Sorry, didn't intend to double up on jian.

I never have a wireless 58, that's why i don't know what that 'A' stand for.
I would prefer a mic without the switch; that is the part that get done first. And there are too many time a song need to be restart because the last singer switch off the mic.
But for home use and mic with a switchis a good option.

The Shure SM58A is their BETA SUPERCARDIOID dynamic vocal mic which is designed for "close proximity" use and also for "blocking out" surrounding noise or problematic exterior sound distractions, such as crowd noise, band equipment, etc., from being picked up and needlessly amplified through the system. They list for $160 at various music stores. (ZZounds, Musicians Friend ) Not something I'd personally use for home or giggin'.

Discusman,
I'm not trying to confuse you BUT, as you stated this/these mics are for your home, and as much as I respect a great number of the members who have posted their suggestions concerning brands, ( and costs )I thought you might be interested in knowing that on Ebay, right now, you can purchase a pack of three Shure PG48's, with the cords and free shipping for $79.00. ALSO, from the same seller, a pack of three PG58's, with the cables and free shipping included, for $129.00. I know, I know,...some will jump up and try to "bite me" for trying to convince you to save a few bucks, but in reality, you just don't need to be spending $100 for ONE mic for home use when the difference in that setting would be negligible, plus these mics ARE durable and "close" to the SM58, and as good, if not better, than other brands within the same price range. ( IMO ) So..just go to Ebay...type in "shure pg mic", and scroll down. The sellers name is "brianf" and he has a great feedback rating as well. Doesn't hurt to look. No harm.....no foul.

I looked at my mics they just say Shure SM-58. I have 2 of them I use with my home system. I have had them about 3 years and have always felt they were money well spent. Don't know what the LC or A stands for. I am sure someone will know and answer your question more fully. Mine came without cords so I got some 25' cords to give me plenty of flexability.

Quote: 1. I bought the PG-48 with a switch. I found that the only thing a switch did for me was make me have to restart songs all the time as people were handed switched-off microphones. Also, the PG48 had a fair amount of handling noise, and not great sound. I gave that mic away.
True, but my PG 48s were only $26.00 each and work good enough for home..

I don't get all this love for the PG series mics from Shure. I love the SM58, and Shure makes make some great mics. PG mics are not some of them.
The PG48 is the one they sold to Radio Shack -- which as I recall was the vendor of the crappy microphone that the OP was trying to avoid.
If you are trying to upgrade your microphone, suggest you do that and get a real pro mic that will do just that. Just because you are at home doesn't mean you have to put up with chintzy sound.

I agree with MCKY. I want my home system to sound great and it is only going to be as good as the weekest link. I had less expensive mics before I bought SM58s. My financial situtation was not great when I bought them ( one at a time). Like I said in the other post I considered it money well spent. They sound great and from what others say they should continue to sound great for many years to come.

I use both wired and wireless mic's the number one thing I have found out is that you must use good grade cables not the cheap ones. In the past I tried using cheep cables (mistake ) they went bad at the conectors after 2 singers. as for mic's I use shure beheringer and audio technica's just my 2 cents dave

I've gone through many cheap mics over the years.. The 48 series does have a bit of
"Hand Noise" but so far, they don't fail.. and @ $26, it's OK with me..
If I was doing the 5 night a week gig thing, I might upgrade..

Exactly what I'm saying jd. The "handling noise" on the 48/58's is negligible compared to other mics in the same price range. (as well as some more expensive ones) Plus, I really doubt those are the same mics that Shure "gave" to Radio Shack. I'd have to see some proof, a tanglble source, to believe THAT statement. All Discusman asked for, was a mic good enough for home use. Granted, if one can afford to pay $100, for each mic, (he did note that he might want a second for duets) by all means..buy it. BUT, some individuals do not read what was asked, and ALWAYS refer to (in most cases) what they use "professionally". Again, some individuals like to use what may be considered "professional equipment" for home use, as well as for their gigs. Evidently no "budget concern" in those instances. All I offered was a number of choices that would definitely appease his "budget", as well as equipment that WILL be reliable, sound good, not "chintzy" (yes mckyj57, it is possible, I know that from MY experience with them, but like you...that's MY opinion)
and durable as all h.e.l.l.
So Discusman, you've been given a TON of options, I just hope that the prior "agree to disagree" episode hasn't confused you anymore than you were when you initially posted. ( That happens here sometimes....not on purpose mind you..just human nature rearing its head) All the suggestions were actually very good, covering "bang for the buck", personal likes/dislikes, various brands including pros and cons from those who posted. Now... all you have to do is decide which way to go. Personally, I actually use the PG48/58's for my gig. ( plus a Shure SM58 wireless ) The reasons are what I've already posted. But, I only do one gig a week, and like jd said, IF..I was gigging more, I MIGHT..."upgrade"...but there's no need to, as, to put it simply, the sound is just fine. Good luck with your choice/s, whichever way you decide to go.

^^ Well said Donny^^
I see many gigs using the 58 series mic, and they are a bit better than the 48, but the 48 works just fine..
On a side note, when a drunk swings the 48 around on the cord, the price goes up to $100.00

Has anybody tried these mics?
For a backup or place where hard use exists, they might be alright. I'd sure like to try one..
