SW
You can take the following personally, or not. At this point I don't care!
Pray, tell, what is the accomplishment you find in your singing through a whole night. Furthermore, what accomplishment is there in being able to do so?
On the other hand, those who are familiar with me know the following about me:
1) I can sing all night if I had to, but I prefer not to and DON'T. I'd stop the show early if that's what it came down to!
2) I consider a night of karaoke at my show to be a failure if I have to carry the show with my singing, OR IF I HAVE TO SING IN EACH ROTATION. In fact, the ideal night for me is that I never have to sing. 50% of the time I do the first song, only because no one else is ready
3) I mix my show up with videos, magic, one-liners, sing alongs and line dances (with lessons, if necessary) to keep the energy up and high. This is particularly important if there is a scarcity of singers!
You, SW, continue to do whatever gratifies you. Stop telling me that the things that gratify you are going to gratify me. I would never go to your show and you surely wouldn't come to mine. So, leave it at that!!!
And, since no one knows where you are, no one can gauge what is expected in your area. I know what works by me

ERIC- it cracks me up that you've heard them sing "preez re-rease me ret-uh-me go"!! (by yatsomira humperdink of course!)
Also i agree with you- why continually sing if you're slow for whatever reasons- weather including?? sounds a bit selfish to me.
I don't care HOW GOOD A SINGER SOMEONE IS (or thinks they are) MOST people WILL get sick of hearing you AFTER more than 3 songs IN A ROW, despite changing genres. If you get people to help, including staff if necessary, it gives your show a "Crowd-Participation-Mentality" versus the look and listen to ONLY ME-ME-ME.
-don't get me wrong, I LOVE to sing! It's just the show isn't about ME- it 's about THEM and getting THEM to sing and eat and drink. If they're IGNORED they tend to leave! - some people do enjoy just listening, but at a karaoke place....NOT MANY.
BILL- Yes sir, i have 2 different version of "Sukiyaki"- one's in japanese, but both are just scrolling lyrics-cdg- no vids. Have a great saturday by the way! I'm off as well thankfully.
SW- Yes i send my large groups of japanese customers down the street to sing- AFTER they've eaten at my restaurant. I have plenty of ENGLISH-SINGING/SPEAKING singers left so don't worry... I learned years ago to remove from my main books the african, spanish, french, italian, and portugese songs because a group will ruin it for my regular english-singing patrons.
I DO however list them in my MASTER BOOK and when someone asks, i have them look and sign-up ON THE SPOT and NOT take the book to their table where they would sign up 20 songs! I DON'T offer any japanese songs other than "Sukiyaki", and as i mentioned but some of them will stay and ROCK a lot of american songs- not knowing what they're singing.
MY current shows fortunately NEVER get pre-empted by sporting events, but I HAVE worked in venues where i was shut-down because of a sports highlight. (Hey- the owner is the boss!)- I STILL GOT PAID For being there- part of contract. MORE than a few times in years past i "got paid" to watch football games AND was comped food (part of contract also always).
SW...OF COURSE YOU WOULD "be too busy entertaining the crowd" if Y-O-U ARE SINGING ALL THE TIME, but It would be MORE entertaining for YOUR PAYING CUSTOMERS if you INCLUDED THEM in part of the entertainment! THAT'S what you are paid for!!!!   HELLO? MCFLY????? ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) :drunk:

Since it's a karaoke night the participants would have to be willing to sing "karaoke." If there is nobody that wants to sing, i am talented enough to take command of the show because i'm the paid entertainment. And being such my job would be to entertain the crowd so they stay and spend money. Karaoke means ..someone singing. Why should it matter if that someone is a paying customer or a paid entertainer? The bar has to make money from people being there. That's why they pay me to build and entertain the crowd. They make money from it.
Everyone that goes to a concert and shells out $150 for tickets gets bored and leaves after 3 songs???? Wow. :O Same entertainer for how many songs? Elvis left the building after his 3rd song EVERY show because they were throwing tomatoes at him from boredom???? They come with the higher priced seats.
3 song concerts? 3 song operas? MTV/VH1 plays 3 songs and goes off the air? 3 song musicals? 3 song Broadway shows? Oh JR you did it again.. What a way to increase sales. Turn over the crowd every 3 songs Brilliant.
Stop comparing my talent level with yours, because there is a big difference in the quality of our entainment abilities. A failure to me would be shut down the show because i have nobody at all in the bar. If they are sitting there they will be listening to an experienced entertainer. Like it or not. They can leave if they feel i'm not their cup of tea.
You can be replaced by a jukebox on "slow" nights. They play the same dance CDs. Cheaper too. I'm a "live" entertainer if that's what the situation calls for.
I am not the show on karaoke night. It's not about me. Unless there are no other singers. Lets see..listen to crickets or i sing to entertain and help the bar make money. ![hug ](./images/smilies/emot-hug.gif)

SW, Let's see......
Karaoke means "empty orchestra"-NOT sidewinder HOGGING the microphone seeking Glory because he thinks he's a live entertainer!
The people didn't PAY $150 to come see YOU and hear YOU sing. sorry. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) Chances are THEY ARE THERE to eat, drink, SING, and be merry.... and i'll bet THEY would WANT TO SING GIVEN the opportunity and encouragement to do so from a real kj. A little encouragement goes a long way. YOU should try it. Then they'll be MORE interested in staying an spending more.
I AGREE there's a HUGE difference in MY TALENT versus YOURS. (i'd bet my 401k on it!)
You obviously don't have back-up as an entertainer other than Hogging The Mic! ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) YOU won't play upbeat music to keep your customers from falling asleep. ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) YOU don't dance and probably can't teach dance like i do. ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) YOU can't tell jokes or create interesting banter ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) .....or EVEN do magic tricks silly rabbit!
JUST HOW ENTERTAINING ARE YOU????? Name your talents if u possess any Mr. Saturday Night
ALL You can do is SING......you're a regular karaoke robot. NOT AN ENTERTAINER ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) . look in your dictionary and LEARN what the definition of an entertainer is (please) THEN come back and we'll have a "sit down revelation" with you.
AND i thought you've said in the last 20 threads and posts that YOUR SHOW IS NEVER SLOW?? Why the reference to crickets? Gotcha. ![yes ](./images/smilies/emot-nod.gif)

Ever see Frank Sinatra doing magic tricks to entertain his crowds? A singer is All he was. Although his comedy album surpassed Richard Pryors and yours.
Elvis jiggled and wiggled because he couldn't think of another song in between jokes.
The crickets are coming over from my competitions dance/karaoke show. :asleep: All they do is breed all night long. They need to be entertained once in a while so i invite them over for real karaoke.
Karaoke means "empty orchestra"-NOT "empty bar." I get my pay from them to get me to stop singing.
I've blown more money than your 401K. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)

I've seen Sinatra doing his "old black magic" routine!
He actually danced and intimidated the crowd also like i do at my shows! What a great talent he was- i'm just a Frank impersonator.... to be frank.
Elvis jiggled cuz his jumpsuits rode up his scrotum. common knowledge.
Breeding is fun and high-energy. I get HOT Swedish Blondes grinding on the dance floor and i get paid for it! Makes karaoke kinda boring after that!
Not having being married- i still have my 401k.........so far. Going to Vegas in a few weeks to blow some of it.

Just remember that she is intitled to a percentage of your 401K pension based on the lenght of your marraige and it's non negotiable. And she gets it up front.... ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif) not after you retire. Will you marry me? ![hug ](./images/smilies/emot-hug.gif)

Not intending to interrupt the bickering, but here's another reply to the OP's question
I've seen good success with the LONG songs like American Pie (8 minutes?) where the singer kept control of the (cordless) mic and walked around the room, eye-ball the next person to give them a heads-up, and then walking over there and holding the mic for them to sing (interview style) the next few phrases
Not sure if a KJ could get away with doing that (playing favorites) but it worked well for the Regular

Randy you party-pooper! interrupting our fun bickering. just kidding.
We do What You Mentioned with all of our sing alongs even if all 5 mics are out. I keep one and continue to circulate the room looking for a lip-syncer and try to get them involved in at least the refrain. It embarasses SOME and they do shy away, but MOST decide "what the heck i'm on vacation in hawaii" and get involved.
They're usually the ones that sign up shortly thereafter, and, after a few drinks their friends follow suit. So they end up staying and drinking and more and that makes my, and the bars, bottom line much bigger than if i didn't coax them into singing. J.R.

I had to give a LOL to this!!!
SW, Let's see......
Karaoke means "empty orchestra"-NOT sidewinder HOGGING the microphone seeking Glory because he thinks he's a live entertainer!
I can't ever see myself singing more than one song at a time, EVER. I admit I have done a song, then helped on a 2nd one...but that's about it! Uggggh, that doesn't even appeal to me...I can't believe it would to the rest of the people in the bar. If it came to the point I didn't have that many singers, I would play a 'good' selection of music, which I can do allllll night long if I had too! Yes it is BETTER than a jukebox, I have yet to find a juke box that has my sound or my song selection. One show I was at last week, the host sang 4 slow old country songs in a row.....ouch! I can't/shouldn't/won't ever, ever, ever...do that, but if it works for you.....enjoy ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif) MrD

I would more than likely leave a show if I was watching the host singing every song because he felt he needed to. Just another way to stroke their own ego, nobodies singing, they will watch me be the entertainer tonight.
Be a REAL host & get in the audience & work them into wanting to sing instead of watching a lame host play wannabe lounge lizard.

And while i'm out there magically working the crowd...what is going to be happening as far as music? I don't play dance music and filler crap. So do we sit and listen to crickets while i beg and plead for someone to be drunk enough to get up and "entertain"us???? Should i wait until there are 6 singers before i start? Do i watch everyone leave from boredom?
Karaoke means someone singing. So i am showing the crowd how to do it while i keep them there and entertained until we have people that are ready to sing.
I don't do boring songs while i'm trying to get the crowd going. That's the difference between my successful karaoke shows and some of my competition that thinks they are going to "WOW" the crowd with their exceptional singing talent. I know what to sing to keep the crowd lively and it ain't trying to show them how good i can sing lullubies. The difference between a true entertainer and a bozo that thinks they are a KJ. Then they wonder why everyone leaves or doesn't come to their show. It's not about your talent level. It's how enteratining you are. Country songs won't do it. Love songs won't do it. Ballads won't do it. Hip hop and rap won't do it. Contrary to most i am actually very entertaining because i can sing a wide variety and sing them well.

If i go to karaoke somewhere and they are doing anything else besides karaoke i'm out of there. I don't care if they have topless waitresses. I came for karaoke and that's what i want. And i won't be participating.
Many listeners may get a great deal of joy from not having karaoke sung all night. But it could be because they don't like it and the less the better. Why would you want to cater to listeners that don't like karaoke. They could be coming to destroy the karaoke night. Chase away the karaoke singers and what's left??? Not karaoke. If they know you play dance music and take requests, they could very well want to chase away the singers. Then they get to hear more dance music. Request songs that most of the crowd won't like such as rap and hip hop throw in some good swearing songs and the singers start to fade away....I wouldn't even stop long enough to buy my first drink.

Well we play a line dance song or 2 pretty much every weekend. This is requested by both the non-singers AND the singers - sometimes MORE by the singers believe it or not.
Guess you'd stay away from my show. Too bad!

A naive KJ could be unkowingly manipulated by a group of dedicated karaoke killers.
You want to please the crowd so you accommodate them, in your own destruction.
The word must be out that i don't play anything but karaoke because it's a very rare night that i get asked to play a dance song. Less than once a month.
If a group of karaoke singers wanted to get rid of a "mixed KJ" it would be very easy. Just keep complaining to the bar owner, "We can't sing enough and we're out of here." And the same thing could happen with a group of listeners, but their argument holds a little less water. Not much to complain about on a "karaoke" night. "Hey bar owner, the singers are singing songs." "What's up with that?" ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif)

Well I doubt you could get rid of a 'karaoke' kj that listens to the majority. If they want a line dance here & there & they are given it, there is no problem. I know for a fact our bar is in complete trust f the way I run my show - even if it includes an occasional line dance that is requested by the regulars & PACKS the dance floor - they aren't going to look at that as a bad thing!

Uhm, let's see
Lonman, joined Dec 10, 2001, vastly experienced, vastly knowledgeable in all aspects of the business.
TOTAL POSTS 5945 That works out to 78 posts per month
Sidewinder, appears Dec 2007, with the same opinions as a known "persona nongrata" on this forum; with the same opinions and demeanor that got a large canine thrown off of the DJChat forum, as well!
TOTAL POSTS 1022, that works out to 255 posts per month
NOTE:
Maybe the moniker of this new person has nothing to do with reptiles? Maybe it has to do with a Big Canine intending to become a Big Wind on the side, but found once again that he/she couldn't keep to the side and became a big wind in public?

BYE...With your attitude gone we will pick up 5 more enthusiastic party goers.
Notice I didnt even post in the audience participation thread. (whoops i guess this is the audience part thtread) We have more listeners up to the station than singers. I constantly get compliments from strangers about the quality of our shows. Our venue is known for partying and have a table reserved weekly for a birthday or other parties. Singers or not they get recognized and get their day in the sun. We need security because our crowd gets wound up tight. One who works clubs in Denver just shakes his head when I asked him How does this compare to Denver "Nothin' like this" During a lull Greg or I can sing and pick up the energy. Or we have singers that can do it also.
You would love our crowd to play for or sing to. When you sing there are smiles from one wall to the other and thumbsup from some. I have been to many shows and I or my host have never seen anything like it. I can honestly say it is the best show I have ever hosted or sang in. It is the culmination of many years experience and tweaking between 2 top karaoke hosts.
I tire of these arguments and threads I come up with this conclusion. I am not a KJ I am a host and one of the best and have the best one hired.
In this shutdown period I am going nuts We do have a gig this wed for a party . It is a gig we have bidded for $200 to start. He is currently expanding to a seating cap of 600. First gig with all 4 JBL Eons. (inside).
I guess in regular karaoke bars this
is totally out of the question. Get with it for gods sake.

I hate to admit it, but I'm with Sidewhiner on this one... I too go for the karaoke. I've been to clubs where they'll do a line dance, or a popular one... and the novelty is really worn off when there's only two people participating in it!
Just shaddup and play the next karaoke song, dammit! ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) !

PS Although the owner and mngr give us full rein and let in when we demand, they still are the boss.. But the biggest boss are the customers we constantly take suggestions. It is a team effort and ours is a constant change. We dont force a rigid format on anybody we supply the entertainment for the demand.
